We just reached the summit of the volcano. It was a long fly, and climb, and the air thinned quickly but when we could smell the sulfur in the air our lungs were refreshed. Some dragons immediately dropped their things and jumped in the lava to warm up and restore their energy. Fireheart was talking to some of the elders. I saw him help them down to the lava one by one. He had bags under his eyes and looked exhausted. I could see the beach from the summit but didn’t see any of the water dragons. I think it was too far for us to see them. I doubt even the Lightning dragons would be able to see them from up here. I jumped into the crater and hovered above the lava. I was stretching my claw down to touch it when Torch, one of the old kingdom dragons that we freed, used his wings to splash me with lava. I dropped down into it and splashed Torch back. He grinned at me and dove under me and came up again, I was holding onto his neck.
“How are you feeling?” He said. I climbed up his neck and laid my head on his flat snout.
“Tired, that's what I feel.” Smoke rose from my nose. “I just want to start building already so we have somewhere to sleep.”
“We all do. But first we have to rest.”
“You know so much about resting, don’t you, you lazy lizard.” I said. I climbed on his snout and dove into the lava.
“I do actually and I'm not lazy. I’m getting energy by resting.” He said smiling.
“Uh huh. Can you tell what it was like being a Kingdom Dragon again. Please?” I pleaded circling him. He sighed, he told me already so many times but I like hearing the stories and what it was like.
“It was ok at times, when they would bring me fish and deer and pond-fulls of water. The armor they made me wear was uncomfortable as well. Training also was not fun.” He turned on his back floating. “When we actually attacked though, it was exhausting, constantly breathing fire with a human on your back commanding you what to do. That was the most annoying part.” Just then Fireheart flew above everyone.
“Alright guys let's get to work with setting up camp.” He said while flying back up out of the crater. When we all reached the top Fireheart started talking again.
“I have made a decision with the elders, we will use the lava rocks to build bridges, our dens, and a platform in the center of it all. We have it drawn out already, if anyone wants to see them or make suggestions they can.” He said looking around. Some dragons went to see the plans and parted off with one of the elders. They came back shortly.
“Alright everyone, gather lava rocks and put them in a pile, we’ll make the dens first on the ledge of the crater.” Fireheart pointed to the edge of the summit that was in fact a ledge before it dropped off into the volcano. Everyone started to fly around and gather big rocks, small rocks, rocks of all sizes. We started to build the Elder den first and used the lava to hold the rocks as it cooled. We built the Medic den and then the Defenders’ den, then we built the rest of the dens. By the time night fell we had some of the bridges built. Everyone went to their dens but I stayed out to watch the moon rise. The cold air was brushing against my back but the heat from the lava was pushing onto my face and chest. I guess the combination caused me to fall asleep because everything went black as I laid down on the rough grains of tiny lava rocks.
