After Pride left the demon in the alleyway and went home she began to put her plan into motion. Wrath would never help Pride move a table let alone save humanity. The book given to her by the angels said that Wrath had been disappearing for long stretches of time for months now. Something happened after Pride was captured and that thing caused Wrath to leave Hell on multiple occasions. The only other place she could go to was Earth. Pride knew that Wrath hated the mortal realm. If she finished or helped Wrath with whatever he task was. Wrath could give her the information she needed and run back down into Hell. As Pride went over her plan in her head she stared out of the window in her abode. She must have been there waiting for at least 5 hours, she wasn’t counting. All she needed was the package she had ordered and everything would be ready.
There was no way Wrath would tell Pride her task willingly. Pride decided she would have to follow Wrath to wherever she was going. In preparation, she had decided to order a small hidden tracker. Since Wrath couldn’t just leave a body and get a new one there was no way she could leave it behind. Unless she found out about it, however, which Pride was certain she wouldn’t. Afterall Wrath wasn’t the most observant demon.
Eventually, it came and Pride prepared herself. She didn’t know when Wrath would come so she always had to be prepared. It’s not like she slept so she could just wait. She had bought shirts with long sleeves so she could hide the small tracking sticker on her arm and transfer it to Wrath when ready. Pride only gave Wrath the address she was staying at. All she could do was sit and hope that Wrath would come.
Eventually, she did. Pride gently strummed her fingers along the old rickety chair she had positioned in front of the window. Out of nowhere, she began to hear a mad crackling behind her.
“I was hoping that you weren’t lying in the letter! But this, this is too good!” Wrath held her stomach and she laughed. After a few seconds, it would dissipate then she would glance back up at Pride only to enter another fit of hysteria. “The great, Pride. The demon who answers only to Lucifer. Reduced to… Reduced to living in a broken down human home. Oh, this, this is it. This is what finally kills me.” She brought her hand up to her face brushing past one of her black locks and wiping a tear from her eye.
“How did you know I lived here?"
“Just told me,” She said in between laughing fits.
Well, if you’re done yet I would like to tell you about why I-”
“Wait, wait, give me another…” She chuckled. “Thirty seconds I just want to bask in your misery for just a bit more.”
“Fine!” Pride huffed an angry blush dusting her cheeks.
Wrath turned on her heels and flopped down onto Pride’s couch. Instead of putting her legs flatly on the ground she brought her feet in her dark leather boots onto the sofa. She crossed her arms above her knee and leaned forward. “So what’s up? Your letter wasn’t the most specific shit in the world.”
“I thought it was obvious.”
“You wrote the address and ‘You better be here as soon as possible.' Really did you need all that I'm sure you could have cut down on a few more words. ” She took the letter out of her suit jacket and tossed it on the table.
“And yet you took awhile.” Pride sighed pinching her nose. The amount of time I had to waste waiting for this idiot.
“You act like I do nothing.”
“You watch people get tortured as your job. You can afford to step away for an hour.”
“It’s not my fault that some get their dream careers.” Wrath shrugged.
“You think you're funny, don't you. Stop getting me off topic and come here.” Wrath groaned and stomped over.
"I happened to think I'm fuckin' hysterical!" She huffed.
“I have a task I need you to do for me.” Pride stood up and walked to meet Wrath clapping her on the back. I got the sticker on now. She smirked. Now to set everything in motion. She walked past Wrath and pulled the book out from a drawer she hid it in. “I am doing some… forced extracurricular activities I need your help on.”
“Going to need more than that.” Wrath walked behind Pride. She leaned up on her toes to better see the book. “Wait, that’s angel-script. What are you doing with a book written by angels?"
"They gave me a job."
"What? The holier than thou angels gave a demon a job." Wrath's face scrunched and searched Pride's eyes for any sign of deception.
“Yes, and I need you to give me the horseman’s contact information.”
“Why in the hell would I do that?”
“I’m your boss.”
Wrath smiled ear to ear lifting her hands up and yanked Pride to eye level. “Not anymore you're not. As soon as Lucifer finds out, guess who’s going to become enemy number one. Not the big guy upstairs, you. And I, for one, can’t wait to watch you burn for all the shit you’ve put me throu-” Wrath was interrupted by a soft bing in the room.
“Do you have a phone?” Pride removed herself from Wrath’s hands and stepped back. Wrath flushed.
“No fuck you.” She does. “I have to leave, see-ya bitch. Can’t say it’s been fun.” Wrath waved and disappeared.
“You’re wrong, it’s been a pleasure.” Pride took out her phone and saw the small blip that was apparently Wrath appear in a city about an hour away. “No, it’s been an absolute delight.” She smirked.
I could have just teleported myself here. Pride thought as she walked the streets of the city on her way to Wrath's location. She stretched her new male body as she walked. I don't want to waste energy that I can't regain easily. Between teleportation and possession, most of the time possession consumed less energy. Wrath will recognize me so no reason to keep using that husk the angels so kindly provided. I’ll just return to it when this is over.
I hate walking. She thought as she took another step. It is so inefficient. She grumbled as she began to approach the building.
It towered over the sky. Blocking out any star if… there are no stars. For the first time in her nearly month of being in the mortal realm, she looked. Had it been a month, or was it longer. She couldn’t remember. She shakes her head and looks around in the sky. There should be stars, why aren’t there any stars? The sky was dark and the moon shone in the sky. Yet there weren’t stars, where did they go? In a sudden flash, she remembered her purpose. She didn’t come to marvel or gaze at the Earth. She didn’t come to see how the humans behaved in what they didn’t know would be their species last years alive. No, she came- no that wasn’t the right word. She was forced to prevent it. Nothing else matters right now. Nothing else ever mattered.
There was a building and inside her target. That was all there was.
Her tracker only showed the building itself. She entered seeing a man at a desk.
"Hello, I am looking for a woman, sorry girl. About this tall," She motioned about where Wrath's small body would be compared to hers. "Angry, almost always swearing."
The man smiled. "Oh, yes Irene! Sweet girl helps out miss Rose in room number 87 on the third floor. Would you like me to show you up?"
"Yes, that would be wonderful." Pride stretched her or rather his muscles to smile.
She stood behind the man as the elevator began its ascent with a soft chime she reached the floor. “Oh, I probably should have asked earlier what business you have with her? Are you her father” How old is this body? Pride pressed her hand on his neck.
“In a way, I guess you could say that.” The man slumped down the wall landing on the floor of the elevator with a soft thump. Wrath removed her hand from his neck. She leaned over and tapped his head. Can’t have you remembering me... and can’t have anyone seeing you. The body disappeared. “Sorry, can’t risk an interruption. I’ll unhide you, once I’m done.” Did I just say sorry and to a human? Pride shook her head and slapped her body’s face.
Pride approached the 87th room. She brought her hand up to knock. What the fuck am I doing? She lightly rapped on the door, then more forcefully.
“Who is it?” A muffled female voice said on the other side of the door. Pride had never heard this voice before. What reason would Wrath have to be with an alive human? Wrath wouldn’t even let a dead one within ten feet of her.
“I’m Wrath’s friend.” Pride tried her best to sound nice.
“No, you’re not!” Wrath’s loud voice was barely hindered by the door. “Rose don’t you dare open the fucking door!” Pride could hear the doorknob turn. “No, Don’t do that! Rose stop!” Pride’s eyes met Wrath’s. Pride’s mouth turned into a smirk.
“Hey, friend! You didn’t tell me where you were going. I just couldn’t let something happen to you.” Pride watched with delight as Wrath’s face lit up with rage.
“Why did you let her in?” Pride walked through the doorway and closed the door behind her.
“He obviously knows you’re a demon. I figured that a demon could easily let themselves in. I’m not paying for property damage or medical bills. I have money but not that much.” The human said. Pride observed her. She seemed to be named Rose based on Wrath’s words. Wrath isn’t smart enough to use a fake name for it. She was a few inches taller than Wrath but that was a feat easily achievable by a human with aging. Her hair was brown with a medium length. Eyes equally as brown. Oddly enough she wore white cloth gloves. Do humans usually wear those? Pride didn’t care.
Pride slipped her hand into her pocket. She motioned on the phone from memory and brought up the camera application. Before getting here she connected this new phone to hers. She would just reset it after she was done. While Wrath was arguing with the human she took a picture. Once she got a few she turned on video. Pride’s eyes were suddenly drawn to Wrath’s attire. Was that an apron?
For the first time in centuries, she couldn’t contain herself. For the first time in what felt forever she laughed. Wrath’s eyes, in shock, turned to Pride then upon Pride’s hand. “What are you holding?” Pride put her phone back into her pocket. “What the fuck were you holding?”
“You… You’re wearing-” Pride held her side and her keeled over laughing. “What are you doing Wrath?”
Wrath’s face flushed suddenly with anger and embarrassment. “It- It’s none of your business.”
“Oh, it is I may be stuck here but I’m still your boss.”
“Like fuck you are. It’s only a formality. Give me that phone!” Pride saw Wrath begin to move towards her. She ended the video and handed Wrath the phone. She then began to watch Wrath stomp the phone into tiny pieces. Wrath turned her face back to Pride’s with a triumphant look. The human stepped back looking confused.
“Hey, Wrath you want to know about this nifty invention the humans came up with in the last however many years.” Pride’s face twisted into a cruel smile. Wrath crossed her arms staring up at Pride still thinking she was at an advantage. “It’s this little thing called the cloud.” Pride watched the humans face on the verge of laughter as she realized what was going on. Wrath’s face was still smug. Still as clueless as ever. You used to live with these creatures at least try to learn new information. “It stores any videos or pictures you take so no matter what happens to the device they aren’t lost.” Pride watched Wrath’s face deliciously begin to fall. No matter how many centuries pass the delight of watching someone who was built up so high in their mind realize they are screwed is never less sweet. Some days it was a better ecstasy than torturing the souls of the damned. That feeling was ecstasy, wasn’t it? Pride couldn’t remember what it felt like. She didn’t remember feelings.
Wrath’s face twitched. “So what you got a picture of me and some human. What are you going to do from Earth? You can’t exactly spread them around-” Pride interrupted Wrath.
“Oh, but I can. It was easy enough to find a demon to get word to you. All I need to do is find one and have it spread it around. Imagine what the other sins, no everyone in Hell might think. Imagine how many centuries it’ll take for Lust to stop bothering you about this!” We don’t exactly have centuries but it’s not like she knows.
Fresh horror covered Wrath’s face at her realization. Pride inwardly smirked. She hadn’t needed to manipulate Wrath for a while. Sometimes she forgot how easy it was. Pride began. “So let me tell you what is going to happen to keep these photos just with me. You can still do whatever you do with this human. I couldn’t even find a shit to give. However, until I finish the job the angels gave me, you are going to help me. You will not ask any questions or tell another demon. I will send you a text and you will do whatever I need you to do. Once I’m done the photos will be deleted.”
“How do I know you won’t spread them around behind my back while I do the work?” Pride could see Wrath’s brain working.
“You don’t. We’re demons. Sorry, I’m a demon, you’re a little half breed,” Wrath’s face was flushed in anger. “I won’t do that because if you don’t cross me I don’t want to waste any of my precious time on you. I won’t ask any questions about whatever you got going here if you don’t ask any questions about my job. Deal?” Pride stuck her hand out.
She watched Wrath stare at it before moving her hand into Pride’s. They shook hands and Pride yanked Wrath close to her. She bent down and whispered into her ear. “I better not hear of any other demons knowing about this, got it.”
Wrath pushed back taking her hand and wiping it against the apron. “Fine,” Wrath pivoted and walked over to a notepad scribbling down numbers. “Here is my phone number just get the fuck outta here.”
Pride hastily walked out the door and began her walk home after getting to the first floor. She remembered the human she had left knocked out and glamored. She hastily flicked her fingers causing the glamour to cease. He wouldn’t remember her and he would probably be found soon. Not like Pride cared of course.
She began to motion for a cab. Checking the date on her phone. I’ve already wasted two months on this. Not like that’s much time anyway. I’ve spent a lot more time on a lot less. She scoffed. I can’t believe I’m putting effort into this shit. I should just let it all burn… and me with it. The cab pulled up and she got in. “Take me to the nearest police station.” Don't know where to take this. Might as well give him a head start.
She left the body behind.
