Chirp Chirp Chirp. The irritating cacophony of the birds jerked Marco out of his dreams.
“Damn birds,” he muttered, yawning. Rubbing his eyes, he rolled out of bed to prepare for the morning. Trudging towards the bathroom, he opened the door with a loud creak, and, as he entered, was welcomed with a high pitched scream.
Marco yelped.
“What the hell?” Marco shrieked. Before Marco could mutter another word, a bucket came flying out of nowhere, banging his head.
That’s when Marco realized. He had a new roommate. And it was a girl.
However, Marco felt no need to apologize. Instead, he simply walked away rubbing his head. What a way to start a day he thought, as he observed the changes in his dorm. What used to be a vacant space in the corner was now replaced by a small bed. Now the room felt stuffy and cramped, much to Marco’s disliking.
The bed wasn’t the only renovation done. A new closet had been added right next to his, and it made him feel quite uncomfortable. Compared to his, it was larger - almost twice as big- and adorned with golden carvings. Another rich family he thought. Marco hated the wealthy. They could get their hands on whatever they wanted no matter how brutal or cruel the method was.
From behind, he heard the door creak open. A dainty girl with emerald green eyes and wavy hazel hair stepped out, her face red in frustration. Marco took a glance at the girl’s clothes. Her uniform was plain, and not garnished with anything special nor conspicuous.
He stood staring at her, wondering whether she was a noble or not. The girl simply stared back.
“Well?”he asked, after a minute of staring at her,”What are you looking at?”
The girl didn’t reply. So he asked again.
“I said, what are you looking at?”
The girl remained silent, scared out of her wits. But Marco didn’t care. He took a stride towards the girl, bending his knees so he could glare at her face to face. His teeth gritted, he held her by the collar of her shirt and hissed,” Reply, you goddamn brat.”
“I’m sorry for throwing the bucket,” the girl stammered, shivering. Marco slammed the girl onto the wall.
“Is that all? he sneered, releasing her. She flopped onto the wooden floor with a thud and remained there, as still as stone.
Marco wondered if she had fainted. Prodding her with his foot, he made sure that she was unconscious before carrying her to bed. After all, he did feel guilt for being unreasonably harsh.
Taking off his pajamas, he became wary of the girl lying on the bed; and so, he decided to change his attire in the bathroom. From the closet, he grabbed his black cloak with the prefect sigil embedded on it. On the hanger was his golden medallion, the only memento of his parents who had abandoned him. No one knew of their whereabouts, and Marco didn’t have the need to know.
Opening the drawer underneath, he picked his navy blue pants. It wasn’t like he had a choice to make anyways. All his clothes were of the same color: either black, or a dark navy blue.
The girl still hadn’t awoken after he had changed, nor had she budged even the slightest inch. The dawn was breaking, and the breakfast bell had rung. At this state, the girl was probably going to sleep through the evening.
Marco sighed. He didn’t like helping others, but if he didn’t, it would linger in his mind. So he began to pinch her: first the face, then the shoulders. When she didn’t budge, Marco became exasperated. He began to smack her on the cheeks until it became bright red and slightly swollen. That’s when the girl moaned and woke up.
“Hey,” Marco cried out in vexation,”The bell rang.”
The girl stared at him blankly.
“The breakfast bell,” Marco sighed,”You’re gonna miss breakfast.”
Abruptly, tears began to stream down the girl’s eyes, and a wave of panic washed over him. What’s wrong with her? Marco thought.
“Are you alright?” he asked, though he didn’t care.
The girl nodded and stood up, rubbing her cheeks.
“Good,” he said, looking at the hourglass,”Breakfast’s gonna end soon.”
Unfortunately, by the time they arrived at the dining hall, all the food had been cleared off the tables. Marco sighed in frustration and whirled towards the girl to lash out at her. He opened his mouth to harshly scold her, but shut it when he saw her disappointed face. Who gets so disappointed over a meager meal? he thought as he trotted down the stairs, leaving her to mourn in silence.
