I snuggled into the pillow smiling as I heard the footsteps down the hall. It was true it did this on purpose, but the kitten didn’t need to know that. He plodded into the room scowling and groaned as he strode over to the side of my bed. I suppressed a laughed as I hid my smiling face from the boy.
“Oi, Vampire!” The catboy shook me lightly, “Get your lazy ass out of bed, you useless writer!”
“Mmm…” I mumbled rolling over and flashing a hazel eye at the cat, “I might decide to get up if you spoil me a little…?”
Starburst smirked looking almost devilish as he placed his lips a mere centimeter from my ear, “Is this what you mean, Sir Onyx…?” His breath was hot on my ear and my body responded with a shiver as he spoke in that sultry tone, “Now get out of bed before I shred your throat!”
“Yes, Starburst…”
. . .
Starburst had been working as my housekeeper for a little over a year and it was obvious that he still didn’t like me much. It could’ve been that although we’re the same age I was so much better off than him in an economic sense, but it didn’t seem like that was the sort thing that would bother him. The true reason for his behavior was beyond me and regardless of how he felt about me he always did his work well.
“Quit zoning out and drink your blood!” The ginger-haired kitten scowled pushing the glass toward me, “You have that book signing coming up, so make sure you’re prepared for that…”
Although we were the same age it was extremely apparent that I had no life skills whatsoever, and yet Starburst was easily able to care for me and himself without a complaint. I guess as a catboy he has to care for himself a lot better than I do. Catboys are rare these days...
“Yeah, Babe!” I winked at the kitten earning only a shake of his head, “Come on, you know I need the attention.”
“Don’t call me that.” Starburst said pushing my evening coffee across the table toward me, “I’m your caretaker, not your boyfriend. If you want someone to flirt with someone find somebody else, and more importantly you need to do your work otherwise your editor will blame me. Would you just focus on your deadlines for once?”
I wish you were my boyfriend… “I guess you’re right.” I gave a weak smile as I pulled away from the dining table and off to my study, “I’ll talk to you later, Starburst…”
“Wait!” He grabbed my wrist, “Do you really think you’re done drinking yet?” he pointed at my half-empty glass, “I’m sorry if I upset you…” His tone fell gentler as he placed the glass to my lips, “I have no right to tell you how to talk to me and I know you’ve been super stressed lately with this signing.” He brushed my hair through his fingers, “If you don’t mind me skipping out on the housework that day, I’ll accompany you.”
“You’re the best, Star!” I announced squeezing my arms around his waist as I downed the last few drops of red from the glass, “I don’t deserve to have someone like you beside me so much…”
“I’ll do anything so long as it makes life easier for you, Onyx.” His tone was formal again as he took my glass to the sink, “You have an article due later today, so get to it and I’ll see you again at lunch.”
. . .
“You made things surprisingly easy for me this evening…” Starburst commented as he helped me into my suit jacket as we prepared for the signing, “You’re not feeling sick or anything, are you?”
“I figured I should be a good boy and make this easy for me since you’re going through the trouble of going with me.” I admitted following his actions, “If not you might just have to punish me!” I winked smiling at the ginger-haired catboy.
He flushed a bright red as he helped me with my tie, “The things you say sometimes…” He muttered shaking his head, “There… Best be on our way then.”
I can get him to blush sometimes and respond to me like this. It probably only makes him dislike me all the more… I can’t help it though. Even if it’s just for a second I’d like to believe it’s possible that Star could like me just as much as I like him, but it’s all for naught. He deserves someone much more capable than me. Hell, the guy can hardly take a day off since I’m so bad at taking care of myself… What kind of adult am I?
. . .
“Are you sure you’re alright?” The cat questioned looking a bit nervous as he placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, “We don’t want anything bad to happen… This can always get rescheduled if you’re not feeling well.”
“No, it’s nothing like that…” I forced a smiled carefully brushing his hand from my shoulder, “I just have a lot on my mind today, I guess. Nothing major.”
“Well, if there’s something bothering you. You can tell me, you know.” This cat is the most oblivious creature I know… “My job is to take care of you after all and that includes more than just, your laundry and cooking… I wouldn’t want you suffering by yourself.”
“Geez, I really wish you could hear yourself sometimes…” I squeezed him my face growing hot as I hid my face in his shoulder, “You’re just unfair, Star…”
“What’re you going on about?” The boy shook me lightly, “Come on, we’re almost there… Onyx, would you stop being weird for five seconds?!?”
“I can’t!”
“Hah… “He huffed giving my cheek a poke, “Now you’re just being ridiculous, “Let’s get inside before we’re late… That editor of yours won’t try to blame me for that at least…”
“Star?” I looked up from his shoulder finding my eyes locked with the catboy’s bright green ones, “I love you.”
“You what now?!?” He flushed even harder than he did before and with my head so close to his chest I could hear just how hard his heart was beating, “Are you still half asleep after all.”
“Nope.” I confirmed slipping my arms around him as nuzzled my face against him, “I really love you and wish you’d be my boyfriend…” Shit… Shit… Shit… You have to let his adorableness get to you when you literally have to be around him all day! “Well, I guess you’re right… I don’t want Anthony to freak out on me for being late…” Now he’s going to think I’m playing with him… Augh… I don’t know what’s worse… “Let’s go.”
