“I’m right here.” I said softly petting his hair as two people marched inside, “I’m not going anywhere, so rely on me as much as you need…”
“Thanks…” Grace smiled at us as she cautiously watched their parents’ approach.
“I see you brought a friend with you…” Robin’s mother sighed tossing her purse on the table, “I thought maybe you would bring a girl home, but there seem to be a lot of things you don’t know how to do.”
“Ah, it’s a pleasure to meet you!” I smiled politely at the woman and her husband, “I’m Robin’s boyfriend, Sully.” My hands were rested on my lap as I continued smiling, “Thanks for having me for the holiday.”
“It’s nice to meet you!” His father chirped reaching a hand toward me. I flinched unsure what I was supposed to do, “I’m Robert.” He introduced.
“Uh yeah…” I muttered taking his hand and shaking it slowly, “Thanks for having me…” I repeated turning to Robin, What the bloody hell is going on here…? Why is he being nice to me?
Robin gave a shrug also seeming in disbelief at his father’s actions, “It’s good to see you again, Dad!” The red-haired boy greeted his father uncertainly, “I missed you.”
“Yeah, me too.” His father hugged him tightly as Robin’s arms lay limp at his sides, “It’s good to see someone by your side for once.” He cast a heated glance at his wife.
The woman’s face scrunched up as she let out a curt sigh before stomping out of the room, “You don’t even care about our son do you…?”
The man huffed crossing and uncrossing his arms as he stormed after the woman, “Sorry…” He apologized softly to us as he gave my shoulder a light pat, “Things have been…” He searched for the words, “Rough lately…”
. . .
After meeting his parents, we had gathered in his Grace’s old room the two of them playing video games while I watched. I liked games, but I wasn’t particularly good and didn’t especially want to embarrass myself.
“Hey Grace?” Robin mumbled giving his sister a curious stare as He and I snuggled into each other in a large beanbag chair, “What’s going on with Mom and Dad?” I shifted my glance from the TV to the red-haired girl as I munched on some pocky.
“I don’t exactly know either…” She admitted setting down her control making a thoughtful expression as she made a gentle shrug of her shoulders, “Since I moved out, I haven’t been here all that often, but from what I can guess Dad’s changed his mind about you.” She smuggled a chip from the bag in her lap slowly bringing it up to her lips, “It doesn’t seem like that could be it though, but who am I to say. Mom’s always been the decision-maker.”
“Yeah…” He agreed with a slight shake of his head, “It just feels weird for him to be that openly affectionate with me all of a sudden.”
“Hey, it’s you and me both.” She said returning his nod, “They’ve been like this since their last visit with you, so that must have been what triggered this. In the few times I’ve been over here they haven’t seemed to have met eye to eye on much of anything.”
“Don’t make that face…” I murmured bringing my arms around his shoulders, “No matter what happened between them this isn’t your fault. You can’t change yourself for them, so don’t let them think that you’re the problem.”
“I’m liking this boy more and more…!” Grace smirked with a shake of her head, “He’s been telling you what I’ve been trying to tell you for ages now, but it seems like you might just listen to him.
Robin’s eyes started to water as he turned burying his face in my shirt, “I love both of you so much.” I made a sad smile as I stroked his hair, “You’re the nicest people I’ve ever met…”
. . .
“This is your old room then?” I inquired as he led me into the room, “I’m guessing you haven’t been here in a while, then?” The room was almost entirely empty except for a bed against one wall and a desk against the other.
“Yeah, I moved out as soon as possible…” He nodded taking my hand as he walked toward the bed, I’m really sleepy.”
“It’s been a long day.” I agreed hugging his back, “I just want to sleep in your arms. Do you think that’ll make you rest easier?”
“I um…” He mumbled, “I wouldn’t mind if you did that…” I could feel his heartbeat through my hands on his chest, “I want to sleep in your arms too…”
“You’re so adorable…” I muttered noticing he was red all the way to his ears, “It seems like I’ve embarrassed you to a whole new degree this time, hm?” He said nothing as we found our way into the bed encasing each other deep within our arms, “Just let me know if I ever do something that you’re uncomfortable with…”
“Yeah…” He squeezed me tighter as he pulled the covers up to our shoulders, “Just never leave my side… I’m so glad you’re here… I would’ve been a mess if I had come here alone.”
