The red dot flashed repeatedly on the screen growing slightly closer…
“I think that thing is coming closer to us Kyle” Summer grabbed Kyle’s arm and pulled.
Kyle looked up, gazing all around them.
“I don’t see anything,” he shrugged.
Summer’s voice started to crack, “Kyle please let’s get out of here!”
Kyle heaved an aggravated sigh and stood, pulling Summer to her feet with him. He started to run, and the two of them ducked behind a nearby tree with a thick trunk. He clamped his hand over the speaker of the scanner, silencing the beeps that echoed through the woods.
They waited in silence as the red dot of unknown origin drew nearer…
Summer watched the screen and dug her nails into Kyle’s arm in fear. He hissed at the pain and bit his lip, but remained silent. Suddenly they heard twigs snap from the other side of the tree.
The red dot hovered just near the middle of the scanner’s radar.
Kyle drew in a breath and slowly, quietly peeked his head around the trunk of the tree. But his brows crinkled in confusion when he saw what stood in the clearing. There was a deer near the wreck of the VELH, and it looked like any normal deer apart from its antlers. They were elegantly curved and swirled unlike a normal deer’s, and they were adorned with small hanging leaves and strings of sparkling stones.
Kyle stared in confusion at the scene and thought to himself, “Those officers were chasing a deer? …A fashionable deer? What’s so important about that?"
Then the deer lifted its head and peered around the forest. Kyle swiveled back to hide behind the tree. The deer’s gaze rested on the tree for a moment, then continued to scan the area.
Kyle peeked his head back around to stare at the animal.
Suddenly the animal reared onto its hind legs. Kyle drew in a sharp breath thinking it was about to attack, when the leafy vines on the animal’s antlers started to grow and wrap themselves around the creature. Kyle’s eyes widened in disbelief. Then the vines snapped and fell off the animal, revealing not a deer, but a girl, without clothes, and with the same adornments woven into her hair.
Kyle turned back to Summer, his face white as a sheet.
Summer looked worried at his expression, “Kyle what is it?! Is it dangerous? What did you see?!”
Kyle smacked his lips a few times trying to wet his dry mouth. His eyes darted over to Summer and her jerked his thumb weakly in the direction of the crash.
“There’s a naked girl by the VELH…” he stuttered.
Summer’s worry turned into confusion.
“A naked girl?” She questioned.
Kyle nodded shakily and pointed over his shoulder. Summer poked her head around the tree and her eyes grew wide at what Kyle had just described.
She screamed, “WHAT THE FUCK?!”
The girl jolted upright at the sound of Summer’s scream, then she started to race away. She ducked behind several trees, and from running behind one and coming back into sight on the other side, the kids could see the girl had morphed back into a deer and was now sprinting away at top speed.
Kyle exploded into a run after the creature and Summer followed suit.
“Why are we chasing it?” Summer shouted to Kyle.
Kyle yelled back over his shoulder, “I have no damn clue, just run!”
They sprinted after the deer, dodging through trees and leaping over rocks in the ground. But no matter how fast they ran, the deer still grew farther and farther away.
“Ugh we’re going to lose it!” Kyle shouted, panting hard.
Then the deer made a sharp turn behind a rocky formation. The teens followed relatively close behind, skidding on the gravel around where the deer had gone. The other side of the rocks held a sparkling waterfall that splashed into a clear pond not far below.
“Look!” Kyle suddenly shouted, pointing.
Summer turned her gaze to follow his finger. The deer stood on the other side of waterfall, but before Summer’s eyes could focus on it, the deer leapt. It sailed down and landed in the water below with a loud splash. And it seemed to disappear below the frothing waves below the waterfall.
Summer freaked out, “Oh my god did that thing just DIE?!”
“Only one way to find out,” Kyle stated, before taking a running leap into the water as well.
“Oh what the hell?!” Summer shouted before jumping in after Kyle.
