Once he said it, I could hear the difference. A real voice has echo, depth that changes due to the infinitesimal movements of both speaker and listener. Nameless’s voice had none of that. It was like listening to someone speak through a set of headphones. Personally, I still really wanted to yell at him. It sounded incredibly satisfying. But if I was being pragmatic about this—which was admittedly very, very hard, considering that I hadn’t even really had time to process the fact that I had just been yanked into another world like the hero of some isekai web novel who ends up becoming an emperor and marrying like six girls (usually members of royalty and various magical species that basically amounted to elves and bunny girls)—I knew that as much as it grated on my nerves, I had to listen to what Nameless had to say. Because if there was one thing games and novels had taught me, it was that information was of the utmost importance in these sorts of situations. “Um, Yamada-san?” I called, hesitant to distrust her tirade. She was really on a roll, and had gotten well past insulting Nameless’s parents and moved on to insult whatever primordial ooze his ancestors had first risen from.
She halted and turned to me. “What?” Her voice was surprisingly normal for someone who had spent the past few minutes screaming at the sky. Maybe she had gotten some of her anger out.
“Nameless seems to want you to come over so he can… er… conference call to the inside of our heads?” I was unsure how to word it, so it ended up as a question.
Her lovely sapphire eyes narrowed and she stomped over. Ah. Maybe she hadn’t let out that much anger after all. “What does that bastard want now?” She ground out, glaring at the air near my head.
“What I want is to finish your tutorial. You do want to know where your three companions are, yes?” I could hear the annoying grin in his voice. But now that he mentioned it, I realized—Franchesca and I were alone. Aiko, Chiyo, and Ichigo were nowhere to be seen. And if they were wishing shouting distance, they certainly would have known where to find Franchesca.
I gritted my teeth. “Yes,” I said out loud, since I had no clue if he could hear my thoughts. “We would very much like to know where the others are.”
“If you want a favor, don’t forget to say ‘Please’.”
I wanted to stab him. With toothpicks. He would make a very colorful hedgehog. “Please,” I said through gritted teeth.
“Much better. Allow me to tell you a little bit more about the world you’re currently in. There are only two continents, and calling the water between them an ocean is a bit of a stretch. More like a very wide saltwater river. You can sometimes see the hazy outline of the other continent on the other side at the thinner parts if the day is very clear.” He continued in a teacherly tone. “Each continent has one kingdom, so no one ever felt the need to name them. The two of you are currently a couple of miles from the capital of the western kingdom. The western kingdom very much resembles your world’s medieval Europe, though I’d like to say that the society is overall more forward thinking and advanced thanks to the existence of magic. Your companions are currently approximately the same distance from the eastern kingdom’s capital, and we have just finished having nearly the same conversation. Though those three were much more pleasant to deal with. More loud questions than screaming fits and curses. I think Miss Tanaka may be beginning to embrace the idea. To the point, the eastern continent more resembles your world’s orient, similar to Japan around the Sengoku era. Since you all are going to enter the palaces with the nobility assuming you’re the unclaimed bastards of one of their own, the other three simply would not be able to pass without heavy attention in this court, and visa versa if I were to bring Miss Cavanough to the east. Miss Yamada, you are here because I felt it would be rather cruel to leave Miss Cavanough entirely on her own. They will simply assume that your mother was an immigrant who caught the eye of a noble. All five of you will reunite when they are brought along with the ambassador party in a month. For the time being, head to town. I’m sure you’ll be able to figure it out from there. Ta-tah! We’ll speak again soon!” And he was gone. I could sense it as clearly as if he had slammed a door in my face.
