I adjust my reading glasses and strain to see the clock on the wall of the library lobby. 'It's late. Almost time to lock up'. I say to myself as my eyes adjust. I am far sighted and the small print of my book doesn't help any.
I'm the librarian in my small town. I like reading. I always have and spent so much time here that I just got the job after high school. I never wanted anything else but a quite corner and a good book for myself, so to have it everyday is a dream come true.
I place a book mark in my novel and begin locking up. I gather stray books into a cart. I empty a few waste baskets. I shut off the lights in the study rooms. I check the restrooms. As I reach to knock on the men's restroom door, a man exits.
I'm taken by surprise for a moment. He is wearing a black hoodie and resembled the grim reaper for a moment. His eyes are blue and that's all I can really tell from beneath that hoodie. He appears as surprised as I am. He walks past me and apologizes, 'I'm sorry. I'll get out of your way.' Then he quickly exits the library. 'No problem. Have a good day.' I say but he's already halfway out the door. That's strange. I've never seen him here before. Only a few regulars ever come by during summer when schools not in session.
I continue locking up but I can't stop thinking of that guy. I didn't see him reading anything. He couldn't check out a book or use the computers without a library card and I know I didn't issue him one. Maybe he just stopped in to use the restrooms? I decide to shrug it off and end my work day. 'A mystery for another time.' I say as I lock the front doors and walk to my car in the parking lot.
