The moon's light barely touched the City of Neheria as thick fog covered the skies. In the dark of the night, even the chirping crickets fell silent. Nothing other than the evening ambiance coated the city, and the cold air enveloped all who dared to venture out.
But even in these conditions, two Detectives tread through the lightless park, illuminated only by the blue and red hue from the lights of the police vehicles parked all around the area.
"Nathan, it's good to see you." said Mike, the head of the Police Officers.
"But it sure isn't nice to see this." replied Nathan, one of the Detectives.
"What do you think Kris, another similar case?" he asked
"I don't know, and we won't know for sure unless we get close." replied Kris, the other detective.
"That's true. Follow me you two, I'll take you to the body." said Mike.
Together, they crossed the police line into a colder area of the park, with less lights, and denser grass. It was an area less explored, but one particular man decided to spend his night near the park's lake, surrounded by nothing other than trees and darkness.
In there, only the three of them were present. The rest of the police stayed near their cars in fear of the Heart Breaker, who may still be in the area.
Mike lifted up the cover of the corpse. Blood stained the cover, but more blood stained the clothes of the man. The chest had been cut open, and his heart was taken out.
"Leonard Hart, Head of Security." said Nathan.
"Leonard, but that's impossible! He was just at the office, I contacted him a few minutes ago." said Mike.
Nathan looked at him straight in the eye.
"That's can't be Leonard. Did you hear any background noise during the call?" asked Nathan.
Mike thought for a few moments before opening his mouth again.
"No, it was dead silent." he replied.
"Except for one voice." he continued.
"Was it a male or a female?" asked Nathan.
"Neither, it was a recording." replied Mike.
"Heart Breaker." said Nathan.
Nathan walked towards the lake and grabbed the cigarette box from his pocket. He lit one up and started smoking.
"Detective, you know that's illegal right?" said Mike.
"You won't tell, I know that." replied Nathan.
He let out a puff of smoke before turning towards the corpse again.
"So, we're pretty much injured now as a city." said Nathan.
"What should we do?" asked Mike.
Nathan looked at the corpse once more, looking as sharply as he could, trying to examine even the smallest of details on the corpse.
"Kris, shine a light on the body." he said.
Kris brought out her phone and turned on the flashlight. True enough, something shined on the chest of the corpse. Nathan grabbed it and tried to pull it out. However, most of it was stuck inside as it cut in pretty deep. He tried to pull with all his strength, but it was no use.
With heavy breaths, he sat down on the cold grass and stared at the shard. It was a custom blade, built to cut through even the thickest of bones. On the tip of it is an image of a broken heart.
Nathan took out his phone and snapped a photo.
"Kris, I want you to stay here with Mike and see what else you can uncover." said Nathan.
"Where are you going?" asked Kris
"I'm just going to give the Department of Security a visit." said Nathan, as he pulled out his gun.
He exited out of the police tape and nodded at a few officers before boarding his car.
He pulled out a folder from under his seat and revealed a photo of his class batch.
"How unfortunate Leonard, you had such great potentials ahead of you." he said.
He placed the photo back into the folder and drove away.
Looking around, the city wasn't what it used to be. What was once a utopia bustling with activity is now a ghost town in the evening, all because of the event that occurred twenty years ago: The Burning of Neheria.
The cause of the fire was a single factory explosion that created a chain reaction all across the city.
On that day, time stopped in Neheria, all was still, and nothing moved, other than one figure who stood above the inferno. The root and cause of it all: The Heart Breaker.
Everyone thought that that was the last of his grievous acts, but he still continued on up to this day, crippling the city one step at a time. It would be no surprise if he would blow the city up once again.
But this time, he won't succeed. All that it requires is one step, and that step should be right before the Heart Breaker's. Nathan simply needs to be one step ahead.
But right now, he is behind.
He stops right at the entrance of the Department of Security. Located at a rather remote area of the city, anyone who dared to get near would've been warned, but the building was awfully, and eerily, silent.
With gun in hand, he pushed the gates open and entered the entrance of the building. The lights were on, but nobody was at the front desk. Slowly, he crept to the side of the desk, inching slowly to the side one step at a time.
But what met him on the other side made him pause.
Blood flowed from the floor right below the desk, and the corpse of a woman sat lifelessly on the overturned chair.
Nathan brought out his phone and called Mike. After a few rings, Mike answered.
"Come quick! Bring your officers." he said.
The lights suddenly shut off.
"He's here" he continued.
