He woke up and got dressed right away. He had to go to the campus hospital to get tested, so he would have to walk instead of taking the bus. It was about a fifteen minute walk and the whole time Cal was trying everything he could think of. He tried to control water and earth and fire and air, then he tried light and life, but still nothing. When he got to the hospital, Sarah was there.
"I managed to get a shift this morning so that I could be at your test!" She surprised him.
He smiled. "Aww. Thanks Sarah."
She led him into the large testing room where a pair of doctors waited with a specialist. The specialist was a man that knew about all of the elements and the ways they could manifest and the best ways to test for them.
The room was a large circular room with light coming in through two windows high up near the ceiling. There was padding along one wall and an assortment of different element sources along another.
"Hello Cal, your friend Sarah here has told us all about you." The man said with a smile. "I'm Jebediah, but you can call me Jay. I will be conducting your test today."
Cal shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Jay."
Jay sat up and picked up his pen. "So Cal, have you noticed anything strange so far today or have nay ideas what your element could be?"
Cal shook his head. "I tried everything I could think of on the way here, but I've got no idea."
Jay nodded. "It can never be as easy as that can it?" He laughed. "Okay, let's get started. Approach the wall of elements over there. Do you feel any of them pulling to you in any way, maybe it feels like an odd connection?"
Cal walked over and started to clear his mind and focus on himself. He felt connections, but they were everywhere. He said so to Jay.
"Hmm. You said that you couldn't control the elements on your way here though right? So it isn't like you are the first person to control every element or anything." He looked over his papers. "Why don't you try to pull on one of those connections?"
Cal looked at all of them. He picked a small one nearby and tried to pull on it. They were held together very strongly.
"Nothing happened, the connection is very strong." He said to Jay.
"Hmm." Jay looked over all of his notes furiously. "Very strange."
There was a short silence where he was looking through his notes trying to find anything even remotely related to this.
Cal decided to try to sever a connection while he waited. He felt one of the... nodes? That seems like a good enough word for it, Cal decided. He felt one of the nodes that had a connection with two other nodes and severed them all. He opened his eyes, but didn't see anything. Odd.
He looked for more nodes like that and found that one of the element sources had a huge amount of the same exact type of node, with one connecting to two others. He tried to sever all of them at once.
He opened his eyes, but still it looked like nothing changed.
"Uhh... Sir?" One of the doctors said in a panicked tone.
Jay looked up from his notes in the hope that she at least had an idea of what Cal's power could be. "What?"
She pointed. "The water in the water jar just disappeared." She said in the same tone.
They all looked at the water jar, seemingly empty, and it clicked.
"Holy shit." Cal said, a little scared of himself.
Jay looked at him. "You can get fight an element? Like a null? That is something that people had expected would develop eventually. Congrats, that is an incredibly powerful ability" He said to Cal.
"No sir." Cal said. He looked at all of the nodes in the jar and connected them again, this time connecting two of the first type of node and two of the second. The jar filled with a liquid again.
"You can undo it as well?! Wow! That is something." Jay said.
"No sir. I can control the bond between atoms I think. That isn't water now, it's hydrogen peroxide. I took the oxygen and hydrogen apart and then put them back together." Cal said, a little worried. "Is that an affinity that you can even have?"
Everyone looked at him in awe and fear. Jay nodded to one of the doctors, who inspected the jar and did find it to be full of hydrogen peroxide.
"Well. I suppose it is now. If I had to venture a guess, I would say that the United Elements will be in touch, but unless you tell them, we aren't allowed to because of the privacy laws. Be careful Cal, I hope you know your chemistry." Jay said to him.
Cal left, mostly confused. What would this mean for him? What would he do next?
