"The way people got turned into immortals had to do with some kind of magical object, which most of the Eld called the Holy Grail, whether the legends were true or not. The Council has complete control over the object. They keep it safe and also have the ability to vote on giving an important mortal the option to become one of the Eld. The Eld has always been a relatively small group. You have the original immortals, the power hungry people who found a way to become immortal, and then you have the famous people. About half of the immortal population is made up of people who made some lasting improvement on society. Einstein, Shakespeare, Tesla, Socrates, and even me." John looked at him confused.
"They offered me immortality while I was still somewhat young. My name is Leonardo DaVinci." John's jaw dropped, but Leon rolled his eyes and carried on. "Me and many of the famous scientists and inventors accept modern times, we want to focus on the future of the world. We took modern names and follow modern discoveries. Others, like the famous philosophers, artists, or the original immortals like to cling to the past."
He shook his head. "Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah. So the Council had the ability to create new immortals, but they also had another more secretive power. They had some way of making someone, usually a mortal because in an emergency you could kill them, into a named one. The Eld had to be called to a hearing since a named one is an incredibly powerful being. Let me put it this way. Do you know what Pompeii, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the Plague have in common?" Leon asked.
John shrugged. "They were large disasters with a lot of deaths?"
Leon nodded. "But, you are missing the point. They were all done by a named one." John gulped.
"The leading theory on the source of immortality is currently that someone somehow go into contact with the Elder Gods. It probably makes the least sense of any possible answer, but it fits the best. The Holy Grail could have been created a million different ways, but a named one? They are still mostly a mystery to us, but what we do know fits that theory." He took a much larger drink for this next part.
"Around the time of World War II, there is a reason that the Council did not step in. That nasty immortal I was telling you about was currently leading the council and at the time was leading the immortals to a war as well. Before the purge, the Council usually kept a named one at all times. The first named one was taught when they were created, and they were taught by the people who were powerful enough to know how to make one. After that the named one trained a teacher. This teacher lived on after the named one either died or was sacrificed during use." Leon said this with a bitter taste in his mouth. "The teacher was able to teach them to control themselves and then learned more from them as they learned on their own. Once the nasty immortal was in power he wanted to make sure that he kept power. He sent the named ones to kill the half-mortals. The teacher found out about this and took it upon himself to stop it. Many half-mortals were lost before the teacher could kill his own students. He had to hunt down each of them. The Council at the time had also made many of them, knowing they could use the power. Normally there was only one at a time in the case of the most dire emergencies. The teacher hunted and killed every one of the named ones. Finally he went up to the council and called a hearing of the Eld."
"The teacher revealed the truth about what happened and who was responsible. He also revealed that the Council was turning a blind eye to the Holocaust." Most of the Eld voted to remove the Council members that were responsible. They were sent to a separate hearings by the new Council. Most of them went down without a fight and were punished and imprisoned. Two fought and argued. The nasty immortal and another who agreed with his beliefs. They were finally sentenced to the treatment they put on others. They were at ground zero of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which was the last time that the Council was allowed to create and use a named one. The teacher saw to it that they were dead and then killed himself to make sure that this could never happen again."
John was shocked. "What about all of the innocent people that were killed?!" Leon shook his head. "Where do you think the two prisons for immortals had been? They decided to purge the evil immortals from existence. No innocents were lost, but many did die." Leon had a faraway look in his eyes, but then snapped out of it.
"The process of creating a named one is known by very few. Only the ones who were on the Council during the Great Purge. I only know because there was a time during the Cold War that they needed a new teacher just in case." He shook his head. "They take a mortal and then they do something with them, hand them over to the Elder Gods or something, I am not allowed to know the whole process. For some reason the Elder Gods will give them a new name, usually one of the Elder Gods themselves, and will be given a minute amount of that God's power. That's the weird thing about you though, we don't know what Elder God you would be connected to. I thought it was the one that was behind the Bubonic Plague, but that wasn't it, I must have heard it wrong. You are still a mystery to us. Maybe we will find out more tomorrow." They sat and drank and thought in silence.
