We are at the beginning of the nineteenth century in the Court of the Holy Inquisition, a place feared by faithful and infidels alike, where thousands of women saw their lives end because of an absurd accusation. Thanks to the “Enlightenment era”, the barbaric practice of witch hunting had been almost completely eliminated, but wars in Europe began and the region was in chaos. The new viceroy was a tyrant, he was a general who did everything possible to eliminate any threat of insurrection. Since they heard the news of the uprisings in the north, everyone was on alert.
While rulers, military and rebels were fighting in the mountains, in the city the religious were in charge, but with so many dead in nearby places and the lack of food, due to the taking of some enclave cities by rebel groups, diseases sprouted and with them the old superstitions. Because when things don't have an apparent meaning there is no better option than to blame others, or fight against the central power. The revolutionary shouts were heard, in France and in the young America, they already did it in the North, it was the hour of the South. Goodbye Empire and welcome freedom.
Hippolytus, that was the name of the soldier who was guarding Luna, our protagonist.
"Aren't you a royalist? Why do you show me this French coin?"- asked Luna to the soldier.
"Because I've decided to help you. On the condition that if you turn out to be a witch, you will join the cause!" - he replied
"Actually my family is already part of it. And do you really still think I'm a witch?" - she looked at him with suspicious eyes.
"I do not know, but if we have at our side someone who killed a viceroy ..."- he said while smiling.
"Thing that I didn't do "- Luna interrupted.
"Yes, whatever. Unimportant details. "- said the boy - "Look you already told me that you are in favor of the cause, the independence, and we need people. So we will get you out of there, we just need a distraction! And do you know which is the best distraction?"
"A witch?" - asked the girl.
"Yes, that too ... but I meant an angry crowd ... with torches!"
"I got a feeling that I will not return from this." - Luna said - "but I will listen to you. It's not like I have a better option"
While they were talking they arrived in the city. She descended from the float still handcuffed, people who passed by looked at her with some dread. It seems that the news had spread quickly. A witch and a murderer, is there anything better?
The cell was very similar to her old monastery room with the difference that it had bars and a guard at the door, it was there where she spent the night.
At this time a trial was being carried out for the crime of witchcraft. They gave up adding the crime of murder since there was not enough evidence and the body was effectively in a state of rot.
The judges in charge of the process were located on one side of the room and on the other there was the executioner with a cloth that covered his face, ready to execute any given order.
"Gentlemen"- said a priest with a brown robe and a prominent belly- At this moment we will issue the sentence to Miss Luna Aguirre, daughter of Don Aristo Aguirrre, merchant of the New World Kingdoms and owner of a printing press. She is accused of the crime of witchcraft under two aspects, the use of black magic to deceive local soldiers and the burial of bodies.
"I didn't dig it up, I found it".- Luna interrupted.
"Silence! Let's proceed Therefore she is condemned to die in a bonfire. If she dies it means that she is not a witch and her sins will be forgiven . The fire will be responsible of exterminating the evil spirits inside her body." - said the priest.
"Will they burn me alive?" Luna thought "it seems that in the end I will have the same end as my mother."
