The following day, Greer sat there with her brand new phone. Staring at it. She had all the numbers added back in, including Officer Bardoe’s number. Now she was sitting there, trying to figure out if she should call. Nothing had been able to be recovered from the old phone, and work had claimed she was left some messages she never got and couldn’t recover. She knew she should have set up that cloud voicemail thing. Live and learn, she guessed.
It had been a hectic week or so, but he hadn’t tried to call either. Maybe he wasn’t interested? Maybe he preferred daintier women? Would he believe that she was just nervous and busy at the same time?
The stuff she told the guys was getting bigger than she thought. No, not really bigger just… more complicated? How did she think this stuff worked then, it just magically showed up and did things for people? She always was a bit bad at this sort of thing. But it was getting done, and now she just had to, ya know, call the nice officer with the cute butt and everything would be fine. Or it wouldn’t be.
Greer sighed and rolled onto her back in her bed. She didn’t even live on her own. Would that seem weird? Maybe he understood the whole thing about people with powers. He was a cop. He had to deal with this stuff. Then there was the whole power thing. How would she go about telling him? Now? Later? Would he think it was weird that she was making a support group? Would it seem like bragging? He knew so little about her. Or at least she thought so.
Greer closed her eyes a moment. Sliding. That’s what her powers turning on felt like and she was starting to slide. Think about something else, so it wouldn’t affect anything she cared about. Mmmm cake. Dewi bringing home surprise cake. Greer kept that thought until she felt the mental slide take off. If this worked, she'd let Sato know later. He wanted some data on it. Greer rolled over and wrote down in her notebook the time and what was happening. She had started doing any time she THOUGHT something was happening now. It had led to Sato eliminating a lot of things, which was good. The bad thing was it seemed to activate for minor things about 2 to 3 times a day.
Her current job wouldn’t care of course. The pendulum would make sure it didn’t go too far or too big. Sato had suggested maybe she get on the medication regularly, but she wasn’t sure she trusted it herself. Sure it worked, but what if there were long term side effects from constant use?
Course it meant the boys had instead taken for it to mean the next best thing would be to either distract her or force her to listen to them calling things lucky. She looked at the number again. Maybe she’d feel braver after cake, if it came. Instead she simply turned on her MP3 and started blasting some J pop and baby metal playlist. She just needed something to clear her head a bit.

Dewi came home and was smiling with a box. “Guys! I have cake!”
Greer came out quickly. “Yes! Cake!” she was writing something down and then going to grab it. “Time for an afternoon treat!”
Dewi stuck his tongue out. “Luce will throw a fit.”
Greer smiled. “Then that’s, as you guys keep saying, just my luck.” She was grinning, confident she had figured out the bad luck for this action. Dewi was just surprised that ‘luck’ was starting to not be a forbidden word.
“If you say so… You call Officer cutie pants?” He watched, grinning as she cut the cake and started to serve it up.
Greer shook her head. “Nope. Um, you came with cake, so after cake.”
Blake came out. “Hey Dewdrop, how was everything?”
Greer grinned, “He brought cake.”
Blake watched as she handed him a plate. “You aren’t normally this happy around sweets.”
Dewi chuckled. “It’s a distraction. She’s too scared to call him.”
Greer rolled her eyes. “Guys…. CAKE. Come on. Nothing better than a surprise cake.” She took a bite, expecting Luce to come in ... and instead ran to the trash can as fast as she could.
Dewi looked innocently at her. “Greer, what’s wrong? Don’t you like-“
Greer looked to him. “…. Dewi if you did that on purpose I’m disowning you and telling Blake to do the same.”
Dewi blinked. A spicy chocolate cake should have been a joke Greer would have enjoyed. Had a laugh. Then he heard Blake behind him.
“Ugh Dewi- this is vile! What is this?”
Dewi was now worried. Were they both that mad? He was about to throw themselves upon their mercy when-
“Dammit. You got…. Parsley cake? I really wanted some cake too…” Greer moaned as she went to the notebook.
Blake picked up on it first. “….Greer did you use your powers to summon… cake?”
Greer sighed. “Well it was coming on because I was nervous about making the call by myself and-“
Dewi breathed a sigh of relief… it wasn’t directly his fault but… “I put the order in for cake this morning, when did this happen?”
“Mmmm 2 hours ago when I felt the slip I guess…. Gotta make a note of it for Sato.”
Blake looked to Dewi. “I think we should get her to call the officer before anything else goes wrong.”
Dewi nodded a bit. “I have an idea for a good distraction then… and maybe a confidence boost.”
