It was the day after Sully and I had arrived at my parents’ house, and surprisingly I had woken up before him. So, that’s what he looks like when he’s sleeping… I smiled as Sully snuggled closer to me in his sleep, I think I’ve seen it once before, but I can’t remember exactly… Sully looked so peaceful, He’s so cute…
A light knock resounded from the opposite side of the door causing me to flinch and look back down at Sully who only groaned and rolled over, “Robin?” My father appeared from the other side looking rough as ever with heavy bags beneath his eyes as he rubbed the back of his head nervously, “There’s something we should--!” I cut him off with a shake of my head before placing a finger to my lips and pointed to the boy resting by my side, “Right…” His expression softened a half step as He nodded and waved for me to follow him.
“I’ll be right back…” I told the sleeping Sully ruffling his hair and kissing his forehead, “Rest well, okay?”
. . .
“So, what’s going on with you and Mom?” I asked as soon as My dad and I got into the kitchen, “That’s what this is about, right?
“I’m so sorry…” The man clung to me sobbing into my shoulder as he fumbled out the words, “Nothing I say can make up for it…” I was at a loss my words as he kept going, “I can’t take this anymore! I miss you, Robin!”
I held onto his shoulders slowly trying to make sense of what the man was telling me, “What’s going on? What’re you going on about?”
“Robin, you’re my child…” He pulled away from me his eyes still moist as he stared at me a moment silent, “Your sister doesn’t know yet, but I’m getting out… It’s been this way for a while, and as much I as I love your mother, I can’t stand her anymore. What I’m trying to say is we’re getting a divorce.”
“What…?” I mumbled taken aback by his sudden confession, “You’re not screwing with me, right?”
“No, we’ve been considering this for quite some time actually…” He looked a bit sheepish now that he had finally admitted it, “I’m sure we had you surprised yesterday… I just can’t stand the way she treats you, Robin… She can mistreat me as much as she wants, but I can’t stand the way things have become for you. I’m really glad you brought your boyfriend here… It seems like he treats you really well and it makes me glad to see you smile like that.”
. . .
“Good morning!” I cheered as I went back to bed hugging Sully close to me, “Hm…” I chuckled burying my face into the curve of his neck, “I got up before you this time~!”
“Yeah…” Sully mumbled grabbing the hands strapped around him, “What are you doing up so early?” I gulped earning a huff from the brown-haired boy as he removed my arms and turned to face me before straddling my lap, “What happened?” He was almost teary-eyed as he brought one of my hands to his lips kissing it gently, “Did they upset you again?”
“It’s not like that…” I smiled my face going a light shade of red as I wrapped my arms around the boy’s waist, “We should relax like this more often…” I smirked as Sully only grumbled in response, “Don’t look at me like that… You’re just too sweet…” He shook his head as he crossed his arms unhappily, “It seems my parents are getting a divorce and well it seems that my dad has decided to accept me.”
The wrinkles of his anger and concern faded away as his mouth dropped open a tad, “What?” He slid over his chest now resting on mine as he peered at my face curiously, “I don’t know how to respond…” I pulled my arms around his shoulders as he nuzzled into me, “I’m glad your dad is going to be there for you, but are you okay with this…?”
“Yeah…” I said nodding, but really was it okay for us be close after all this time? “I didn’t have to win you over though…”
“No… I guess your face was just too much for me…” He squirmed up a bit so that we were face to face, “Can I kiss you now?”
“Anytime, Love…”
. . .
“So, you two get up to something naughty last night?” Grace teased leaning over my shoulder later that day, “I mean it was just the two of you all night long…”
“What’re you saying…?” I shook my head as my face went a slight shade of red, “I’m not going to do that in my parents’ house…”
“That never you used to stop you before…” She sneered pulling playfully on my cheeks, “You really must want to keep this one, huh?”
“Of course, I do…” I muttered pulling a bag of chips from the cupboard, “Shouldn’t you be helping get ready for tonight too, or something?”
“What’s the point?” She huffed finally letting me go as she frowned, “It’s just going to be us this year and with Mom and Dad…”
“Sully’s here though…” I mentioned softly tracing my finger in circles on the kitchen counter, “I want it to be something special… Anyway,” I sighed pulling away from my lovesick thoughts, “Where did Mom end up? I haven’t seen her all day…”
“Hell, if I know…” The red-haired girl groaned, “She left early this morning and never came back. If she does wander her prissy ass back here, she better be in a better mood than she was yesterday…” Her smirk returned as she decided to respond to the softer parts of my statement, “Is romance all you think about now? I’m happy for you, little brother!” She ruffled my hair.
“Is there anything I can help with?” Sully asked he came into the kitchen still sporting his pajamas from last night. My clothes were a bit big on him and drooped ever so slightly from his skinny frame. I yelped hiding the red of face in my hands before hunching over the counter, “Is he okay?”
“Oh, don’t worry!” Grace chuckled. She better not… “Someone’s just embarrassed that they wanted the two of you to spend a really romantic new year together.” I really hate her sometimes…
“Oh…!” Sully sang slinging his arms around my sagging shoulders, “I have plenty of ideas if you want something especially romantic~!”
What happened to him being shy around me…? “Well, I just wish it could be the two of us!” I purred my face only flushing more… Why does it have to be like this?
. . .
Everything went smoothly for a while. We ate and laughed as we celebrated the coming of the new year. I thought about all the new memories I wanted to make with Sully in the coming year. Even dad seemed to be enjoying himself despite his bitter situation.
“It’s almost time, Robin!” Sully had his arms around me once again as we both had our eyes glued to the television screen. There were only a few minutes left… “I’m so glad we got to spend today together…”
“Me too…” I chuckled returning his touch smiling contentedly, “I bet we’ll spend so much more time together this year too…”
“If you two keep being cheesy, I might just have to throw something at you…” Grace shook her head.
“I thought you said you were happy for me…” I mocked tears only holding onto the brown-haired boy even tighter.
“Hey, I’m supposed to be the one teasing you not the other way around…” She grumbled pouting as she crossed her arms, “I need a drink…”
It was just then that she returned. The front door slammed against the wall as she burst in. Her hair and face were a mess as she lumbered into the living room looking more like a rabid dog than a person. Her lips were pulled back into a menacing snarl as her eyes caught sight of Sully and me.
“Get away from each other…” She growled lowly, “My house my rules!” The woman stuck her hands between us forcing us apart with great force, “Robin, I invited you here in the goodness of my heart even though all you do is embarrass me and here you throw it right back in my face. What kind of son are you?”
“Gnn…” Sully whimpered as his body collided with the wall and I collapsed falling over the arm of the couch
“I thought I told you not to come back here if you’re going to talk to my son that way!” My father barked coming in from fetching the champagne from the cooler in the garage, “Jeremy…” He sighed setting the bottle on the table, “Just leave here before I call the police…”
“This is my house.” She responded making a face like she had won, “If anything I should be kicking these two out!” My mother jabbed her thumb at Sully and me.
“So, that gives you the right to assault people!” Grace broke in stepping between us and the woman, “I think we should take a nice long drive…” She grabbed the older woman’s wrist dragging her outside.
“Hah….” My father sighed suddenly looking much older than he really was, “I’m sorry, you had to see that boys…” He forced a smile heading for his bedroom, “I think I just want to be alone for a while.
With that it was just the two of us in the living room as the minutes to midnight continued ticking away, “Are you alright?” I asked my boyfriend helping him to his feet as he winced slightly, “You hit the wall pretty hard, huh?”
“Yeah…” He clung to me, “Sorry, for making this trip so difficult for you… I guess it would’ve been better if I stayed home, huh?”
I tapped his shoulder causing his eyes to meet mine, “Sully, that’s not true and you know it. You’re not the one causing trouble here.” I took his face in mine delicately placing our lips together as the sounds of midnight sounded from the television, “Happy New Year…” I whispered placing my chin to his shoulder, “I love you…”
“I love you too…”
