Guarding Galaxies

Chapter 1 (Rewrite)

Chapter 1 (Rewrite)

Sep 26, 2019

You jolt awake as the craft jerks to the side almost flinging you from your bed if not for the restraint harness. You sit up in bed and take a deep breath, “get it together Aliyah” you say to yourself as you reach for your data-pad and comm-link. As you secure the comm-link to your wrist you notice multiple messages on your data-pad from the crew of the ship warning of the possibility of sudden shifts to the crafts course due to space debris. The message reads “Dear Passenger, we have received news of a battle that has broken out which intercedes with the path of our regular course. Please be advised that we are taking an alternate route through an old hyperspace lane that tracks through an area which has a large amount of space debris. Due to the space debris there may be some sudden movements performed by the pilot to maneuver around them to ensure the safety of all of our passengers on board. Please stay in your cabins until notified that it is safe to leave and move around the ship. If you require any assistance please contact staff as you would normally, If you require medical assistance please use the emergency channel, Thank You”. You check the on-board navigation computer to see how far you are from your destination, and are surprised to see that you are only about an hour out from the docks of the Raak Major Space Station. You unfasten the harness and slide out of bed. You hobble over to the communications panel near the door and scroll down the list of options until you spot the room service menu. Upon selecting the room service option on the screen a message pops us reading “Room Service is not available at this time”. You rub your head in irritation and sigh. “Just my luck” you mumble to yourself as you wander over to bathroom so that you can splash your face with some cold water to wash away the fatigue from brought on by hyper light speed travel. You bend over the sink and flick the tap leaver over to the right ensuring the water is as cold as possible. You spend a few moments staring down at the water flowing from the nozzle of the tap. You stick your hands under the tap filling them with water. You bring your hands up to your face and splash the water onto yourself repeating a few times over. Your head now feels lighter and your train of through clearer having the cool liquid splashed over your face. You look up into the mirror and look yourself in the eyes falling into deep contemplation. You slap your cheeks “Here we go, the first day of the rest of my life” you think to yourself as you wipe the cool water from your face.

You leave the bathroom and walk over to the bench where your suitcase and your equipment case lay. You unlock your suit case and retrieve from it a blue uniform. You put the uniform on checking yourself in a small hand mirror ensuring that it looks as neat and tidy as possible. After putting on your uniform you close your suitcase and reengage the lock. You open up the second case and inside it sits a suit of armor. The armor sitting in the case is a high performance combat armor made using the best nano technology in the empire. You contemplate putting the armor on over your uniform however you decide against it as you want to make a good impression on your first day and decide it wouldn’t look right. You close the case and seal the lock and start packing up the rest of your belongings. You check the data pad next to the door and see that the room lock down has been rescinded and that you are now free to walk about the ship. You decide to head to the front of the craft where the seating area for landings and take off is located. After all you want to be ready for the when the ship comes into dock at the space station. You watch as the few other passengers whom are slowly emerging from their rooms around the same time as you slump into their designated seats appearing groggy from the effects of hyper space travel. You sit down into the seat that was designated to you and lean back into it shifting around until your sitting in a comfortable position. Your heart suddenly stops as a hand grasps your shoulder, you spin around to see Simon grinning ear to ear as he plops himself down into his chair next to you. “I’ve finally managed to scare you” he says as he places his jacket between him feet. “I’m surprised you’re so nervous, you always looked so confident while we were training in the academy” Simon says teasingly. “I never expected to get put out here” you reply biting your lip as to restrain yourself from getting angry. “Just not as tough as you think you are” Simon teases as your final thread snaps. You pull a small metal tooth pick out of your back pocket and thrust it behind Simon's ear. “Garhh” Simon cries as blood trickles down his neck. “What the hell was that for? Over the top much don’t you think ally?” Simon questions as he wipes the blood from his neck. “Blood on my new uniform already, I shouldn’t be all that surprised that you’re the cause of it”. “Looks like you learned your lesson” you say with a smug grin on your face. You stare out the window you can see the run down space station in which the ship is preparing to dock with. As the shuttle travels closer to the space port you notice how different it is to that of the central systems. You see a single ship docked at the hanger and that there was no one patrolling the hanger bays. You also notice the clear lack of maintenance done to the station in recent years. As the ship begins to enter the hanger bay you notice a single person standing at a podium as if waiting for someone. You feel a jolt as the shuttle touches down in one of the stations hangers. After a short message plays over the ships PA system you get up out of your seat and head back to your room. You pick up your suitcase off of the bench and place it onto the ground. You pick another smaller case and place it on top of the suitcase. You then shift the case holding your armor back onto the ground and pick up the final case placing it on top of the one containing your armor. You do one final check of the room making sure you’re not leaving anything behind. You leave your room and head back to the front of the ship. You see Simon waiting for you at the off ramp and head over to him. “Come on Ally we don’t have all day you know?” Ignoring his snark comment you descend the ramp into and stepping off into the stations hanger. You head over to the large doors at one end of the hanger. Once you make it through the doors you walk out onto a platform. You notice that the station is in much worse condition that it originally looked from the outside. The guard rails around the platform were rusted, and the communications stations below all looked to be broken with all of the screens either being cracked or shattered and wires poking out the sides of the access panels. I guess they though fixing them was a waste of time since very few people travel to this little back water world. “Nothing like the central systems hey Ally” exclaims Simon looking dejectedly at the surrounding space station. You look around the room once more from your vantage point before heading down the stairs towards a sign board. You look up at the sign board and see a lot of crossed out directions. Thankfully the transport rental bay has yet to be crossed out. Following the directions on the sign you walk over to the booth with a sign written in the Old script and the picture of a small ship as it’s logo. You press a small buzzer sitting on the counter which has a small label underneath it that reads “service”. You wait for several moments before you hit it again. A few seconds later you see a short yellow four-armed man walk out from a room in the back of the booth. You recognize him as being an Amorian, a people who used to be huge players in the slave trade before the Gallian Empire conquered them and ended the slave trade. “Yeah whatta ya want” he says in a rough thunderous tone. “We need to rent a small two-person speeder to travel over to The Imperial Gallian Intergalactic Police Force station located about 2 clicks from here” Says Simon. The man looks us up and down before bursting into laughter. He murmurs something under his breath before throwing a key card down onto the desk in front of us. “I’ll charge that to the station. Go through that door to the right of the booth. Follow the corridor down to the end and you will come to a small hanger the ship is the one on the far right side” he says as he motions behind him. As we head down the corridor and start towards the craft we hear him start laughing again as he wanders back into the back room. You share a quick puzzled glance with Simon before you come up to the ship. After one quick look at it you start to doubt whether it could even handle the pressure of space let alone take them to their destination. The reluctantly board the craft being sure to securely secure their seat belts. As you go to start the ship you notice that almost every screen in front of you is damaged in some way and that most of the buttons no longer exist. “This isn’t legal” Simon mutters under his breath. It takes 7 tries before the ship finally splutters to life and you can depart the hanger. You fly out the hanger and head in the direction of the Police Station. As you near the station you notice that it is in much better condition than that of the space public space station as there is paint on some of the armor paneling which seemed to be a huge improvement compared the public station that had non, although that’s not really saying much. Once you arrive at the station you land the ship into the Public arrivals hanger. You collect your bags and go to leave the ship. As you try the panel that opens the door the panel make a sharp beep and displays and error message. About fed up this hunk of crap Simon gives it a good kick. A positive sounding beep goes of and the door finally opens. You walk out of the ship and into the hanger. You head over to the doors with the welcome sign about them and go into the Police station. As you walk in you notice that one of the walls is plastered with wanted posters ranging from petty theft to mass murder. You look around the room searching for the reception service desk. You notice it tucked away in the back corner of the room and slowly wonder over to it while looking around and taking in the sights of your new office. Half way there you notice that no one is sitting at the reception desk and turn back around to see if you can find someone to speak with. As there is no one else in the room other than Simon you decide to go through the staff only door that is to the right of the reception desk. As the head through the door a strong odor of coffee surges through your body as if you had just been hit by a wave. You turn the corner and see two fat men sleeping. One of the men are on the couch and the other one at a small round table. Simon steps forward and prods the highest-ranking of the two men on the shoulder. The man opens his eyes and lifts his head. After a couple of seconds he stands up and faces away from us. We stand there silent for a few seconds waiting for him to say something. Just as I’m about to go ahead and introduce myself he spins around with a huge grin on his face and shouts “Welcome to the Raak Police Station”.
