“Wow didn’t see that coming.” Aurora often made sarcastic comments on things like this but I couldn’t help but agree. “I mean I knew Mr. Williams was mean but dang.” I snickered
“Yeah but he could never get mad at me.” One of the girls that were cleaning by us glared.
“Well lucky you!” Hannah was one of Beckas friends. She was a pain yes but she would “never” physically hurt someone! Yeah, you no those shows that always end up having the most innocent character be the murder? That perfectly describes her.
“Shut up and clean! It’s not our fault you went to see that prank!” She huffed and went back to cleaning the desks. Half an hour later the bell rang and everyone got excited to leave almost standing under the clock begging it to turn twelve. They all rushed out and me and Aurora took our sweet time leaving the class. I looked out and Jack was down the hall getting swarmed by girls.
“Not gonna help him?”
“Do I have to?”
“Most likely.”
“Alright fine but this doesn’t mean anything!” I charged over and almost throwing a girl out of the way I grabbed Jacks hand and dragged him away. Some girls continued to follow and I threw him to Aurora and turned to the rest of the girls.
“Get lost!” Most ran away and then appeared Becka
“I don’t take orders from you! And you can’t just force him away like that!”
“And you should learn when people want to be left alone!”
“Take your own advice then.” She was so smug about it, it took me a moment to collect myself and think before pounding her head in.
“Yeah but I would hate to ruin that hideous makeup of yours. Honestly it matches yours soul as a bratty try hard!” I guess I won that battle because she stormed off. I turned to Jack still trying to control myself. “This means nothing. Got it!”
“Y- Yeah thank you….”
“Don’t mention it.” The day went by with little encounters since Jack was now under my protection. Ugh. I got home and Lily was in the dining room with a women.
“Hey welcome home! I’d like you to to meet Miss. Cole She’s our new neighbor.”
“Hi! I’ve heard so much about you! I actually have a son around your age he’ll be over soon!” She was nice enough but Cole was odd I knew I’ve heard it before. I ran up to my room and set my bag down and pretended to be a perfect angel while Lily and Miss. Cole talked.
“Excuse me Miss. Cole. Might I ask for your real name?”
“Clever girl. Well my real name is Grace.” I nodded
“Ok thank you.”
“You are really clever. And beautiful might I add. It’s a shame you don’t try to take advantage of your looks”
“Heh thank you, but I don’t really like to show off.”
“Why don’t you wear the dress your mother bought?” Lily asked I gave her a look and she stared at me pleading.
“Fine…” I got up and I could just hear Miss. Coles astonishment.
“Wait your not her mother?!”
“No.” I raced up stairs not wanting to hear about my parents. I wore the dress that was in a red shaded pink. I just heard a knock on our door and I headed down stairs. Come to find Jack in my dining room, and I guess I got slight amusement from him because when he saw me his jaw dropped. My dress was knee high skirt basically and slightly revealing. Jack looked away turning red.
“See, you look beautiful!” Lily nodded her agreement but I could mostly see how amused she was. “Oh yes this is my son Jack!”
“We’ve met…” I stepped closer to him just to make him more uncomfortable and let me say it worked well.
“Why don’t you and Jack go to your room.” Lily suggested I nodded and led the way up the stairs. I opened my door and went to the closet while Jack sat in the chair by my desk.
“Turn around I’m gonna change.” He nodded and obeyed I wouldn’t think he’s the peeping type but just in case I got under one of my bigger blankets.
“So now that we’re here will you tell me your name now?” I got the dress off and reach for the clothes I had out.
“In your dreams!”
“Then I’ll tell everyone I saw you in a dress!” I finished getting changed and laughed. “What so funny!” I hit the table to say I’m done and jumped onto my bed.
“Well one of two things could happen. Either the boys get jealous and pummel you or, no one believes you. Trust me even at school dances I never wear a dress.”
“Then why do you have one?” I was expecting that and sat up.
“Why do you even care!?”
“Because I’m curious?” I couldn’t go against that
“It was a present from my mom and that’s all I’m telling you.” We talked for awhile after that, we didn’t dive to deep in each other’s lives, so I was glad. But the more you get to know him then I guess he isn’t so bad, but there was something off about him. His mother for one was way to cheerful and Jack was slightly opposite most of the smiles he gave me while we talked were fake and it was easy to tell. After a while his mother came in and politely said they needed to leave. about time!
“Oh I just realized sweetie, I never got your name.” Miss. Coles voice quivered in shame and regret. It took a moment before Lily came up and kindly asked for them to leave. Jack hurried out and Miss. Cole followed unwillingly.
“Wow that was perfect timing Lily.” Lily stared at me knowing
“Well if she knew your name she has power over you and I don’t want that. For you and her.” I nodded and pulled out binders and books from my bag and laid them on the table.
“Why…” I looked at Lily pleading but she only shook her head and closed the door.
