Chapter 5: Bond Blocker (part 1)

Chapter 5: Bond Blocker (part 1)

Oct 03, 2019

It was Monday morning and after ignoring her mom's calls to get home several times and deleting her voice mails without listening to them, Bex finally got home late Sunday afternoon only to go straight to her room and lock her door so she could cuddle with Lyssa. In the morning her mom tried to talk to her but Bex ran out of the house fast to avoid the situation, now she was at school.

"It was fine," Bex assured Lyssa as they walked into the cafeteria together.

"It was awful just say it, just say Lyssa it was awful." Lyssa did her best Bex impression.

"It really wasn't. I mean sure it wasn't a ten on the food scale but it also wasn't a one! So yeah,"

"You hated it, just say it."

"I didn't hate it, here, look. This bland cafeteria food is like a three of the food scale. Your food was like a seven. It had flavors and dimensions. It was just average, nothing bad about being average. Take pride in knowing I would rather eat your cooking than this microwaved monstrosity." They sat at their table.

Lyssa sighed.

"Hey, come on. You just need to practice a little more. No one gets it right on their first try. Besides, soon enough I'll be having that four-course meal. And you'll share it with me." Bex grabbed Lyssa's hands in her own and squeezed.

"You really liked it?" Lyssa looked at her all vulnerable like.

It made Bex's heart skip a beat and her cheeks flush.

"Of course I did. I mean I ate it all, didn't I? Stop being so hard on yourself. It wasn't a failure. Promise."

"So, what are you two talking about?" Darci leaned forward.

Everyone at the table snickered.

"Lyssa is trying to learn how to cook for me." Bex smiled.

"Don't tell them!" Lyssa hissed.

"Aww, you two are so cute." Darci cooed.

"See Lyssa, Darci thinks it's cute. And it is. I am very proud of you." Bex kissed Lyssa on the cheek.

If Lyssa could flush red she would be. She turned away in her chair and huffed in embarrassment. Bex giggled and wrapped her arms around the vampire, forcing her closer. Then Bex rested her chin on Lyssa's shoulder.

"I love you," Bex whispered into Lyssa's ear.

"I love you too Rebecca." Lyssa couldn't help but smile.

Behind them, Joan was making silent gag sounds and movement. Mike and Jaden struggled not to laugh. Darci hit her with her purse. Joan snickered.

"Anyone do the homework this weekend?" Mike asked.

"The homework! Aw man, Lyssa, you distracted me! I didn't do any of it. My mom's right, you are a bad influence after all." Bex dug around in her backpack.

"Am I now?" Lyssa smirked as Bex pulled out her finished homework.

"What tha?"

"I did it while you were sleeping." Lyssa smiled.

"Lyssa, aw!" Bex engulfed her in a hug.

"Aw!" Darci cooed.

Joan groaned and rolled her eyes.

Lyssa smiled and looked at Joan, purposely mocking her by wrapping her arms around Bex. Joan glared at her. Lyssa stuck her tongue out. Mike and Jaden snickered.

"Stop it." Bex pulled away from Lyssa.

"What, I wasn't doing anything." Lyssa tried to act innocent.

"Oh, you don't fool me, you jerk." Bex pinched Lyssa in the stomach which made Lyssa laugh.

"Gosh you two are just so adorable, I can't. I am so your number one shipper." Darci smiled.

"Look at that Lyssa we have a number one shipper." Bex teased.

"Maybe we should start a fan club." Lyssa teased back.

Bex giggled.

"Speaking of fan club, either of you seen Monroe? I need to buy a Christmas tree from him." Joan said.

"Yeah we tried to go back last night but he still wasn't there. Plus he's not at school today either." Mike pointed out.

"So that's what was missing. I was wondering why I wasn't slightly annoyed as I usually am." Lyssa joked.

"We saw him Saturday at the movies being a jerk with his buddies as usual, but nope not after that." Bex shrugged.

"Well, his buddies are here, but not him." Jaden pointed out.

"Maybe he got sick. I heard there is a bug going around." Darci suggested.

"Either way, I need a Christmas tree stat before my mom chews my head off!" Joan exclaimed.

Bex giggled.

"We can go over to Rupert's after school if you want," Bex suggested.

Lyssa pouted. It was a Joan training day.

"Yeah he is local but that old man creeps me out." Joan shuddered.

"I heard he puts fish oil on all his trees to keep bad spirits away," Darci whispered as if it was some dark secret.

"What a creep." Joan sighed.

"I'll go with you." Bex poked Joan in the side.

"Alright fine, no way am I going to that creep's alone." Joan smiled.

Just then the bell rang for class and Lyssa took Bex's hand and as usual, walked her to her first class.

"See you later!" Bex called over her shoulder to her friends.

They also got up and walked to class.

At lunch, Lyssa tried to cook Bex a nice meal but she ended up under seasoning it and overcooking it, making it like bland rubber. Bex nicely suggested they get takeout instead and so Lyssa got her takeout instead.

After school Bex walked with Lyssa to Joan's house.

"I can train you just fine on my own." Lyssa huffed.

"Oh yeah, did we even get any training done yesterday?" Bex smirked at her.

Lyssa opened her mouth to defend herself but quickly deflated.

"Thought so, relax. You'll still be with me. In here." Bex pointed to her heart.

Lyssa smiled at her.

"See you tonight?" Bex asked.

"Of course my beautiful wonderful Rebecca. I shall come to your room and steal you away."

Bex giggled.

"Maybe not the stealing away part my mom would blow her top."

"Fine, but she will have to relinquish you one day to me. After all, you are mine to have, to hold, and to command when I please." Lyssa teased.

"Command me and I will be sure to hit you where it hurts Lyssa Norwood." Bex huffed.

"Not if I command otherwise." Lyssa playfully kissed Bex on the ear.

"We'll see about that." Bex playfully nudged her.

"I guess we shall." Lyssa giggled.

Just then they walked up to the driveway of Joan's house. Lyssa glared at it, as all the Slayers eyed her and stood outside doing various activities. Joan's brother was once again cleaning and sharpening weapons. Joan's dad was cutting wood. Joan's mom was inspecting her garden where she grew many things, but mostly onions. Joan herself was leaning against her brother's truck waiting for Bex.

"I hate this, I will never not hate this." Lyssa huffed.

"Relax. Look at me," Bex grabbed Lyssa's shoulders. "I love you." Bex smiled her signature smile.

Lyssa melted inside.

"Stay safe my love," Lyssa said before leaning in and kissing her.

Everyone in Joan's family scoffed at the sight.

Lyssa deepened the kiss just to spite them.

Bex giggled as Lyssa pulled away.

"See you tonight then." Lyssa backed away.

"I'll be waiting for you." Bex smiled.

"Then I will be sure not to make you wait long."

Bex rolled her eyes.

With one last parting smile Lyssa used her super speed and vanished.

"Come on, we got to go before the old croon closes." Joan pat the truck.

"Why does he close so early?" Bex complained as she walked over to the truck.

"Beats me, he's old I guess." She shrugged.

"Remember nothing taller than 7 feet, I mean it." Joan's mom called.

"Okay, I heard you the first 20 times," Joan complained as she got in the truck.

Bex giggled and got into the truck as well.

"Alright, let's get the show on the road." Bex turned up the radio and switched it to Christmas music.

"Noo! Ugh!" Joan complained as they pulled out.

"Sorry, you know I got to get my daily dose of Christmas music every day in December."

"How can you even listen to this garbage?"

"Because it's catchy, and it's not garbage." Bex wiggled in her seat as she danced to deck the halls.

"I hate you." Joan sighed as Deck the halls was already getting stuck in her head.

They drove to Rupert's Christmas tree shop and parked the car. A few other people were there looking at trees as well.

"Remember nothing over 7 feet." Bex mocked Joan as they got out of the car.

"That's it." Joan chased her as she tried to tickle her.

Bex screamed in laughter and ran away. She smacked into someone and fell down on her butt. She looked up and mean old Rupert was staring down at her. The old man was very wrinkly, with wispy white hair covering his mostly bald scalp. He had deep sunken in dark eyes and a scar that went from his left eye down to his cheek. Bex gulped.

"Sorry." Joan quickly helped Bex up.

"This ain't the place for child's games. This is the place to buy trees you don't want a tree then get!" he snapped at them.

Bex flinched.

"We do want a tree, sorry. Won't happen again." Joan quickly pulled Bex away.

"Yessh." Bex shuddered.

"Let's just hurry up and pick one." Joan scanned the trees.

"Ooo, that one." Bex pointed.

"Bex that tree is like 10 feet, no way are we going to fit it in my house."

"But I like it, look it, it has character." Bex touched one of the twisted branches.

Joan rolled her eyes and kept looking.

"Oh! What about this one!" Bex pointed.

"That's 8 feet." Joan once again sighed.

"But look, it's red!"

"If I got a red tree my mom would hang me alive. Stop messing around."

"Christmas tree shopping is supposed to be fun! You have to bond with the tree." Bex declared.

"Well stop bonding with these trees and help me." Joan playfully nudged her.

Bex giggled as she and Joan trekked further into the sea of trees.

"What about this wittle guy," Bex said in a baby voice as the approached a tiny three-foot tree.

"That's it!" Joan once again started chasing her.

Bex laughed and ran to the back.

She looked around for Joan but didn't see her. She smiled in triumph until Joan tackled her to the floor from behind and assaulted her with tickles.

"ahh! Okay!" Bex laughed.

Bex was pinned by Joan, Joan was laughing as well. Bex looked up and saw they were right under a mistletoe. Joan looked up and followed her line of sight.

"Hehe." Bex laughed nervously.

Joan blushed and quickly got off Bex, helping her to her feet. The two stood there awkwardly.

"Anyways, we should get back to tree bonding," Bex said.

Before she could move away Joan quickly kissed her. Bex yelped in surprise and quickly pulled away.

"Joan!"

"Sorry, I couldn't help it." Joan tried to play it off as a joke but her red face said otherwise.

"Do you want Lyssa to murder you?" Bex huffed her own face going red.

"It was just a joke, besides I'd like to see her try."

"Ugh!" Bex stomped off to look at trees.

Joan smiled behind her and did a little victory dance before casually walking off as if nothing happened.
