“Kadar may be reliable, but the information he brings may not be...” Dacia smiled, pushing a fat drunken man out of her way. “We need to mingle among the people in the market place, hear some of the tongues wagging about what’s been happening here. Be it gossip or goings-on.”
“We can’t just stop people in the streets and ask questions...” Iola stayed close behind Dacia as the mercenary cleared a path through the crowded tavern to reach the exit. “...that will draw attention to us.”
“That’s why we must get the people to gather in one place...” Dacia smiled, stepping out into the street. “And when people gather together, they talk.”
“How will we accomplish that?” Iola stumbled out after her.
“We put on a show.” The mercenary grinned, spreading her thickly muscled arms out wide.
“You must be jesting.” Iola furrowed her brow.
“I assure you, I am not.” The other woman looked around at the crowd on the busy street.
“What show can we possibly put…”
“I will throw my knives and daggers at a living target,” Dacia twirled a sharp pointed dagger in each hand. “...dazzling these simple city folk with my exemplary knife skills.”
“And what will I do?” Iola marvelled at her companion’s skill with her daggers.
“You, my sweet, will be my alluring assistant.”
“Doing what?” Iola narrowed her eyes.
“Being my living target.”
“What?” Iola’s gasp echoed eerily around her.
“You won’t be harmed.” Dacia had a very confident grin on her sun-tanned features.
“Now see here...” Iola’s pretty face reddened, “I will not have daggers hurled at...”
“Have no fear.” The larger woman laughed. “I know that you trust me.”
“How do you know that?”
“I know, little one, and so do you.” Dacia seemed to pick a spot in the market place and took a step toward it. “Now come.”
“But... I...” Iola’s feeble protest faded into the buzz of the lively bazaar around her.
