“Ah, there... in that clearing, just what we need.” Dacia pointed one of her daggers at a fruit seller’s stand. “You, kind sir, could we use, for a time, that wooden table on which you sell your fine fare.”
The elderly fruit seller gave Dacia a confused look.
“Fear not, you shall be well paid.” The mercenary held out one silver and two copper coins.
The man nodded, smiling happily, as Dacia tipped over the six-foot long table on its narrow side, making a perfect backing board for Iola to stand in front of.
She did as Dacia bid, feeling nervous and excited all at once.
“Gather around, people.” Dacia threw up her powerful arms and began yelling. “Gather around. For indeed you are all in luck as I, the greatest knife thrower in all of the land, will give you a show to regale your grandchildren with.”
It didn’t take long to have a decent crowd form a circle around them. Iola suddenly felt like she was trapped.
Closing her eyes, she took a few deep breaths to calm herself. A strange feeling overcame her. In her mind’s eye a warm and soothing wave of colours swathed over her.
It felt good, it relaxed her.
Suddenly she realized what that pleasant sensation was.
The thrill of anticipation and wonder from the people gathered around them. Somehow she seemed to tap into that.
She didn’t know how.
Maybe it was part of the special gift that she had. Nothing like this had ever happened until now.
She opened her eyes.
The crowd had grown larger, and so had the wave of colours swirling around inside her head.
“Behold.” Dacia waved at the gathering. “My lovely and courageous assistant stands before me, eager to test my skills. Let us have a cheer to salute her daring.”
