The next hour was spent trying to actually create something. By the end of class, we weren’t finished, but the assignment was completed for the most part. The teacher, when examining our work, nodded in approval. I scowled, knowing that most of the people in the groups were on their phones, leaving the smartest or most dedicated student to do all the work.
“Well, students! Since most of you are not finished with your assignments, I’ve decided that this will carry on into the day after tomorrow’s lesson,” the teacher announced.
I sighed. Now I have to work with them an extra day… Couldn’t he have just made it homework?!
“Yay!” Aspen cheered. “We get to hang out even more now!”
“I don’t understand why you’re so excited,” I commented.
“I mean, I get to hang around with you more now, which is always great,” she remarked. I gave a small sound of disinterest and disbelief. She inched closer. “It’s the truth,” she insisted.
“I don’t really care. I need to go,” I replied, standing up sharply.
“Wait! Can I come?” Aspen asked.
“It’s lunch.”
“I know. Can I sit with you?” she asked.
“I’m sitting with someone,” I said cooly.
“I know, but the more the merrier, right?” she joked.
“No, I’m good,” I answered, stone-faced.
I began to walk away.
“Why do you ignore me?” she asked, following me.
I ignored her for a second, reaching for the cafeteria doors and beginning to pull at them. Her hand settled on top of mine, but I ignored it and opened the door.
“Why do you insist so much?” I demanded back.
I stepped forward.
"Well, because I like you!" she exclaimed.
