The class started and he sat down on the far side of the field. Immediately there were kids near me, making me feel uncomfortable. I got chills, even though it was hot and my hands started sweating. I jerked inward quickly, then straightened out. Charlie shot me a concerned glance and I simply shook my head. The teacher led us outside to play soccer. I scowled as they teamed us up and my group glared at me.
“Hey, Kennith. You forgot to say bye earlier,” Jace said with a smirk.
“Bye,” I replied, waving.
“Don’t joke with me, fag,” he snarled.
“Oh? But I thought we were friends,” I responded, sounding hurt. "My feelings are so hurt."
“Why would I ever be friends with an idiot like you?” Jace hissed.
“Well, maybe because I’m such a fucking delight to be around? Or because Aspen actually pays attention to me? I don’t have to vy for her attention like a lost dog?” I retorted.
I let out a gasp of surprise laced with pain as he brought his fist to my nose. I almost doubled over, but managed to hold back. I glanced over at Charlie, who stared at me, wide-eyed. I made a ‘stand back’ motion with my hands. He glared at Jace, but stopped himself.
“Is your boyfriend gonna come save you?” he snarled.
“Don’t bring him into this,” I snapped.
“Really… How could you reject Aspen for some guy? stupid fag,” Jace scoffed. “As if you could do any better…”
“I rejected her for a reason, didn’t I?” I snapped. “If I don’t like someone, no one can force me. She’s okay, but not for me. She’s not my type.” This ticked him off even more. He brought back his fist. I raised an eyebrow and caught it with a scowl. “Just because I don’t hit you back doesn’t mean I can’t defend myself. You ought to keep that in mind.”
I felt my nose bleeding and wiped it away. Blinding pain came with it, causing me to recoil.
“Kennith! Did something happen?” Mrs. Curwen asked.
“It’s the weather. Can I go to the nurse’s real quick?” I requested.
“Yes, just hurry back,” she replied.
