Chapter 8: Slayer Class

Chapter 8: Slayer Class

Oct 17, 2019

Chaos. Complete chaos is how Bex would describe her current situation. One second she was telling Darci all about Lyssa and Vampires and whatnot the next Joan's parents called her back home due to an emergency. To her surprise, Mike and Jaden were waiting for them when they got there.

They looked like they had seen a ghost. Both sat on the curb outside Joan's house, Joan's brother rubbing their shoulders and standing guard over them. His eyes would glance around every few seconds.

Darci had declined to come along being as she had to meet up with Aron. Good thing too because what was about to happen shook Bex to her core. As soon as Joan pulled into the house she could tell something was wrong.

"What happened?" Joan ran over to her brother.

"You said you would handle it! You said that not knowing was better!" Jaden shot up and spat in her face.

"What's going on?" Bex asked.

"Monroe is dead!" Mike also shot up to face them.

"What!?" Bex and Joan said at the same time.

"We found him and his family, we just spent the last hour talking to the police."

"What are you saying?" Joan asked.

"It was them. Vampires." Joan's brother Ryland said.

Bex's eyes went wide, panic flooded into her veins.

'What! What is it? Are you okay?' Lyssa asked through their bond.

'Lyssa! I need you!' Bex sent back.

'I'm coming, where are you?'

"Joan's house, hurry!'

"You lied to us! They are going to kill us. We have to tell Darci, she's in danger!" Jaden cried.

Joan's dad and uncle came out just as Lyssa appeared next to Bex.

"What is it? are you okay?" Lyssa asked.

Bex engulfed her in a hug and whimpered into her.

"Barbie and Ken have struck close to home. Too close." Joan told Lyssa.

"Who?" Lyssa asked.

"They killed Monroe and his whole family!" Mike cried.

Lyssa felt sick to her stomach. It was clearly a message towards her. Monroe, it couldn't be a coincidence that the last he was seen was at the movies after talking to her. Which could only mean one thing, they were watching her.

Lyssa glanced around in caution.

"This is all your fault! Everything was okay until you showed up!" Jaden pushed Lyssa.

"Leave her alone!" Bex pushed him back.

"He's right though. You need to leave Vampire. They are after you, you endanger us all." Joan's dad said.

"I'm not going anywhere without my Rebecca," Lyssa growled.

Bex squeezed Lyssa's hand to reassure her.

"All you do is bring trouble!" Joan's uncle shouted.

"We should just kill her." Ryland spat.

"Because of you, Monroe is dead! You're going to get us all killed. Bex, you're not safe with her." Mike pulled Bex's arm and yanked her away from Lyssa.

"Everyone calm down!" Joan shouted but at the same time Jaden shouted over her, saying,

"Who's next, how do we know you didn't kill him!? So long as you are around we aren't safe!" He blocked Bex from Lyssa.

Lyssa's eye turned red and she puffed up her chest.

"Stop it! it's not her fault!" Bex tried to get to Lyssa but they held her back.

"We could end this all right now." Joan's dad growled.

"Just try it!" Lyssa hissed.

They pulled out their stakes. Lyssa hissed and bared her fangs getting into a defensive stance.

Joan groaned knowing she was going have to be the voice of reason, even though she would like nothing more than to kill Lyssa. She was happy her friends were finally seeing things her way. Still, Bex wasn't happy and that's what mattered most to her.

Jaden pushed Lyssa hard and she stumbled into the street. She grabbed him by the throat and picked him up. Her red eyes blazing with fury. Joan's uncle quickly went in to attack Lyssas but Bex jumped in the way.

"No!" she shouted and pulled on her necklace.

The sword disconnected from the chain and grew before their eyes into the long sword Lyssa had given her. She pointed it at Joan's uncle. He stopped short of impaling himself on it.

"Enough!" Joan called.

"Lyssa put him down," Bex ordered.

Lyssa growled and threw Jaden to the floor. He landed with a hard thud and grunted in pain. Bex backed up and stood next to Lyssa, her sword still pointed at the Vampire Slayers. It was her and Lyssa against everyone else.

"It's clear we aren't welcomed here anymore. So we'll leave." Bex said.

"No one is leaving. Stand down, all of you." Joan ordered.

"Them first!" Lyssa spat.

Joan looked at her dad. He clenched his jaw but lowered his stake, giving a look to Joan's uncle and his son with a grunt of protest they too lowered their weapons.

"Bex put that away before you hurt yourself." Joan sighed.

Bex glared at her but turned the handle in her hands and the sword shrank back to normal and she connected it to her necklace. Lyssa put her hands on Bex's shoulders, protectively and possessively. She eyed the slayers. Her eyes were still red.

Joan sighed and pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose.

"Okay, everyone just calm down. No one is slaying anyone unless it's Barbie and Ken. That was our deal." Joan eyed her family.

"Well deals off." Joan's brother spat.

"No, it's not. Arguing with each other and trying to kill each other isn't going to do anything but give Barbie and Ken the advantage over us. We have to work together to solve this problem. Obviously they are done hiding and them killing Monroe is a message to us. Meaning they are ready for round two. We aren't. I can't tell you that you aren't in danger, because you are. Killing Lyssa won't change that. Unfortunately." Joan muttered the last word and Bex glared at her.

"We can't just do nothing!" Jaden shouted.

"I know. Which is why I will train you guys to protect yourself."

"What about Darci!?"

"She's safer on her own. Her boyfriend is a warlock. He can protect her."

"You've got to be kidding me." he shook his head.

"Look do you want my help or not? As of right now, I am your commanding officer, you three are my students I will teach you everything I know. Now you can accept my help or else there is the road. But we are doing this my way. Lyssa stays, no one slays anyone, and we keep Darci out of this. Is that clear?" Joan eyed Jaden.

He shook his head and clenched his fist, his nostrils flared.

"We need to talk." Joan's dad said to her.

Joan nodded and followed her dad into the house, followed by her uncle and her brother. Bex, Lyssa, Jaden, and Mike stood outside. Mike was shivering and silent tears streamed down his face.

Lyssa sighed and let her eyes return to normal.

"You okay?" Bex turned to face her.

"Of course my love. Thanks to you, I knew that a sword was a smart choice."

"Don't push it." Bex eyed her.

"Are you going to be okay, I can feel your emotions of fear," Lyssa whispered low enough so Mike and Jaden wouldn't hear.

"It doesn't help that I can feel your fear." Bex sighed.

"I know, I am sorry. I just worry about you."

"We can get through this, together." Bex grabbed Lyssa's hands.

Lyssa took a deep breath and squeezed Bex's hands for reassurance.

"We can do anything together," Lyssa said.

Bex smiled at her.

Inside the house, Joan's dad was pacing the living room.

"Joan, I know we made a deal but even you must see the absurdity of this!" he said.

"I told you to let me handle it," she said calmly.

"I get that Bex is your friend, but that vampire puts us all in danger, she puts the whole town in danger. What if her pack come looking for her? Then what? Our numbers aren't what they used to be. With you no longer coming out on hunts with us and our new recruits not fit for battle yet. We aren't ready for something like that."

"I'm not a little girl anymore dad. I'm handling it. I told you, me not coming out on hunts is just temporary. I need Bex to think I've quit being a vampire slayer, just for now. Besides I like teaching, it's fun. The new recruits are developing well, they could even be ready by the time the new year rolls around. Killing Lyssa won't make the problem go away, trust me I want to kill her as much as you guys but it won't help. We need her. She's all we got right now. Killing her would be digging our own graves. Let me handle this my way. Do you trust me?"

"It's not that we don't trust you, Joan, it's that we don't trust her," Ryland said.

"Lyssa is on our side so long as Bex is on our side. But if you piss her off, like what you just did then yeah, of course, she's going to fight back. I can teach Mike and Jaden how to be a slayer, my methods are working on Bex. She's doing great, she might be even ready to go out in the field is she wanted. I got this, this is my problem, let me fix it."

Joan's uncle sighed and he looked at her Dad. The Dad looked at Ryland and all three of them sighed.

"Fine, but since you are going to doing some training classes anyways might as well call in the new recruits they need as many lessons as possible if they are going to be ready." Joan's dad said.

"Right, they could also help me go over the basics." She agreed.

"I hope you know what you are doing." Joan's uncle warned.

"I do." With that, she walked back outside.

"Well?" Jaden asked.

"We are going to the training gym, today will be your first Slayer class." Joan declared.

Bex sighed.

"I'm going as well." Lyssa declared.

Joan frowned but didn't fight her on it.

"Jaden, Mike, I'll drive you there, we have to pick up a few others on the way. Bex and Lyssa meet us there." Joan instructed.

They nodded in agreement.

With that, Lyssa scooped up Bex in her arms and the two vanished.

On her way Joan picked up three boys, all three of them were 12 years old. They were a part of the church community and enrolled in training to be a vampire slayer as soon as they could. They were still very green and had a lot to learn but they did know more than Mike and Jaden and that was a start.

"Okay, you three listen up. Inside is a Vampire." Joan said as they pulled up to the training gym.

"What! Do we have to slay it? is this a test?" Dean said.

"No! Do not, under any circumstances approach the vampire or slay her. She will kill you. This vampire is on our side. She's our ally, she is going to lead us to other vampires that we can slay. Do you understand?"

"Wait, since when was a vampire on our side?" Tyler asked.

"Since now, please just listen to me. I need you three to keep your cool if you can show me your ready I might even promote you to the next stage."

"So the vampire is a test." Will wiggled his eyebrows.

Joan pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Just listen to me. Stay away from the vampire, and do as your told. Got it?"

"Got it!" the three said in unison.

Joan sighed and led them to the gym, Mike and Jaden trailing behind her.

When they got inside Lyssa and Bex we already training with wooden swords.

"Outward Rebecca, like this." Lyssa jabbed the air with her wooden sword.

"Okay, okay, I got this," Bex complained.

"Go again," Lyssa instructed.

Joan stood and watched as Bex swung the wooden sword at Lyssa who blocked with her own sword and then went to grab Bex's arm. Bex twisted out of the grasp and flipped Lyssa to the ground before plunging the wooden sword downward. Lyssa rolled out of the way and went for a counter-attack their swords clanking together.

Dean was about to say something, but Joan held up her hand to silence him. She didn't want to break Bex's concentration.

Bex used her sword to smack Lyssa's away and then did a jabbing motion that poked Lyssa in the stomach.

"I did it!" Bex jumped up in excitement.

"Nice work my love." Lyssa smiled at her.

"See, told you I was getting the hang of this." Bex stuck her tongue out.

Lyssa smirked at her and kissed her, sucking Bex's tongue into her mouth.

The three boys gasped at the sight of a Vampire kissing a human, two girls for that matter.

"Gross." Dean made a face.

Lyssa pulled away and looked in their direction. She flashed her red eyes at the boys to scare them. Tyler hid behind Will. Lyssa smirked in satisfaction, Joan rolled her eyes while Bex swatted at her.

Lyssa giggled at Bex, who gave her a warning look. It was clear they were having a silent conversation.

"Alright, time for some real training. Everyone line up, we have a lot to go over." Joan said.

Lyssa grabbed the fake sword from Bex and went to put it away as Bex lined up with all the boys.

"Okay first everyone introduce yourselves, some of you are at different learning levels than others. So you are going to have to help each other out. Don't let age trick you into thinking you have more experience or less. Slayer class is in session and today I'm going to teach you how to repel a vampire with just your faith."

"Yes!" Dean hissed.

"Finally," Tyler said.

"Will we get to practice?" Will looked at Lyssa.

Joan smirked and looked at Lyssa.

"Don't even think about it." she hissed.

"But how will we know if we are making progress?" Joan asked.

Lyssa narrowed her eyes.

"Are we really calling it Slayer class?" Bex complained.

"I have to go pee," Mike interjected.

"How long will this take?" Jaden asked.

Joan sighed.

It was going to be a long night.

The fact that Joan's been waiting this while time to kill Lyssa despite the time they spent together makes me hate Joan.
