Kayla's POV
As soon I ended my on-call shift, I landed myself on the black chair nearby the waiting area, shutting my eyes; I am out of energy after those few cans of beer and the long hours in the emergency.
I should ignore work calls if I am ever drinking.
Damn, my conclusion might be incorrect, or if I ever get caught, I might get suspended - I can’t think anymore.
A few minutes or probably that feels like a decade, "Dr Lincoln, I am sorry to wake you, but someone on the ground floor specifically asked for you", one of the staff nurses, Jake said while poking his pen on my shoulder.
"Is it urgent?" I questioned him in a lifeless voice.
"I can bring him up here, is that okay?" he suggested.
"Yeah, bring him up here, if anyone questioned, says he is related to me, and I am aware of it. I don't want you to get in trouble." I waved him away lazily. (Who the hell look for me in the middle of the night! I want a peaceful nap, ugh!)
Derek's POV
A sudden realisation after I called Frank, I didn't even have her phone number. And noticing her scrubs, she would be working at St Ryle General Hospital. I see she didn't recognise the Ryle name. Silly Kayla, you never really changed that side of you. Right, I have to get that phone number. As I exited the apartment building, Bill smiled, he must've known.
"Sir," the young girl greeted me while assessing at what I was wearing.
"I am looking for one of your doctors, her name is Kayla Lincoln. Is she still on duty?" I inquired.
"Visitation hours are long over as it is 5 in the morning, I will suggest you head back and take a rest. The Doctor will be on duty during the visitation hours." the young girl answered.
"I see, but this is an emergency. And not to be rude, maybe you should.." my eyes drifted when a familiar mature woman came on to the counter.
"Oh, Mr Ryle, pleased to see you here." Deena, one of the older staff, greeted me.
"What are you saying, Samantha? He is the owner of this hospital." Deena replied in haste. The young girl, Samantha bowed her head and kept apologising.
"It's cool, don't worry about it. As I was saying, do you have Kayla Lincoln here?" I gazed Deena, and her eyes were no longer tired. "You mean? Her? She is on the top floor. Mr Ryle, are you sure?"
"Yes, I am Deena. No more excuses."
"I think she is asleep?" one of the nurses on duty named Jake came over and greeted me at the elevator. Jake's voice broke the silence in the ward.
"Yeah I can see that, where does she usually sleep?" I questioned Jake.
"I will show you the dorm, Sir." Jake ushered as I carried her in my arms. I noticed all the staff on duty pauses and stared at us. Right, this is unbelievable that someone owns this hospital carried a mere doctor.
"So, Jake, why is she asleep out in the cold?" I broke the silence this time as I could hear the staffs whispering and their staring got me uncomfortable.
"She just ended her shift, I felt bad calling her in knowing it was her birthday, but no doctor was available, Sir," Jake replied.
"Was it a need to have the 'Sir' I am not that old, you know?" I joke.
"Yes, it is. You are the owner of this hospital, and I didn't want to come off as rude." Jake lowered his head. "Don't worry about it, I am not my father, and you know very well, we are different. Derek is fine." I smiled at Jake.
And I could hear a relieved sigh from him.
Kayla's POV
I woke up with one of my arms, wrapping someone waist. Was I drinking with someone? No, I remember hearing a conversation before I drift to sleep. I lift my head, slowly to see who was it on my bunk bed; I didn't want to freak out. There was this awkward shift as I moved away all of a sudden.
"Goodmorning Dr Lincoln" He mumbles under his breath. Damn, that voice is so intimate and husky sexy, and he smells like vanilla and sunshine. Call me, Doctor again, and I will kiss your face. Damn it, Inner Goddess.
He freed his arm under my shoulder and perched up slowly, rubbing his eyes with his long-skinny-like fingers before turning towards me, "I am Derek, I met you yesterday on the rooftop, remember?" He grazed his eyes again and squinted his eyes at me before he continues.
"I didn't punch in your number, so I got back here to ask for your number. I noticed your scrub and kind of figured where you worked," Derek replied before letting out a yawn.
I sat up and look for my spectacles which were my bedside, surprisingly. Usually, I would chuck them on the floor, which I regret the next morning by feeling the ground for them.
Derek's face becomes vivid, and my inner goddess was squealing. Hot damn.
I think he was looking at me to reply, "And of course, I didn't mean to sleep here, but you didn't let me go."
Gosh, his faint smile was making him even sexier now.
I do have a thing for a bad boy persona but, not in a million years; someone like him in my room. I gave out an awkward smile and cleared my throat repeatedly as silence falls between us.
"I am sorry, Derek" I apologise. He let out a chuckled and moves out of my bed quickly and lifted his black coat off my floor.
"So, this is where you sleep when you are not working? Must be terrible to stay here," he said with a pout while his eyes scan around the room: the room filled with two metal bunk bed, dark wooden bookshelves full of medical books, a small round coffee table that has dirty laundry piling up one another. "I like it here, makes it easier when someone calls me," I replied while wiping off specks on my spectacles with my blanket "Don't mind the mess, I haven't been able to do laundry."
His fingers run through his hair, how can a good looking man be standing here in my messy room and what worse, slept with me on my bed the whole night? My cheeks crimsoned, and I assume he noticed my cheeks redden. You see, I am fair like snow white, I get bruised if any part of me gets bumped by something, plus whenever I blushed, my entire face will be pink-red. So, I think he knows I was blushing, He clears his throat and awkwardly looks at me,
"Well, will you be free for breakfast?" He turned around and wore his coat swiftly.
"Yeah, sure, breakfast. But if you need the bathroom, turn right, and you will be able to see one" My eyes widen; I blurted out. Kayla, get your shit together. My inner goddess scream. I shook my head and breathed in and out to ease my wrecking nerves.
"Thanks, I will see you outside, Kayla." Derek closes the door after him and I let out a laugh, the world is definitely mocking me.
