"Come now little bird, we're almost there." She walked with him over to a oak door inset on a stone building and pushed it open with a light jingle of a bell as the door passed the threshold. The strong smell of breads baking and meats cooking assailed Alex's senses and suddenly it all reminded him of how long it had been since he ate last. His stomach growled in abject longing from the pleasing smells. She pointed to a table near the wall away from the door, one where both of them could watch the door. She clearly knew some of his personal issues with places he wasn’t familiar with and he chalked it up to both of them having been career soldiers. Gilly absently waved him away calling out to him as she walked to the bar. "Go sit, I will be right there, I need to speak with the staff for a moment." He moved to the table looking back at her as he went. It was then that he saw and took note of the woman behind the bar. She was smiling ear to ear and clearly very happy to see Gilly in her business. She leaned in and spoke in low, hushed tones so as not to let Alex hear a word of it. Gilly responded back in kind. Alex felt it wasn't his place to pry and instead turned his attention to the remainder of the establishment. There were only a few people in the place and it seemed as if it was likely the down time for the store.
This was likely orchestrated by Gilly, delaying the trip to ensure there would be less people around. Soon Gilly walked over to the table and sat next to Alex scooting her chair a bit closer to him with a pleasant smile on her face still. "Go on, I'm sure you've got some questions."
Alex looked at her and her peculiar actions. "A few, yes. One thing I'd like to know is what’s with the sudden change in your demeanor? When I met you, you were more than eager to establish that you clearly were not to be taken lightly. Today, I wake up in your admittedly wonderful home, and am brought though the streets of a beautiful city, and the entire time you're all smile's and sunshine. I'm not objecting mind you, I'd rather not keep getting my ass handed to me. To be frank, you're an enigma to me, and while that should be wholly upsetting to me I cannot help but find myself enamored. So please for the sake of my mind at least explain to me that."
Gilly looked thoughtful then cooed at him gently. "Alex, let me be clear with you. I like you, ever since I was told to watch after you and I saw you doing what you do. You're a man with honor and you do the job even if it is dirty. You have no idea how long I've had my eyes on you. You're in my homeland now, you are not a prisoner and you showed me that you really have some admirable traits beyond those pretty tattoos of yours." She said with a mischievous look in her eyes. "I will say though, you are right, if I wanted to I could snuff out your life like so many little candles. You have no idea how appealing that idea was to me when I first started watching you, but as I said I was told to keep you close and to watch."
The fact that this woman had just stated that she could end him so easily and casually sent a chill down his spine which quickly abated as he picked up on something key. "You were told to watch me? Who would tell you that?"
She laughed at him lightly. "You'll learn in time, but for what I can say you might think of it as Divine Will" as she was saying that food was being delivered to the table along with glass mugs of what looked like wine. "For now just enjoy your food." She took up a small loaf of bread and tore off a bit holding it out to him as if she was attempting to feed it to him. He looked at her and went along with it eating the small piece of food, it seemed to melt in his mouth and he'd never quite tasted anything like it before. He chalked it up to his having not eaten in quite a few days. He looked to Gilly who still had that sly smile on her face. "Eat up little bird. The wine is a specialty from here, it’s a spiced wine and it is absolutely the best you will have ever had." She said this with a measure of pride, she seemed very happy for her homelands accomplishments even in the smaller areas.
Alex felt his worries and stresses begin to melt away as the two ate and chatted idly, about a lot of topics, everything from the mundane and practical to the theoretical and fantastic. It was only once all the food was gone that he realized quite a bit of time had passed and people were starting to funnel into the establishment. Gilly placed a few coins onto the table and stood up taking Alex by the hand and leading him out of the building. It was somewhat abrupt and Alex could only partly notice all the eyes on the pair as they were on the way out. He felt light headed as the wine he was given was likely far stronger than it tasted and he was full. For the first time in many years Alex felt content. He had a good time with a woman that up until tonight was incredibly intimidating to him. Today she showed a lighter side to herself and clearly was able to get him to relax, which was a feeling he was unfamiliar with.
They walked together in a comfortable silence, Alex looking up to the night sky as they walked along the neat and orderly streets. The moon was unnaturally large and bright hanging in the sky and the breeze was still steady. Everything was warm and for a moment Alex felt himself wishing the night to never end. It was purely a thought of a person who was finally able to let go of some of the problems he held so close even if only for a few short moments. The soft voice of Gilly broke him from his thoughts as they stopped at the gate to her home. "Come on now little bird, you need your rest and we have a lot to do tomorrow. You'll have many of the answers you want then, for now we sleep." The gate was opened and she took his hand leading him inside her home once more.
