Faisal reached into his belt pouch, fished out a coin of silver and tossed it into the eager hands of the informant. Then without another word, he strode briskly away from the shadowed street.

The Eastern Stronghold, Faisal’s brow furrowed anew, that’s where the prisoner from the Clans was being held. Did she intend to break him out? And how did she plan to do that?

His mind clouded, Faisal turned a corner and slammed into something large and hard. He stumbled backward and almost fell when he felt a powerful grip close over his wrist, holding him upright.

“Captain.” A deep voice yet soft spoke. “My apologies. I did not see you...”

“No, no...” Faisal caught his breath and peered at the taller man in the uniform of the City Watch, he did not recognise him. “My fault entirely... are you a new recruit?”

“Indeed, I am, Captain.” The handsome young man smiled. “It is my second week on the job.”

“And your name is?”

“Nesmir.” He grinned. “Nesmir Henan Kahn.”

“Ah, good man. “Faisal nodded. “Are you on duty?”

“I... it was my night off... but I have gate duty...”

“Lost your night off in a game of dice?” Faisal smiled knowingly.

The younger man nodded sheepishly.

“Well, carry on.” He waved the guardsman away. “And pray that you are better at your duties than you are at dice.”

That strapping lad could have a bright future in Siduscan Law Enforcement, Faisal mused as he walked briskly away, but he did not linger on that thought.

There was important information that needed to be delivered, and Siduscan Law Enforcement was the last thing on his mind.
