DESTINY BECKONS

SIXTEEN

SIXTEEN

Iola nodded slowly as she sat up.

She wasn’t eager to let Dacia know that she discovered some of those secrets in a way she herself didn’t quite know how.

Her special abilities were still new to her and letting anyone else know of them wouldn’t be wise.

She silently walked up to the window and washed her face in the basin beside it.

The water in the pitcher was cool and refreshing, invigorating her and reminding her that she hadn’t eaten since arriving.

She followed her taller companion down the stairs and to the table set for them.

Roasted quail, boiled potatoes and greens, and thick slices of fresh baked bread greeted them.

A pot of sweetened milk for her and a whole pitcher of the sour smelling ale for Dacia accompanied the meal.

They were halfway through their repast when a large shadow fell across their table. Iola jerked her head up, her green eyes wide.

Kadar gave her a broad grin and sat himself down, reaching for Dacia’s ale pitcher.

“What news have you?” Dacia asked the man unperturbed.

The unkempt man took a long swig of the ale, wiped his mouth on the back of his large hand and sighed. “The one you seek is being held in the eastern stronghold. I will swap duties with a guard I know there and help you get him out.”

“When can we do this?” Iola sat up straight, losing all interest in her meal.

“You must leave tomorrow at first light...” The burly guardsman replied as he picked up a large piece of roast quail. “...it is a half day walk from here to the eastern part of the city.”

“And you will release my grandfather to us once we get there?”
