Humanity Evolving

Under the Philcade

Under the Philcade

Oct 31, 2019

There is a story, by now long forgotten, that in 1929 the tunnels of Tulsa became more than tunnels. A secret was buried there, one that was extremely lethal. Some believed it was a gift from the Gods, others a creation of the Devil. Nobody knew where the box came from, other than that it was beautiful, and alien. It became an extremely expensive item in the rich auctions. Old money, new money, and highly esteemed scientists all fought for it. The box had a long genealogy of owners, since it killed so many. A curse went with it wherever it went. Some were smart, and never got close to the actual box, sending a servant to put it in a room where they could admire its beauty at a safe distance. Others believed the tales to be a superstitious rumors to keep people from wanting to steal it.

Nobody new until way later that the reason for the curse was because the box emitted an extremely strange and deadly radiation around it. When people came within three feet of the box, they were to be found dead two days later. When outside of those three feet, a person would be fine. Of course, scientists tried to open the box using strange and unusual methods to open it without getting within it's radiation field, but the box would not open, and in some cases, the radiation field expanded, killing the scientists. It was almost as if the box had a mind of it's own, using the radiation field to protect itself. After so many attempts and so many dead, they decided there was one way to make sure the box never harmed another person again, or in enemy hands.

While Construction workers built the tunnels, they also dug a deep, deep whole in the tunnel floor, exactly between the Philtower and Philcade. The box was dropped into the hole, which totaled over 200 feet, and then sealed it up with concrete. Only a few construction workers knew of the box's existence and location, though they did not live past two days nor did the scientists who hid it.

Moira Emry's biggest problems in life were only ever passing her classes, friends, boys, and the ever persisting problem of finding herself. She had just started her freshman year of college at the University of Tulsa, and while she could stand to focus more on her Pre-Calc homework, things were going well. Until one day she hears a ringing in her ears that won't go away, that is so painful, and is joined by a message telling her to come to it. What she discovers will not only change her own world, but the worlds of both her planet and another.
