“Not so easy, little one.” Dacia laughed. “He will help us, but not at the cost of his own neck on the headman’s block. The plan is for me to get into the dungeon and bring your grandfather out... like a break out, with some discreet help from Kadar.”

“How are you going to get in there?” Iola stared at Dacia with some astonishment.

“She will have to get herself arrested.” Kadar offered with a casual air.

“What?” Iola almost fell off her chair. “That is insane.”

“Yes, so it is. And that’s why it will work.” Dacia nodded, leaning back on her chair.

“But how will you get...”

“There are many ways to get arrested.” Kadar cocked his shaggy head. “Starting a fight in the street outside the stronghold is one.”

“That’s just what I will be doing.” Dacia grinned and took a swig of her ale.

“And I will see you inside the dungeon at nightfall.” The guardsman nodded and rose to leave. “Fare well.”

Iola gave her companion a troubled look as the guardsman walked away. “The information Kadar brings, does it agree with what you heard from the people this afternoon.”

“Indeed, it does.” The mercenary replied. “There are quite a few who had similar accounts to tell. Your grandfather is in a cell in the eastern stronghold dungeon.”

Iola looked away, her eyes brimming with tears.

She couldn’t bear the thought of her beloved grandfather being thrown into a dank, dirty dungeon like some criminal lowlife.

Every fibre of her being screamed to make the city of Sidusca pay for this.

“Come, let’s get a few more hours of sleep.” Dacia stood up. “We leave at first light.”
