Iola couldn’t see who it was, but she was sure it had to be the City Watch.
Her heart hammered against her chest as she saw Dacia place her hands behind her head and get down on one knee.
Two helmeted burly men in black armour and red cloaks appeared on either side of the mercenary and dragged her away, out of Iola’s line of sight.
The nineteen year old clanswoman felt distraught.
What if they took the mercenary to some other place instead of the stronghold?
What if they just drove her out of the city? Without Dacia she knew she could do nothing and her grandfather’s fate would be sealed.
She took a deep breath and calmed herself, closing her eyes and letting her thoughts cease.
And just as it had happened in the market place the afternoon before, swirls of colours, dim and overlapping, began forming in her mind.
The colours grew bolder and started taking shape. She could hear faint voices inside her head too.
The voices had to be of all the people around her and out on the street. It seemed she could sense other people’s emotions and hear their thoughts.
She didn’t know how. Yet everything was chaotic and all at once.
Iola eased her mind and tried to focus. If this was part of her gift, she would learn how to control it and use it to her advantage.
Maybe she could focus hard enough to isolate one or two people at a time.
Dacia’s would be the best mind to set her focus to. She inhaled deeply and concentrated on the mercenary.
She felt a series of jolts and shivers all through her body as her focus grew stronger.
The swirling colours began to take more solid forms and coalesce into shapes she could recognize.
Yes. Solid objects, like the ground, the walls, furnishings and drapery.
