Idol Love

Did I Really Win?

Did I Really Win?

Nov 01, 2019

I smile at the customer in front of me, handing her the coffee. “Have a good day.”

She quickly thanks me and takes it before rushing out of the cafe. The October air rushes in. How could it be so cold already?

“Morgan!” Kim, my best friend and boss, gasps. “They came out with a new video!”

Rushing around the counter, I lean over Kim as she hits the play button. Our favorite idol group Wish is finally coming to our city. Has it already been two years since they’ve debuted? This is their first world tour and everyone is losing their minds, including me. Being a Korean band, we’ve been waiting forever for them to make their American appearance. I’ve been dying to go ever since the tickets went up for sale. Sadly, they sold out immediately. I could still hear Kim cussing at the venue clerks, demanding to know how in the hell people could buy out tickets so quickly. To be fair, we had stayed up all night waiting for the queue to open. Seeing the seven band members joking around on screen made me grin.

“Look at Jay!” She reaches over and begins to repeatedly slap my shoulder. His blue jeans and black t-shirt show off his slender figure and blonde hair. The camera pans out, highlighting the other members as they come on the screen. DaeDae smiles while Dragon and Sunshine raise their hands into a heart. Hajoon gives the camera a kiss and Jun just smiles sweetly. Kang runs up to the camera and begins kissing the lens before he’s dragged back by the other members. Jay presses his black glasses higher on his nose and gives the camera a wink.

“Thank you for having us tonight,” he replies in perfect English. His accent makes me grin.

“No, thank you.” Kim sighs. “How can they be so cute?”

“It’s their charm.” I could feel my phone vibrating in my pocket. I look at the caller ID and poke Kim in the head. “I’ll be right back.”

She doesn’t spare me a glance, eyes never leaving the screen. “I’ll let you know everything they do.”

I chuckle. Of course she would. I make my way to the back, closing the door to the tiny storage room behind me. I hit the call button and bring the phone to my ears, taking in the sounds of soft music that’s playing in the background.

“Hey, Mom.” She usually calls once a week to check in on me.

“Hey, darling. How’s it going?” Her soft whimsical voice relaxes the aches in my shoulders.

Leaning against a shelf, I shrug. “Work’s been good.”

“Kim’s been taking care of you?”

“I like to think of it more as I’ve been taking care of her.” Running a hand through my dark brown hair, I clear my throat. “How are things at home?”

It’s silent for a few heartbeats, then, “I’ve been fine. We just started a new book in the book club. Your father though … he has this notion that he can become a politician within the next couple of years if he keeps playing his cards right. He already owns a company. Now he’s trying to take over the world.” I could hear the forced playful tone in her voice. She knows how awkward it is to talk about Dad with me. It wasn’t that Dad and I didn’t get along. We were cordial with each other. We just couldn’t seem to see eye to eye on things anymore.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come home? We can make a home on the property for you. You’d still have your own space.”

“I think you and I know that Dad would object to that.” A smile forms on my face.

“He can kiss my ass.” Her voice turns into a growl.

I couldn’t stop the laugh that broke from my chest. “I love you. I enjoy it over here. The beach house is perfect for my morning outings.”

She sighs loudly. “I’m just glad you’re happy. That’s all that matters. But if anything ever goes wrong, you come straight home.”

“I know, Mom.”

“I love you, darling. Keep in touch more. Tell Kim hi for me.”

The music stops and I know my Dad has entered the house. “Alright. Speak to you later.”

I hang up the phone and shove it back into my pocket. Slowly, I make my way back to the counter where four girls are lingering. Kim is behind the counter making drinks. She is only a couple of years older than me, but I have never met a more career driven person before. She lives and breathes this coffee shop.

“Hi,” a girl calls out softly.

I turn to her and give her a grin. “How are you ladies today?”

“Good.” They echo with giggles.

Kim lays the four drinks out and begins to relay the orders. “Two Americanos, a fancy Caramel Macchiato, and a latte. You girls have a good day.”

They begin to pick up their drinks. “Thanks.” The one girl who spoke to me lingers around before one of her friends grabs her arm. “Millie, let’s go.”

We watch them file out of the cafe before Kim shoulder bumps me. “You bring in such amazing business.”

“How so?’

“You’re hot.” She snorts. “Maybe I should keep you around and pimp you out to the ladies for tips or something.”

I turn to her. “That’s illegal. I think we can say that women are off the table for both of us. Now, if you start bringing in guys …” I reply while rolling my eyes.

Her gaze moves to the wall speakers, a familiar song playing on the radio station. We’ve been lucky enough for them to play Wish’s songs here. “Too bad we can’t get them.”

“God, the day any of the Wish members come out as gay will be the day I die of pure bliss,” I remark before I begin refilling the coffee grinder.

Kim presses a hand to her heart. “We can only dream, right?”

“But you would be at a disadvantage,” I remind her.

She throws her towel at me. “Get to work, slave, before I dock your pay.”

“Yes, mistress.”

“Good news to anyone who still hasn’t gotten tickets for the Wish concert. Lucky caller number seven will get an all exclusive backstage pass and front row seat to this weekend's concert.” The radio station drones on in the background.

I shoot a look at Kim. She reaches for her notepad, writing down the number as quickly as she can before pausing.

“Should we?”

“We’re not going to win,” I reply softly.

She dials the number and holds it to her ear. “Let’s try.”

“Kim …” I sigh. I have bad luck with these things.

“I bet you thirty bucks that you won't get it."

Thirty bucks? I snort. Kim grabs my phone and dials the number. Busy signal.

"I want the day off if I do get it."

"As long as you give me pics of them shirtless when you go backstage." She holds her hand out. I stare at it for a moment.

With a nod, I shake it. "Deal."

For the next two minutes, we continue dialing. Frustration grows inside me every time the busy signal buzzes in my ear.

In the background I can hear Kim cursing under her breath. I hit the call button once more. I couldn't hear the busy signal. I pull the phone away just as it begins ringing. No way.

"We’ve got a lucky winner!" The radio DJ cackles on the other end of the line. "Who is this?"

Holy ... "Morgan. Morgan Wilder," I stutter.

"Bullshit," Kim hisses before she's leaping towards me, pressing her head against mine to listen in on the conversation.

"Well, Morgan, this is your lucky day. This weekend you will be seeing Wish live in concert and meeting them. How excited are you?"

I could hear the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears. "I think I'm going to be sick," I admit. Was I honestly going to see them in concert? Did I really just win? I could hear the radio DJs laughing at me and teasing me about being a fanboy. I mean, they weren't wrong. I am among the few who actually enjoy the kpop life. After giving them my information, I hang up the phone and turn to Kim, who's staring at me, clearly just as shocked as I am.

"Holy shit," she breathes. "You won."

I nod slowly. She begins spinning around, screeching as she claps her hands together like a hyperactive seal.

"I'll take that day off now," I reply breathlessly before sitting on the counter.

"We're going shopping. I can't believe this. You are completely living my dream right now." She grabs a blank sheet of paper and a marker then turns to write something out. Kim throws her apron onto the counter and grabs my arm.

"Now?"

Kim grins. "Yep."

"But ..." I look around the empty shop. "What about work?"

Her hands go to my back and she begins pushing me towards the door. Kim tapes up a “Be back in 30 minutes” sign. "The one thing you're going to learn is that I'm the boss and I get to make my own hours. I'll come back later and reopen it. This is more important. You need to make a good impression." The chilly October air brushes against my skin.

Her phone rings and I hear her groaning as I'm thrust outside onto the sidewalk. She's locking the door while answering the phone one-handed.

"What's up?"

Someone begins talking quickly on the other end. Kim rolls her eyes. "I don't think telling the judge you were premeditating murder is the right thing to do. Just go outside and breathe and come back inside with a fresh mind. I'm not bailing you out of jail."

Ayden? I mouth to her. She nods once before flattening her lips.

"Look, I love you, and I told you the only advice I know. Yeah, yeah." She hangs up the phone and wraps her arm through mine. "Brothers. You’re so lucky you're an only child."

"I think my Dad knew that I would be a handful so he just decided not to have any more."

"Your dad is a piece of work," she growls as we walk down the sidewalk. "I mean, I get he's not really objecting to the whole gay thing, but to tell you to not embarrass the family and get into a scandal is such a douche thing to say."

I shrug. "Oh well. My only job in life is to make sure I'm not a disappointment."

"You're not! I've known you for five years, Morgan Wilder, and you are pretty much perfect. If you were straight I might have given you a second look, but let's be honest here, DaeDae is more my type."

I laugh. "DaeDae is too young for you."

"Age is but a number, sweetheart. You really need to understand that."

Tall, muscular and good at basically anything, he draws anybody in with just a look. I can see why women like him.

"I would have thought Dragon would be your speed."

Kim melts. "That man spits fire when he's angry." She presses a hand to heart, groaning. "I just love them all. I need you to take pics and have fun for me, too. I'm so happy for you."

"Then shouldn't we go ahead and get shopping?"

"I swear, by the time I'm done with you, you're going to be turning someone's head. Mark my words. This is going to be one hell of a concert. I’m so excited!"
