Kai had planned on sleeping in, but his doorbell had other ideas.
He yanked off his sheets as it rang for the fifth time in a row.
“Give me a minute!” He yelled, jogging down the stairs.
He was about to open the door when he remembered he was shirtless.
“One second!” He yelled again at the incessant knocking and ringing, hoping to at least get the person to stop while he went to put on a shirt.
“Kai, you're right there, I can hear your voice right behind the door! Open it for crying out loud!” Danny yelled through the door.
Danny winced. He hadn’t meant to yell, he really hadn’t.
This was meant to be a nice gesture, but he’d been waiting for almost five minutes!
Kai stopped, eyebrows scrunching at the unexpected voice.
He turned back to the door and swung it open. “Hi,” he said, then promptly turned around and headed to the stairs.
Shirtless. Tattoos. Chest. Danny blinked.
“Hi?" He eventually said, after getting over the initial shock of seeing Kai shirtless.
Who answered the door shirtless?
Crazy people, that's who.
And— a part of Danny's mind couldn't help but add— people who know they look really good shirtless.
Danny shook himself out of it. “I've been out here for five minutes and that’s all you have? Hi, and then you leave?”
“Well don’t just stand out there,” Kai said, already halfway up the stairs, glancing back at Danny, “come in. What are you doing here?”
“Wow,” Danny said as he cautiously stepped into Kai’s house. “Did you teach Elena those manners at camp?” He said as he slowly walked around the living room, looking at the few photos on the walls.
“And did you teach Elena to show up unannounced at people’s houses? Wake them up with non-stop ringing and knocking?” Kai said, disappearing into one of the upstairs bedrooms.
He promptly came back out, shirt in hand, as he walked to the railing and glared down at Danny.
He pointed at his watch, “at SIX in the morning!”
“It’s 6:58, actually.” Danny helpfully corrected.
He watched as Kai walked down the stairs and put on his shirt at the same time. He was tempted to tell him to be careful and watch where he was going.
“And, besides,” Danny said once Kai reached the last step, shirt successfully on, “Didn't you tell me yesterday you're usually up before the sun? Nothing like a 5am run, your words, which I still feel very strongly against. I thought you’d be up by now!"
Kai opened his mouth in protest, but before he could say anything Danny continued.
“And since I drove you home yesterday," Danny said, "I realized that meant you’d be car-less today, so," he placed his hands on his chest, "I found it in my big, kind, warm, heart to pick you up before work to go get it.”
Kai stared at him cautiously. “Really?"
Danny nodded, as if it should have been obvious.
Kai grinned wide. "Wow, mahalo Danno, that's actually really nice.”
Danny made a face.
“Really? Danno?" He said flatly, "What did I tell you about calling me that? Here I am trying to do a nice gesture and-" he stopped when he noticed Kai's grin just kept getting bigger.
He had a growing feeling that Kai enjoyed riling him up.
He stared at him in contempt for a moment. Kai simply grinned wider in response.
“So," Danny said, breaking first, "you wanna go get your car or what?”
Kai grabbed his keys off the coffee table and walked out his front door in reply, leaving Danny standing alone in the living room.
"What, are you gonna take my car and leave me?" Danny called after him. "Where are you going— Wait for me!”
He quickly walked after Kai.
"You're not gonna lock it?" He asked, stopping at the front door.
Kai was already waiting by the car. "No."
"You don't lock your front door?"
"No."
"That's not safe."
Kai shrugged, then pulled on Danny's car door, telling Danny to get a move on.
Danny closed the front door, giving it one last glance before walking to his car.
"So you mean to tell me, I could have just walked into your house?" He asked as he slid into the driver's seat.
Kai nodded as he slid into the passenger seat.
Danny blinked, unable to wrap his head around Kai’s nonchalance over it. "That's not safe." He repeated.
Kai sighed. "Are we going or not Danny?"
