They drove in silence for a few minutes before Danny spoke up.
“You hungry?” He asked, glancing at Kai. "We did say I would pay next time right? Do you want some breakfast?”
He felt bad for waking Kai up, he really had thought Kai would’ve been awake already, gone on his run, and had his hearty breakfast.
Kai eyed Danny for a moment then straightened in his seat. “Uh, yeah I could use a bite to eat.”
“Great." Danny glanced at the time, 7:15 am. "What’s open?”
They were still halfway to Kaleo’s diner, where they had eaten the day before, but it only served lunch and dinner.
Kai thought for a moment, then said, “Pull over."
“Pull over?" Danny's face scrunched. "What do you mean pull over? There's no restaurants around." He motioned at the trees lining both sides of the road. "Why would I pull over?”
“Just— pull over." Kai insisted, "I know where to go.”
“And we're going to get there how?" Danny asked, narrowing his eyes. "Do you have a flying broomstick I should know about?"
Kai opened his mouth but Danny continued.
"Or," Danny said as he kept driving, "do you expect us to abandon my car here and hike into the jungle? Catch and gut a wild boar or something? Cause I can tell you right now, that'll be a hard no from me."
Kai rolled his eyes, a grin appearing on his face.
"I hate hiking," Danny continued. "And we could get salmonella or something. And this car may look like an old piece of junk, but it's a rental, so I'm not just gonna abandon it on the side of the road!"
Kai had only known Danny for a day and a half, but he was already getting used to the guy's rants. He found them amusing and almost kind of... endearing.
“Pull over, so I can drive,” Kai explained slowly.
“You?" Danny's eyebrows shot up. "You wanna drive my car? No." He said, shaking his head.
“You just said it was a rental.” Kai countered. “Look, you moved here like three weeks ago, right? I know these streets better. Just pull over.”
Danny looked at Kai like he was an idiot. "That’s what GPS is for! Or just tell me when to turn! Which, by the way, seems like I won't need to for a bit!" He pointed at the road in front of them, winding, but straight ahead as far as the eye could see.
“It’s just easier if I drive.”
“Easier if you drive?" Danny repeated, making a face.
Kai gave a firm and serious nod.
"Wow," Danny grinned sardonically, "What, you don’t like my driving? You don’t think I can handle taking directions?”
“No Danno,” Kai tried explaining as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "And I thought I was a morning person? How do you have so much energy right now? I’m just saying-”
“I’ll pull you over,” Danny grumbled, interrupting Kai.
“That-" Kai couldn't help the smirk that appeared on his face again. "That doesn’t even make sense. You’re hungry. Pullover so I can take us to eat.”
“There is no way," Danny said passionately, "that I’m letting you drive my car anywhere!”
“Are we there yet?” Danny asked from the passenger seat.
Kai grinned as he slowed the car to a stop, “yup!”
Danny looked around, it looked like a park, with the ocean a few yards away, the sand slowly transitioning to a grassy field. There were people in their swimsuits playing volleyball, some having picnics, some looked like they were taking a hula class.
“Um… Kalani, don’t you think there’s something missing? Like… a restaurant maybe?”
“Alohilani’s food truck,” Kai said, pointing to a truck on the far side of the field, “there's usually more people later on in the day, see the picnic tables in front? That’s the seating. He’s got really great food, sells just about everything.”
Then he got out of the car, leaving Danny to scramble after him.
"Do you know what you want?" Kai asked as they got closer to the front of the line.
"Uh," Danny said squinting his eyes at the menu posted on the side of the truck, he wasn't sure what a lot of them were, "not yet."
"I can order something for you," Kai offered.
Danny looked at him. "You sure do like to be in control huh?"
Kai made a face, "I was offering a nice gesture!"
"First you take my car," Danny said, his tone and face slipping into a teasing one, happy it was his turn to get Kai all riled up, "now you take my meal, what's next Kalani? What else are you going to take from me?"
Kai stifled a laugh, he looked at Danny, his eyes going to Danny's lips despite himself.
"Kai! Howzit?" A voice interrupted them.
"Alohilani," Kai said, breaking his eye contact with Danny to turn to his old friend.
