Kai stood on the stage at the main clearing of camp, he was pairing the volunteers and new counselors with their respective mentors from the staff.
He paused when he got to the last name on the list, he strained his eyes trying to find Danny in the crowd.
Even though he didn’t spot him he kept going, hoping Danny was there. "And Danny," he said, smirking, "you're with me.”
He waited a moment to see if he could hear any response that would let him know where Danny was.
When he heard nothing he kept going.
“Since you'll be staying at camp during your counselor time," he said, switching back to camp director mode, "we ask that each of you spend at least one night here before summer to help you get a feel for what it'll be like during your stay. You can sign up for those at the front desk!"
He stopped and looked through the crowd again. By now everyone was paired off in groups of two. Everyone except for… Danno, Kai grinned as he spotted him.
"We're gonna start off with a lap," Kai said, "your partners will show you, it's one of our main trails here."
He looked to where Danny was, standing awkwardly off to the side of the crowd, everyone around him chatting with their partners.
He was just staring at Kai.
Is he- Kai froze, staring back- Is he wearing a tie?!
Kai couldn't help but gawk at Danny's business professional attire.
“Right, um," Kai said, shaking his head back into director mode once more. "So lap, and then your mentor will go through the tour and some activities with you, then we’ll all meet back at the big house for the closing campfire, some fun songs and tasty s'mores and food!”
The pairs started heading off into the forest to run the trail.
They zoomed past Danny as he slowly made his way to the stage.
“What are you wearing?” Kai said as he hopped off the stage.
He looked Danny up and down, taking stock as he shook his head. Black dress pants, light blue button down dress shirt and a red tie with gold polka dots.
Well, at least he's wearing running shoes... Kai thought.
“Well hello to you too,” Danny said, “and what do you mean what am I wearing?" "What does it look like I’m wearing?”
“Danny… we’re in a forest... why? ” Kai said, motioning at Danny’s outfit.
“I came straight from work! You never said there was a dress code for this Kalani!”
Kai groaned, “of course not, I thought it was obvious! Wait,” Kai’ stopped, eyeing Danny incredulously, “work? Didn’t you say you were a detective?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Danny, what detective wears a tie?" Kai said, trying to hold back a laugh, "You wear that to work?”
“Yes, I wear this to work." Danny scoffed back. "I'm a detective and I wear a tie to work. And for your information, so do a lot of people back in Chicago.”
“Okay, well, this isn’t the mainland Danny." Kai was trying really hard not to smile, but the more he tried not to, the harder it was. "I mean... at least lose the tie man.”
“Hey, how I dress," Danny said, straightening out his tie, it was one of his favorite tie’s, a father's day gift from Elena, "is no concern of yours. I came here for the first day of training, so are we going to train or what? Your S.O's, secret operatives, are gonna beat your record if you don’t get out there.”
“Danny," Kai said flatly, giving Danny another once over like he still couldn't believe it, "I’m not letting you run dressed like that,”
Danny pouted again. “So, what? I drove out here to the middle of nowhere for nothing? Kalani it’s fine, I’m fine! I’ve run in these clothes before, I’ve chased bad guys in these clothes. I’m good.”
“Yeah?” Kai asked, crossing his arms and shifting his weight. “For a mile and a half?” A cocky smirk spread across his face as he saw Danny's stubbornness falter.
“One and a half? 1.5 miles?" Danny's face went through several expressions, the main ones being horror and shock. "You said one lap!”
“One lap of the trail! And the trail just so happens to be 1.5 miles.”
“Do you- do you make the kids run 1.5 miles on their first day? That’s just cruel torture.”
“I don’t make anybody do anything!" Kai protested. "And no, they don’t run, not unless they join the endurance track.”
“Well, then why are we running?! I don’t wanna be on the endurance track. I opt out.”
“Danny-”
“Can’t we just skip the run? I mean you are the director, right? We’re already starting late, I’m sure there’s other stuff we’re supposed to do. It’ll just slow us down.”
“Come on Danno, a little running won’t kill you. We want our counselors to know the woods and be able to run the trails in case they ever need to for an emergency or something.”
Danny scrunched his face, staring at Kai for a moment before relenting, agreeing with the reasoning behind it.
“Alright!” Kai grinned, “come on I have some clothes I can lend you.”
He turned and led Danny toward one of the cabins in the distance, they were bigger than the cabins surrounding the stage and Kai explained they were the head counselor cabins.
“Hey boss!” Malia, a full-time counselor and one of Kai's best friends, called out breathlessly as she appeared out of the forest, her 1.5 miles done. At her heels stood her trainee who, although a bit out of breath, seemed okay.
Kai and Danny turned to them.
“Did you overlap us?" She said, looking back over her shoulder at the trail she'd just completed. "I don’t remember seeing you pass us?”
“No.” Kai replied, a proud grin growing on his face. “You're the first ones out. Congrats, you won this activity.”
He chuckled as she began dancing and whooping. Her breathless partner and Danny gave each other confused looks.
"For each day of training," Kai explained, "whoever wins the activity of the day gets to lead the closing campfire. Whichever mentor wins the most activities by the end of the training gets a prize.”
“And, thanks to you,” Malia said, placing her arm around her trainee, “We won this one!”
“It’s the first one she’s won.” Kai told Danny. “I usually win this one.”
"I was just kidding about you having a record on the run," Danny said, face shocked. "How fast did she run it? Is that even possible?"
"It was..." Malia checked her watch, "About 12 minutes!" She gave her trainee another high five.
“See how much time we’ve wasted arguing Danny?” Kai said, giving Danny a pointed look.
“No way it’s been 12 minutes.” Danny said, brows furrowing.
“Ah," Kai nodded as if the reason was obvious to him. "That’s 'cause you were talking with me." He said matter of factly, though there was still a trace of a grin on his face. "You know, time flies by when you’re doing something you like.”
“Well," Danny blinked, trying desperately to think of a quick comeback, "then, in that case," he said, glancing over at Malia again, "she must have run it in one minute," he held up one finger, "and it just felt like 12."
He looked at everyone’s confused faces and felt the need to further explain, "Cause… cause time passes slowly when you’re-when you’re not happy- like when you’re talking to someone who says they enjoy running.”
Kai suppressed a grin, it was a difficult task. Malia and her trainee nodded politely, though it looked like Malia was also trying hard not to laugh.
“Come on," Kai said, patting Danny on the back, “let’s go get you changed so we can at least start the lap before everyone else has finished.” He turned and started walking to his cabin again.
Danny grinned awkwardly at Malia and her trainee, “I’m Danny Arturo by the way,” he said, then looked at Malia, “I think I met you the day I met him,” he glanced back at Kai, then did a double-take when he realized the guy was already a few yards away.
“Yeah,” Malia said, “Elena’s dad right? I’m Malia.”
“I’m Alana,” Malia’s trainee said.
“Nice to meet you both,” Danny said, then looked back at Kai again, “I should probably um-” he pointed in Kai’s direction.
The girls nodded, Malia with a smirk on her face.
“Congrats on winning!” Danny said as he turned to run and catch up with Kai.
"Come on Danno," Kai said glancing back at him.
“Can you wait for me please?” Danny called out exasperated, upset he was having to run before the actual running even started.
