It was just around midnight when Bex finally came home. Her whole family had been waiting up for her. Hours earlier the news had broken, there was no stopping it. First Monroe's and his family's death, then the death of Norman Miller. There was no question in the town's mind, a psychopath was on the loose in their small town of Thorndale.
Bex's parents couldn't call her because the girl had left her phone at home. They thought she may have gone to school early but one call to the school and they found that was not the case at all. It didn't help that news also talked about the high number of kids going missing lately.
Bex walked into her house with a sigh, shaking the snow off of herself. When she looked up her eyes met her family. She knew she was in trouble. Still, with all that had happened, Lyssa almost being killed, Joan having a breakdown and Bex having to take her home, not to mention Lyssa's theory that Lacy and McKinley were the ones who actually finished off Norman Miller. Bex was just tired she didn't come home to be punished; she only came to get her phone.
"Where have you been?" Her mom stood up and crossed her arms.
Bex eyed the couch where her dad and her very tired looking sibling sat.
"I was with Lyssa, then I was with Joan, now I'm here." Her arms plopped to her side before she walked towards the stairs.
"Hold it right there young lady, I've had it up to here with your behavior."
Bex sighed before turning back to face her mother.
"Do you have any idea how worried we were? There is a killer on the loose! Children are going missing by the dozen every day! And you have the nerve to sneak out and skip school with your girlfriend? Explain yourself."
"Don't you think I know all that! I know more than any of you! or did you all forget I was attacked? You have no idea what I've been through. Lyssa was attacked last night! She was nearly killed! Then Joan's dad is killed by the freaking psychopaths who are probably watching my every freaking move! You want to talk about nerve well you sure have some nerve coming at me like this. I'm fine by the way, thanks for asking." Bex turned back to the stairs.
"Look at what that girl has done to you, you never talked back like that to me before."
"That girl has a name, and it's Lyssa! I love her okay, so you are going to have to get over whatever weird problem you have with her. She has done so much for me, you have no idea. None of you do. I just, I can't do this right now."
"Rebecca this conversation isn't over!"
"Oh, so it's a conversation now? Because it feels like a confrontation to me!"
"Don't you talk to your mother like that!" Her dad finally stepped in.
"Ugh! I hate both of you! You are so ugh!" Bex ran up the stairs to her room.
"Rebecca!"
Only a few seconds later she ran back down.
"Where are you going?" Her dad asked as she made her way back to the front door.
"In case you missed it, my girlfriend was attacked and nearly killed. My best friend's just lost her dad, and you are all being jerks! So I'm going where I'm needed." She opened the door.
"I can't believe this, what has gotten into you? Where is my daughter? Tell me!"
"She grew up, and she's not coming back." Bex walked outside.
"Rebecca you get back here this instant." Her dad shouted.
"No! I just came back to get my phone. Call me if you need me." Bex walked over to Lyssa's car which was idling by.
"Rebecca! Rebecca! You're grounded do you hear me!" Her dad called after her.
Bex rolled her eyes as she got into Lyssa's car.
Her parents watched as they drove away.
"Well at least she's okay," Abby said trying to lighten the mood.
"Dude," Nathan shook his head.
"You see, I told you!" Bex's mom turned against her husband.
"We will have to talk to her," he said as they stepped back inside.
"Yes because that worked so well this time around."
"You didn't talk to her, you just yelled at her!"
"She had me worried sick!"
"You need to learn to control your emotions,"
"Oh so now I'm emotional?"
"I'm just saying I know where Rebecca gets it from."
"How dare you! You know what Jeff, sleep on the couch." She turned and stormed up the stairs.
Abby looked back and forth between her parents. Their first real argument. Nathan sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"Dad? Is everything going to be okay?" Abby asked.
He sighed.
"Of course sweetie, your sister is just being... difficult. You know parents argue sometimes, everything will be okay. We just got to let everything cool off and try again tomorrow." He rubbed her shoulder.
She hugged him for comfort.
"She said, psychopaths..." Nathan suddenly realized out loud.
His dad raised an eyebrow at him.
"Bex, she said psychopaths, as in plural. Mom said psychopath, but Bex said the plural version. Do you think... That maybe she knows who it is? Why would she think it's more than one person?"
"Wait, what are you saying?" His dad pulled away from Abby.
"I'm saying, I think Bex knows who the killers are. Like she's seen them before. She did say Lyssa was attacked, and Joan's dad too. Plus I think Monroe had a thing for Lyssa. What if the killers are targeting her? She even said so, said they were probably watching her right now. I think maybe she's in danger."
"Oh god, I hope not," Abby said.
"Let's not get any big-brained idea's here. For now, Rebecca is being rebellious. Maybe it was just a slip of the tongue. That's all. No need to overthink things. You two should get to bed."
Nathan sighed but went upstairs, Abby followed him.
Downstairs Jeff looked out the window in worry. It was not like his daughter to act out like that, not at all. What worried him, even more, was that Nathan might be on to something. Something he wasn't ready to think about just yet.
Back at Lyssa's house, Lyssa paced back and forth in front of her coffin.
"It's only for a few hours, I'll wake you up, promise. I'll be here guarding you all night, you need to rest so you can heal up." Bex urged.
Lyssa tried to push down her fears but more than ever she was afraid to go into that coffin. It had almost become her final resting place just a night before. Bloodstains still decorated the old wood.
"It's okay, I'm here. Promise. I'll be up the whole time."
"Well alright then. I set the perimeter alarm and ordered new fencing which should be coming to be installed within the month. Not to mention I put a lock on all the windows and doors. Do you think it's enough?" Lyssa asked.
"More than enough, now stop stalling. I want to binge-watch some shows while you sleep." Bex pushed her towards the coffin.
Lyssa resisted a bit but with a grimace on her face, she forced herself to get in it once again. Bex kissed her goodnight and then moved the lid back into place. The moment it was shut Lyssa panicked.
Fear spiked up and every horrible thing that had ever happened to her relating to the coffin came back to her mind.
"I-I can't. I can't" she tried to push the lid up.
"Just relax, I'm still here."
"I can't do this, get me out!" Lyssa cried.
Bex sighed and removed the lid. Lyssa sat up and gasped for air.
Bex kneeled down next to her and rubbed her back.
"It's okay. I'm here."
Lyssa shook her head no and trembled as she crawled out. Bex sighed and pulled her into her arms.
"Lyssa you're hurt, you need to rest."
"Don't put me in there, no. Don't." Lyssa whimpered and buried her head into Bex's neck.
"Lyssa, if I could lay with you I would. But that thing is tiny, I doubt I could fit."
Lyssa turned and eyed the coffin. It was pretty tiny, but if they laid sideways...
"Lay with me," Lyssa said.
Bex sighed. Before she could argue Lyssa vanished with her super speed only to return with a pillow and a sheet as well as a blanket.
"You're joking, right? Sleeping in a coffin, next to basically a dead body? That's just weird." Bex said.
"Please, just for this one night, for me."
"Fine, but only because you're cute and you turned into a cat for me that one time."
Lyssa smiled at her.
Lyssa fixed up the smelly old coffin and got in. With great effort, Bex squeezed in next to her. It was a very tight fit. They wiggled around some to get more comfortable, then Bex moved the lib in place. It was mostly on all the way, but she left a crack for herself to breath.
"This is weird," Bex said.
"I'm sorry."
Bex kissed her on the back of the neck before wrapping her arms around Lyssa. For a moment they laid in silence.
"Also, very uncomfortable," Bex added.
"Sorry."
"You couldn't have gotten one of those fancy coffins? I want a fancy coffin when I die."
"Our choices were limited back then."
"Emm."
It was silent again.
"You asleep yet?" Bex asked after a long pause.
"Please Rebecca, silence is key."
Bex huffed and wiggled some more, her hip bone aching in protest. Lyssa also wiggled around a bit, pushing her body deeper into Bex. Bex crinkled her nose at the overwhelming musty old wood smell.
She toughed it out for about an hour. For Lyssa, but when she was sure the Vampire was asleep she carefully got out and popped her back several times before moving the lid in place. Then like the previous plan, she camped out in the basement lounge with snacks and binged watched a Netflix show.
She was drifting off when the sun started coming up, her eyes red from having stared at the screen of Lyssa's laptop for so long. She yawned and closed the laptop before walking over to the coffin. She opened it up and smile at Lyssa's sleeping face. Then carefully she squeezed in next to Lyssa, jostling the vampire around a bit.
She figured she was tired enough to fall asleep regardless of how awful sleeping in that coffin was. Lyssa opened one eye still half asleep. She felt Bex put her arms around her and cuddle up close to her.
This caused her to smile and drift off to sleep once more.
They slept for a few hours more before Lyssa woke on her own.
"Rebecca, wake up." Lyssa moved around in her grasp.
"Hmm?" Bex sat up with a start and hit her head on the lid.
"Ow," she complained.
Lyssa couldn't help but chuckle a bit.
With a pout, Bex pushed the lid open and they got out.
"Ugh, my back, sleeping in that thing might be a deal-breaker for me." Bex joked.
"Thank you for putting up with it for me." Lyssa smiled.
"Of course, that's what girlfriends do. I think. Still new to this whole girlfriend thing."
"Well, I think it might be a Rebecca thing. Not a girlfriend thing. And I love that about you."
"Love it enough to get me breakfast and start a shower?"
"Of course my love."
"And let me see that secret room you won't let me go in?"
"Don't push it," Lyssa warned.
Bex pouted.
The two quickly got washed up before Lyssa left to go get food. Bex walked over to the room and tried to the doorknob, she pouted when it was locked.
"What a jerk." She said.
With that pout she went downstairs to the lounge room and laid on the chair, turning the tv on. The news flashed more missing person flyers before breaking the coverage on the murderer on the loose.
Her stomach turned and she flipped off the tv. She still didn't want to think about that yet. Bex would rather pretend the world was perfect in her little bubble than face scary problems. She had always been like that ever since she was young.
Once her dad locked her in a room and told her she had to kill her own roach for once. Well her solution was to drop a box over the bug and pretend it didn't exist. When her dad removed the box the roach was gone and it would later make its grand reappearance while Nathan was in the shower.
That's just how she was. She didn't like being forced to deal with things. She didn't like harsh realities. She was a simple girl with a simple mind, and now... Now that was becoming increasingly harder to do. She could only block out the noise for so long.
She could feel the world closing in on her. Two crazy vampires on the loose, vampire slayers on the hunt, her parents breathing down her neck, Lyssa trying to get her to run away with her. The more she tried to ignore it the heavier her shoulders felt.
