I collapse against the floor, my breaths ragged.I close my eyes to try and stop the sudden dizziness. Again, I order myself. I have to make this perfect. At the last concert, I fell. I tried playing it off but inside, I was pissed at myself.
"You need to slow down." Dragon sighs. "Lay down. Take a moment."
"I don't have time."
He snorts. "Of course you do. You just want to keep pushing yourself until you end back up in the hospital. Then what? Do you want to stay out of future performances? That’s what’s going to happen if you keep doing this."
Nothing is going right. They have it so easy. Their standards are low compared to what I hold myself to. Right now, I’m a disappointment. Tears blur my vision and I stand up to keep Dragon from seeing them. My phone dings across the room.
"Your friend is texting." Dragon teases. I run a hand over my face, discreetly removing the tears before glaring at him. He just grins, laying on the floor of the studio with his eyes closed. Marching over to my phone, I pick it up, clicking on the picture that Morgan sent. It's him and Kim. He's trying to keep from laughing, his dark brown hair pulled back into a messy bun while Kim is oblivious in the background. She's on her phone watching one of our newest videos. Another picture pops up and Morgan's cheesy grin fills my screen. My body relaxes. I slide down the wall to stare at his face. How did I get this way?
"Why are you so cute?" I groan softly as I touch the screen.
Across the room, I hear Dragon. "It's in my genes."
"Shut up." I chuckle. After the talk Jay and I had back in America a few months ago, the questions and doubts began popping up. A part of me knows that there is a chance that he can betray me. I just hope my faith in him outweighs my doubts. It’s been six months and talking with him daily has become just as natural as talking with my brothers..
"We have a concert soon." Dragon stands up. "Get some rest, no more practicing."
Without looking at him, I give him a nod. I begin to eagerly type back to Morgan.
The cafe never looks busy.
Standing up, I begin to pick up the water bottles and towels that are scattered over the floor. I swear my shoes went flying somewhere during choreo without me knowing. Ding.
I think Kim scares most of them away.
Sounds about right. She reminds me of Dragon sometimes.
Morgan responds instantly. Creepy. He adds three scared faces before the screen goes black with his name and his ringtone. I hit the call button.
“Aren't you going to get in trouble if you're not working?” I tease.
“Please, what is she going to do? Fire me? I'm the one who drags in the customers. It's my sparkling personality. What are you doing up so late?" His voice soothes me as I throw the bottles away in the trash can.
I sigh loudly. "Trying to practice."
"Should I let you go?" His voice goes soft.
"Don't." I blurt. "I enjoy talking to you. It relaxes me."
Morgan's chuckle does something inside me and I can't help but rub my chest. I can't fall for the guy. There are so many cons to this situation.
"I've been told I do a lot of things to people but relax is a first for me."
Flipping the lights off to the studio, I begin walking down the hallway that leads to the stairs. Our dance studio was underground. It was a good idea since it muted most of the noise from our practices .
"Oh? What do you do to people then?" A hint of flirting entering my voice.
"Annoy them. Kim is the prime suspect."
Smack. I listen as Kim hisses at him. "Oh she told me I should say I'm lying and that she thinks I'm an amazing person."
Smack. "I think you should stop riling her up before you end up in the hospital." I say with a laugh.
"Maybe you're right. Are you going to head to bed soon?"
I make a noise as I begin to climb the stairs. "I should but lately I can’t sleep with everything that’s happening this week. We have a concert tomorrow. Actually we have one for the next three days. Then it's a little break before things pick up again."
There's a shuffling noise on the other end of the phone before Morgan's voice grows quiet. "If you need me to come bail you out, let me know."
I pause in the middle of the stairwell, leaning against the wall. "Would you come and save me?"
"Of course."
My smile dies away and I bite my lip. "You're my superhero."
"Well, I don't like you upset." He growls. "I'll come over there and fight them all off for your honor."
I push myself away from the wall with a snort. "You would get pummeled."
"Says who?"
"I don't see you as the type of person who fights." The big dorm holds ten bedroom along with a huge living area and a kitchen that Hajoon uses.
Morgan sighs. "I may be a lover, not a fighter, but I can change."
"Thank you for making my day." Sincerity is plainly visible in my voice.
"Kang." Just hearing him say my name does something to me. "You know I'm here if you ever need to talk."
Why does that make me feel better? "I know."
"If you just want to vent, cry, or scream, you can call me anytime. I'll listen."
"If you keep talking like that you're going to make me fall for you." I tease. "You're going to spoil me."
He scoffs. "I doubt you can be spoiled."
Opening the door to my room, I collapse onto the bed, closing my eyes. "I'm ready for the next tour so I can head back over there."
"Do you love America that much?"
"You country does have some redeeming qualities." I chuckle. "I just like the atmosphere over there. I love the energy."
Morgan groans as if he's stretching. "Because we're all just a tad bit wild over here. Can't blame us. I've lost my mind seeing you a couple times."
Interest makes me perk up. "Oh really?"
"Can you blame me?" Was that a hint of flirting in his tone? "Have you seen the way you look?"
"All day, everyday. Please do go on about how I look."
"Lee Kangsu." He warns. "You don't want to play this game. We'll be up all night and from the way your voice went husky you're falling asleep."
I yawn. "Am not."
"Should I sing you to sleep?"
"You suck at singing." I remind him.
He starts singing dramatically off key before we both snort in amusement. "I may not be as good as you, but I can somewhat keep a tune."
"To what, a dying whale?"
"You wound me. I'm hanging up."
I jerk my eyes open. "Wait." Silence greeted me on the other end. "Morgan?"
"Yes, Kang?"
"Thank you." I sigh.
"You're welcome. Get some rest. I'll stay on the phone until you fall asleep."
Closing my eyes, I roll onto my side and stare at his face on the phone. Maybe he wasn't gay. Maybe he was just being a really good friend. Either way, I appreciated him more than he would ever know.
The next day goes by in a blur. Wake up, train, eat something, train, then do the concert. On the second day, I’m exhausted and so are the others. Tension begins running high.
"You stepped out of line." Sunshine growls as he shows us the video on YouTube.
Jay's jaw was clenched and from the way it pokes out slightly, I know he is pissed.
"Whoa, whoa." DaeDae steps between them. "Everyone just relax."
"I'm doing my best." Jay growls.
My eyes widen. I've rarely seen him like this.
"Did I say you weren't doing your best? I'm saying for you to pay attention to your own moves."
"Not all of us are as skilled as you." Hajoon supplies. "It's one mistake. We learn from it. Let's move on from this conversation."
Sunshine scoffs and throws his hands up. "Fine. Moving on."
"Sun." Jun calls as Sunshine leaves the room. "What do we do now?"
"We relax until the concert." Jay replies before he storms out of the studio. Jun looks at me and I shrug. What was I supposed to do?
Silence echoes in the room and the rest of us are just pretty much lost. "Anyone want to rock, paper, scissors on getting them to talk again?” DaeDae forces a strained chuckle.
The others begin to file away leaving me alone with the youngest. "What?"
"Sometimes joking isn't the right thing to do." I supply.
"I hate seeing them fight. This is our last concert. We're just...stressed."
He can say that again. I pull my phone out and send a text to Morgan asking him to call me when he gets the chance. I could really use his voice right now.
"Kang?"
My head jerks up and search Dae's eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Do you think we might disband if things go bad between us?"
Where did that thought come from? "No way are we disbanding. You got it?"
Tears brim his eyes and I pull him into a hug. "We'll be fine. I promise we will."
He clutches me tightly, his body shaking with silent sobs. After a couple of minutes of him letting his emotions free, he pulls back and leaves without a word. He's probably too embarrassed to say anything. I leave the dance studio to hunt the two hard heads down. Jay is in his studio and I can hear the music blaring from Sunshines room. I storm towards Sunshine and open his door. He's lying on his bed, his leg bent over his knee as he bobs his head to the music.
"Get out here. Now." I snarl the words before I beeline towards our leader. Banging on his door, I cross my arms and wait as he opens it.
"Yeah?" Furrowing his eyebrows.
"Sit." I point to the couch in the living room.
His jaw immediately clenches and I raise an eyebrow. Jay may the smartest, logically among us but I was the firecracker. When my anger hit its peak, I was deadly.
"Why are you calling us out here?" Sunshine asks as Jay follows me into the living room .
Turning to face both of them, I shoot them both daggers. "We're a family. A family sits and talks things out. We don't have time to go around each other and be mad when we have a concert tomorrow. You're both perfectionists and this hit both of your buttons. You need to talk it out or I swear on my mother, I will beat both of you."
"Someone woke the beast." I hear someone whisper behind me.
Another person shushes them.
"And sometimes we have to take a step back and be alone." Jay interjects.
"We don't have time to be alone. You'll be stuck in your studio until we have to leave for the concert. He'll be in his room pouting because he feels guilty."
When Sunshine straightens, I give him a pointed look. "Am I wrong?"
He instantly pouts. "No."
"We make mistakes. We are not perfect. If we can't get along then our fans will know. I'm not going to make them worry over something petty as stepping out of line. How many times have we performed? How many times have we done this routine?"
"I don't want anyone calling Jay out for his mistakes. He works hard and doesn't deserve the criticism." Sunshine admits.
Jay swallows hard. "And I feel bad for disappointing you after you spend so many hours helping me train."
Sunshine shakes his head hard. "You could never disappoint me. You're my leader. You're my closest friend."
"Hey." Dragon calls out. "When did he get that title?"
The tension breaks and we relax. Sunshine moves towards Jay and wraps him up in his arms. "I'm sorry for yelling."
"Me too."
"Now kiss and make up." DaeDae begins pushing their heads together. Jay pushes him away right before Jun rushes in with a bottle of water. He pours it over their heads,a huge grin on his face.
I drop my arms to my side, watching as Sunshine chases after Jun. Our group is a chaotic mess. We fight, make up, and grow stronger with our understandings. It's what brothers do. We learn from each other.
"Ow, ow, ow." Jun whines. "Not the hair."
"Should have thought about that before drenching me." Sunshine has him in a headlock. Hajoon jumps on Sunshine's back and wraps his arms and legs around him.
Grabbing my phone, I snap a picture of the scene and put it under my blackmail photos. We each go to our rooms to change clothes.
“Let’s watch a movie.” Hajoon suggests.
“Something with lots of action.” Dragon replies as he collapses against the couch. We all manage to cram onto the couch with DaeDae laying on top of some of us.
