“What do you want with me?” Iola gasped, pressing hard against the wooden door of her room. “And why aren’t you at the dungeon? It is but an hour to midnight.”
“Let me in.” Kadar whispered hoarsely from outside the door. “Our plans have gone all wrong.”
“What ever do you mean?” The clanswoman shivered, still pressing her full weight against the door despite it being locked and bolted.
“Let me in, you fool girl.” Kadar pleaded. “Others must not hear what I have to say... let me in.”
Iola closed her eyes, breathing in deeply. In as much as she loathed the prospect of being alone in a room with the unkempt guardsman, she was anxious about what he had to say.
She hoped she could remember some of those self-defence spells her mother had taught her when she was but a wee girl.
“What is it?” She grated, grudgingly allowing the large man into the room, but keeping herself between him and the door left ajar.
“I could not swap places with any of the guards. It seems governor Esamos assigned his own men to guard your grandfather.” Kadar whispered breathlessly. “What is he... a great war-chief or clan elder?”
“You mean Dacia is in there with no means of escape... and my grandfather... I... what...”
“Yes, curse our ill luck.” The burly guardsman spat.
“But we relied on you...” Iola wrung her hands in exasperation.
“It is out of my hands... “ Kadar shrugged his immense shoulders. “...the guards were appointed by Esamos himself. I am not familiar with any of them.”
“I... I have to do something.” Iola looked around the room desperately. “But what?”
“Six guards are on duty in the dungeon at this hour. None that I am familiar with...” Kadar sat down on Dacia’s bed, next to her cache of weapons left there for safekeeping.
“Had that you known of this before she got herself arrested.” Iola buried her face in her palms.
