“Esamos changed the guards this afternoon.” Kadar groaned. “I had no means of knowing without getting there... and by then our plan was already set in motion.”
Fear and panic took turns gripping her heart. Iola recounted how Torus, the clan war-chief and some of the elders were not in favour of her doing this.
A sinking feeling made her want to throw-up.
She would be failing them all - her people, their lands, and most of all her dear grandfather.
Fighting back tears, the young woman closed her eyes, praying for whatever gift she had to guide her through this.
Then suddenly another jolt went through her. She staggered back, leaning against the door.
A swirl of light danced around inside her head, making her giddy. She could hear something, very distant and reverberating.
A hawk’s shrill call, a wolf’s howl, or was it her name being called. She couldn’t quite discern, but she knew it was important.
“Are you feeling ill?” She heard Kadar’s voice. It sounded distant and muffled as well.
“I am all right.” Iola shook her head and stood up straight. “I must rescue my grandfather... that is what I am here to do.”
“How do you plan on doi...” The guardsman looked at her in amazement.
“Can you take me to the gates of the stronghold?” She asked him directly.
“Yes, I can... but what will you do?”
“You need not trouble yourself with that, Kadar.” Iola gave the man a weak smile. “Help me to the gates and you can take your leave.”
“It may be dangerous for one such as...” Kadar looked at her with some disquiet.
“It is not your concern any longer.” She turned away and opened the door.
“As you wish.” He stood up and exhaled deeply. “When would you like to leave?”
“Immediately.”
