"It is." He said nodding in agreement. "You want me to give you a lift into town? I think I've figured out what was wrong with this computer. Now all I have to do is fix it and put it back together again."
"That would be a great help! Thanks!" I told him.
We ate the rest of our breakfast in silence and I did my best to ignore a pixie that had decided to moon me from the other side of the window. Pixies were annoying little mischief makers with a painful poisonous bite and ugly looks. Once they know you can see them, they do just about anything to get you to react to them. One time I had a whole swarm of them at the window that had come just to bother me while I was eating. The scene and mess they had made was something I wish I could forget.
After I done eating and doing my daily chores, my dad drove me to the downtown police station where my parents thought I did the occasional odd job for them. In truth, it was actually just the public front of the organization I worked for. It was only the local branch of it that also covered the nearby counties and it had a direct connection to the state's main branch.
I got out of the car and said good bye to my dad when we got there before heading inside. It looked fairly normal on the inside for a police station with desks and offices. Here and there though, there was a sprinkling of less than human beings among the officers and workers and I saw the occasional glint of magic items on them. There was only a drunk elf sleeping on the bench, waiting to be processed or for a ride home to their grove but, other than that, seemed it would be slow again today.
I put on my trainee pass and sat down next to the elf to wait for someone from the 'other division' to come and check me in. I didn't have to wait long before my mentor and supervisor came and got me. He brought me into the back past where the dispatcher was. It was a werewolf in human form today and he kept a look out for us as we used the elevator behind the secret door that was in there.
"So do you have any work for me today or will it just be weapon training?" I asked him on the way down.
"There was a big raid recently near the Mexican boarder and Headquarters sent us some of it. Mostly it's just routine items to help you gain more experience in identifying things. There are a few mystery items that have them baffled and they were hoping you could shed some light on for them. They sent along some books and resources that they thought might be related to the mystery items." He told me.
"Nothing living I hope."
"Not this time," he reassured me. "Is your trauma bothering you again?"
"Yeah." I replied. "Speaking of them, can we stop by pest control? I've got another gremlin for them to take care of."
"Again?" He asked me in surprise. "What does that make this week? 20? 22?"
"24 total since Sunday and all young ones to boot. I may have to check the basement again for a nest." I replied.
