"Wonderful, more homework. Well, I better get to work then." I said, staring at the mess and sighing. I looked back at my mentor. "Can you tell me when it gets to around 3 o'clock. I want to at least take a look at the mystery items before I have to go home."
"Will do but you can take a look at them whenever you want though. You do know that, right?"
"Yeah, but I rather end the day with something interesting." I told him.
We said our good byes and I got to work. My cloth surgical mask came in handy here as it kept the dust from the various books and objects I would be handling from getting into my nose. I went through the known items that were there; sorting, categorizing, and familiarizing myself in general with them. I spent several hours like this pausing only to have a break at noon to eat something. It kept me busy and, before I knew it, 3 o'clock had come around.
I was pretty eager to see what had stumped the others and I opened the box holding them. I went through them one by one to see what I could make of them before I had to leave for the day. Only a few of the items had any magic in them and I puzzled over their possible purposes before moving on. Over half of the items in the box didn't have magic of any kind but rather felt like they were meant for channeling and focusing mystical energies. I didn't know what they could do and they were of varying ages so I put down some notes for later use. What was left after I looked at those, were what looked to be things meant to be used as regents in spell crafting, enchantments, or potion making.
Of the supposed regents, there was one that stood out. It was a round, black, lumpy thing about the size of a nectarine or peach. It appeared to have an outer covering made of a material similar to a moth's cocoon minus the stray threads that would have anchored it to a surface or stick. It had a very odd feeling to it so I reached out and picked it up in order to examine it closer.
When I did, I felt several somethings pierce the fingers and palm of the hand I grabbed it with. They were followed by a painful burning cold sensation that numbed the hand holding it and traveled up my arm. I yelled in agony and Tina, along with several others working in the archives, came to my aid. They tried to pry it from my fingers but it was no use and Tina went for more help. They came and brought me to the medical ward where the medical personal took their turn to pry the black lumpy ball from my hand. They didn't have any luck either so instead they preformed supportive care until whatever was going on between me and the ball was completed.
The ball dropped from my limp fingers when whatever had attack me was finished with my hand. There were several lesions in the palm of my hand and the burning cold had spread further up my arm by then and had gone pass my elbow. It wasn't as intense as it was was when it first started but it hadn't gone away yet either. I had also begun to feel very faint at that point too. This concerned them and they took samples of my blood to keep track of my condition. They found out from their tests that my blood sugar levels, among other things, was dropping rapidly. They gave me glucose through an I.V. along with a vitamin rich drink. That seemed to do the trick and my condition stabilized. By this time, the sensation had reached my shoulder before completely disappearing.
After they were certain it was safe for me to go home, they gave me cover story for the injury to my hand and a reason for my parents to keep an eye on my blood sugar levels and temperature. Then they had my mentor take me home. It wasn't even an hour after I had returned home that I started to feel unwell again. My dad took my temperature and my blood sugar levels on the off chance that they were low again. They were and I had a temperature of 96 degrees Fahrenheit. This made him worried so he gave me one of his emergency glucose packets and called mom.
