"Oh, wow," Danny whispered as they reached the top clearing.
There were trees lined around them, taller hills and mountains in the distance blanketed green. Ahead was the ocean, a vibrant blue, more mountains lining around her.
"Yeah." Kai walked up to the edge, to an old bench made from a fallen tree trunk. "My grandpa and I used to hike up here when I was little."
He sat down on the bench, patted the space next to him, motioning Danny to come.
"It's my…” Kai said as Danny walked over to him, “I don't know, happy place— my special spot."
Danny carefully sat down on the bench. There were a few feet of grass between it and the edge of the cliff, but he still felt a bit nervous.
You should put a railing up here, he almost suggested.
"Are kids coming up here?" He asked instead.
Kai shook his head no, closing his eyes a cool breeze moved through them.
Danny watched him for a moment, as the breeze ruffled through Kai's curls, billowed his shirt.
A shiver ran through Danny, the breeze not mixing well with his sweat.
I just love running and hiking, he thought sarcastically, taking a moment to comb his hands through his messy hair, trying to get it to settle back down.
He glanced back at Kai, still with his eyes closed, and Danny decided to do the same.
He closed his eyes, felt the breeze wash over him again, but this time he noticed that it brought with it the scent of ocean and rainforest to him.
He took in a deep breath, could feel his shoulders drop as he exhaled, tightness easing.
He rolled his shoulders, slowly stretching his neck side to side, could feel the warmth of the sun kissing his cheeks, melting his muscle aches.
A soft smile spread on his lips.
He could hear the waves crashing in the ocean below them, the song of the trees dancing around them, the calls of the birds gliding above them.
He didn't want to leave. Didn't want to open his eyes.
He wasn’t sure how long he stayed like that before he remembered Kai was sitting next to him.
Reluctantly, Danny opened his eyes, catching Kai’s gaze on him. But Kai quickly looked away, focusing his eyes on the ocean, a small smile on his face.
Danny pressed his lips together, too relaxed to let self consciousness take over again. He ran a hand through his hair again and looked around.
Below them he could see some of the camp clearing, he could make out people moving around, they looked like ants.
He looked at Kai again and a question popped into Danny’s head.
Do you bring all the parent volunteers up here?
Danny looked back out at the ocean, his leg fidgeted up and down. His eyes narrowed as he thought about the question, feeling a bit confused by the implications of it, by the implications of the possible answers.
It felt too complicated for his tired and relaxed brain to sort through, so he settled on a different question.
“So,” Danny said, “you said you came up here with your grandpa?”
“Yeah,” Kai said, looking at Danny, “he left me the place. Well, me and my sister, but she’s… she’s off in California.”
Danny nodded, “so your grandad started the camp?”
Kai nodded, a proud grin on his face, “the camp was his life, he poured everything he had into this place.”
Danny pulled his legs up, sitting cross-legged on the bench, “it’s cool that you get to run it now.”
Kai shrugged and nodded, “it wasn’t always the plan, but…” he looked out at the ocean.
Danny watched Kai’s face harden a bit, recognizing the feeling— thousands of thoughts and memories flooding through you.
He watched Kai swallow, then clear his throat.
“Yeah,” Kai said, looking back at Danny, “I’m grateful for this place. This camp, the people here, they’re my ohana.”
Danny nodded, they looked down at the camp clearing.
“How big is the camp?” Danny asked.
“Uh, here," Kai leaned in closer to Danny, shoulders touching as he leaned his head in to get Danny's perspective. "Do you see the flagged off area at the beach, up to the buoys?” Kai pointed down at a pretty big area on the beach.
“Yeah.”
“That’s where we do our boat races, teach the kids how to swim and surf, go scuba diving and yadda yadda yadda. From there all of that is technically, legally considered Camp 5O.” Kai traced an outline with his finger, portioning off a big chunk of land below them.
“Wow," Danny said, taking it all in, "that’s... pretty big. Don’t you worry about kids getting lost?”
Kai smiled because of course Danny would ask that.
He explained that in the camp’s lifetime that had never happened and walked Danny through their safety procedures and precautions.
Danny nodded along, asking questions and taking mental notes, grateful Kai was taking the time to explain it all to him.
He was about to ask another follow-up question when his phone cut him off.
“Uh sorry," Danny quickly apologized, recognizing the ringtone, "that’s Cristie calling.”
Kai tried not to eavesdrop as Danny stood up to take the call, but Danny was a loud talker so Kai couldn’t really help it.
“What do you mean you can’t?” Danny asked, pacing in circles. “No—Cristie don’t— don’t twist my words, okay? Of course, I would love to have Elena a day early! You know that, that’s not what—”
Danny stopped walking and took in a deep breath.
Danny looked at Kai and nodded towards the trail they had come up. Kai nodded and got up instantly, he walked over to Danny and led him back down the hill.
They walked in silence, apart from Danny’s responses to Cristie. From what Kai could tell they seemed to cut each other off a lot.
When they got to the rocky part of the hill Kai quietly held out his hand for Danny, Danny took it.
“Why— why are you—” Danny said, tightening his grip around Kai’s hand a little, “No Cristie-Cristie- you always just assume!"
Kai focused on the ground, trying his best to lead them down quickly and safely.
“Yes, I’m on my way! I—Because I’m not near her school, she’s gonna—yes— remember? I said I was gonna do the camp thing I—why would I have said it as a joke?! I’m at the camp!” Danny stopped walking, the sudden motion nearly making him and Kai lose their balance.
Kai quickly regained his footing and was able to steady himself and Danny.
Danny gave him a thankful nod and they continued down the hill. They had already gotten past the rocky part but their hands remained locked in each others.
“Of course, I’m happy to have an extra day with her! But apparently, you and Robbie don’t seem to think that anymore, you know contrary to your beliefs, I am a good father and I will always try to be there for Elena!”
Danny glanced at Kai and Kai nodded passionately in agreement, nodding his head so hard he almost lost his balance and had to hold on to Danny’s hand even tighter to steady himself.
