“Danno!” Elena yelled when she spotted Danny.
The teacher, Ms. Andi stopped talking and grinned as Elena ran to give her dad a hug.
“Hi, Danny." Ms. Andi said, smiling as Danny and Elena walked over to her and the rest of the students.
“Hi Ms. Andie," Danny grinned.
“Dad,” Elena said, pulling Danny towards one of her classmates, “this is Sophia, she was at Camp with me!”
“I’m Elena’s best friend,” Sophia said, holding out her hand for Danny to shake. “Nice to finally meet you Mr. Elena’s dad.”
“Sophia,” Danny grinned as he shook her hand, “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Likewise," Sophia said. “You were with Papa Seal today?” she asked, still shaking Danny’s hand.
Danny looked at Elena.
“That’s what some of the campers called Kai.” Elena explained.
“Oh,” Danny nodded, I dislike that very much.
“It’s like Papa Bear, but with Seal instead,” Sophia explained, finally letting go of Danny’s hand so she could explain with her hands, “because he’s a Seal.”
“Mm,” Danny nodded, “how clever.”
Sophia grinned and nodded.
“So?” Elena asked as they got into the car.
“So what?” Danny feigned innocence as they buckled themselves in.
Elena sighed, “Danno! Today was the first day of camp! How was it?” Elena was practically jumping in her seat.
“It was...” Danny tilted his head side to side, “It was nice..." Then he scrunched his face together. "He made us run.”
She giggled then added, glancing at his clothes, “Is that why you're wearing Kai’s clothes?”
Danny looked down, surprised by the remark.
Oh, right...
He'd left in such a hurry that he’d forgotten to stop at Kai’s cabin to change.
“Um yeah,” Danny said, “I guess I’ll have to return them on Monday after I drop you off at school.”
“Do you have camp again Monday?” Elena asked, her face furrowing together, much like her father's did sometimes.
“No, just Fridays. But I can stop by Kai’s house,” Danny said as he pulled out of the parking lot, “it’s not too far from us.”
Elena stayed quiet, simply nodding at the fact that her father knew where her camp director lived.
“So, how was art club?” Danny asked, pulling onto the road.
“It was good, we just went over some techniques I already knew. Nothing too hard,” she shrugged, “did you like the closing bonfire?”
“I left a little before that.”
“Oh. Right. Sorry, I made you leave early Danno.”
“No pumpkin," Danny said earnestly, looking at Elena again, "I’m happy I got to pick you up early, Now we can go for shave ice! Or whatever else you want. And besides, there’s a bonfire at the end every time, right? I’ll go to it next week.”
Elena nodded then, registering the first part of Danny’s comment, added, “Wait, we're going for shave ice!?”
“Hey monkey,” Danny said, looking over at Elena.
They were sitting on a park bench next to the shave ice stand, Elena was almost done with hers.
“Yeah, Danno?” She said, though her attention was on the cone in her hand.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were also in the art track? Or that there were even tracks to begin with? And that you picked Kai’s? And why did you pick Kai’s? His activities were pretty dangerous.”
Elena just turned and stared at him with wide eyes as he bombarded her with questions, then she simply shrugged in response and went back to her shave ice.
"Miss Malia is super cool. So is Kai.” She eventually said, “her art track was fun, so was Kai’s.”
Danno looked at her for a few more moments, unable to contain the smile that formed on his lips. He threw his arm over El and they continued devouring their treats.
While Danny was cooking dinner for himself and Elena he sent Kai a text to tell him he still had his clothes.
Don't worry about it, you can wear them for next week :) - Kai replied a few seconds later.
Okay - Danny replied.
He was about to put his phone away when it chimed again.
Lunch wednesday? Your treat ;) - Joey
Two friends in the span of one week— Danny grinned as he replied to Joey— Mom would be proud.
