Divine will (ch8 pt2)

Divine will (ch8 pt2)

Nov 24, 2019

The room was surprisingly well lit for being in what amounted to a crypt. Silver and gold sconces again decorated the walls and along the wall opposite the door was a long tapestry of the same image as the mural. A simple chest sat in front of the tapestry, bound with bronze straps and covered in what looked to be the same runes that were on Gilly's books, Alex studied them then turned to Gilly. "What do these mean?" He pointed at the runes. Gilly leaned down over the chest and looked at them for a moment.

"Death will be given to those undeserving." Gilly read the words back to Alex. She shrugged lightly at him. "It’s just a warning to prevent people from attempting to steal from the cathedral." She smiled sweetly. "Don’t you worry your pretty little head about it little bird. It doesn't apply to you. Open it; it’s got what she gifted you in there."

Alex, with some trepidation reached out to it. As his fingertips touching the chest he felt a light jolt along his skin, like the discharge of static electricity. He pulled his hand back and waved his hand at the sudden shock. Alex turned to look at Gilly who was looking on with an amused look. "What is it anyway?" He asked her.

Gilly shrugged mildly "I don’t know what she gifted you; I've never even been in this room before, I was always told I'd be bringing someone worthy of it here and that she would tell them when it was time. So this is as new to me as it is you. Quit being a baby and open it up, that little shock is just probing magick to see if you're worthy, if you weren't you'd be dead already."

Alex's expression soured slightly. "Magick, right." He sighed and reached out enduring the quick shock again and flipping the lid open with a little effort. It wasn't that he didn't believe her it was more of a difficult concept to grasp. He looked into the chest, inside sat a bolt of black silk, and a silver breastplate underneath those was the glimmer of what looked like gold. Alex pulled the other objects out placing them beside himself. He looked back in to examine the glimmer; the last object inside the chest was what looked like an arming sword. It had a hilt that looked to be traced and inlaid in gold, padded with that same black silk where his hand would grip it. He reached in and withdrew the blade looking it over; it was in a leather scabbard dyed white with runes etched into the leather. He saw a little sparkle on the pommel and saw a crimson red ruby placed in where the weight would be.

Alex looked up to Gilly somewhat confused, he’d been mildly trained to use a sword in the military; as a sergeant it was common practice to carry one into the field. So this wasn't too out of place to assume he'd be able to use it. Gilly was beaming at Alex almost giddy with excitement. "Pull it out Alex, look at the blade." He did as he was requested and the weapon came free of the scabbard easily. The blade was a wicked black, almost blue in the right light. He looked at the weapon feeling the balance of the blade was superb, a wiggle of his wrist and he felt almost as if the blade was merely an extension of his arm. He closed his eyes and slid the weapon back into the scabbard. Gilly was quickly moving around Alex bumping into him. "Well then little bird, off with the shirt. You need to put this plate on” Alex propped the sword against a wall and turned looking at Gilly.

"Seriously? In here? I'm starting to think you just want my shirt off on general principle Gilly." He could see her obvious excitement at the contents of the chest and try as he might to delay; she was having none of it. Gilly instead moved over to him poking him in the chest and tugging at the collar of his shirt with her free hand while holding the silver breastplate with the other.

"Perks of the position, now hurry up already, I've never seen this happen and I want to see what it does." Alex shook his head rolling his eyes slightly at the woman. He pulled up his shirt and hung it over the hand guard of the sword taking the breastplate from the lithe woman. He examined it and saw runes once again all over the armor. He squinted at it but every time they'd start to come into focus so he could make sense of the shapes they would seemingly shift slightly. Alex frowned slightly and slid the bulky metal chest piece over his head like one would a shirt. He shifted uncomfortably at the new weight. He felt a heat emanating from the metal once he was settled, to his surprise he saw the metal shifting as if it were alive around him closing in and suddenly feeling snug and comfortable around his torso. The weight seemed to shift and stir and he felt as it was no longer on his body. He raised his hand up feeling his chest and this new protective layer around his torso.

"This is amazing; I can’t even feel it anymore." He turned and twisted his torso and the armor moved and shifted with him. Gilly moved over and grabbed his shirt for him throwing it back to him and picking up the bolt of silk. "What is the cloth for, do you think?" Gilly was too busy getting everything in order, but she shrugged and smiled a smile that gave him the feeling she was up to something. He looked at her and pulled his shirt back over his head only to be greeted with a sharp jab in the thigh by Gilly poking him with the pommel of the blade. He shot a look of mock indignation at her and took the weapon in hand. He slid the scabbard in place over his left hip on his belt. After he was done he looked at Gilly who held the bolt of cloth who was eagerly waiting at the door. She pushed the door open and waited on Alex, when he joined her they started back up the stairs promptly making their way out of the main doors of the cathedral. Alex still had quite a lot to get used to, the idea of being a champion of a goddess he'd never heard of until this moment. The idea that magick was real, and actively used. This woman, who managed to grow on him quite thoroughly, the people of this place he was in. Everything was alien to him, but the image of Gilly happily bouncing along the street and leading him along helped to keep his mind fully in place. He was happy to see her excited. He smiled at no one in particular and followed along on her path.

Gilly stopped beside a door leading into a shop, she held her hand up stopping Alex in his tracks. "Stay out here, I’ll be right back!" She didn't wait for his reply and simply bolted into the shop. Alex looked at the window and saw various pieces of clothing on display on mannequins and looked over a wooden placard that hung over the door, It had a needle and thread as the picture, He couldn't make out the name of the establishment due to the runes that gave the obvious name away. He felt it would be wise for him to learn this language, or at least how to read it. Alex turned around looking into the street at the various passer-bys he really was in an entirely new place. People with ears pointed like Gilly's, people who looked like the Satyr boy, even people who looked like full blown animals. This was a bizarre world he found himself in, and he could only take it in and try his level best not to lose his calm. They all seemed like normal people after all, many of them simply going to the market or visiting friends and family. They all seemed more than happy with one another, even a few people waving at Alex as they went by. While it was visually shocking for the man, it was strangely soothing to see so many happy people.

His thoughts were interrupted by the feeling of an arm curling around his. He looked down to see Gilly smiling an impish grin at him and tugging at his arm. "You seem, incredibly pleased with yourself. Should I be concerned?" Alex looked at her as she started to hum to herself while they walked. Gilly shrugged nonchalantly and kept on her way pulling Alex along. He shook his head lightly walking beside her the path they took led to some vaguely familiar sights places he saw the day before. It wasn't long before Alex and Gilly stopped in front of the door of the Tavern she had taken him to the day before. He looked up seeing that same statue as before seeing the resemblance to The Morrigan now, but something seemed strange about it. He couldn't quite place his finger on what it was. He turned and looked at Gilly. "Who is that woman? The statue, I mean, she seems like Her, but there’s something off about it."

Gilly laughed "It’s not the Queen, but you're close. You'll learn when it's time to learn." Gilly shot him a mischievous look and pulled him into the Tavern. The establishment was far more crowded this time, and many of the patrons raised mugs and nodded in respect to Gilly. Alex got more than a few curious looks and even sideways sneers pointed his way. "Oh little bird, it looks like you've already got some critics." She laughed and pulled Alex down abruptly kissing him on the cheek, not so subtly whispering. "Its good to get them talking."

Alex felt heat in his face as his cheeks reddened in surprise. He stood up straight rubbing his neck awkwardly. "If you're sure, Gilly." She pointed at the same table they sat at before and he nodded to her shaking his head as if to clear the sudden rush of embarrassment. He weaved his way through the people acutely aware of the eyes that were on him, now more so since the display. A few muttered insults were hurled his way but Alex wasn’t the type to pay them any mind. He pulled out a chair from the table and sat down, looking up to see Gilly still at the bar speaking with the same woman she spoke to the day before. She had a smile on her face and occasionally would glace Alex's way when speaking to the woman. Alex leaned back instead resolving himself to looking around the tavern and taking note of the strange folk within the place.
