Minds A Mess

Lies

Lies

Nov 26, 2019

Once school ended, I walked back home since my house was only three blocks away, then took out my phone to check the time.

“15:54. That must mean that Amery has gotten home already, I wonder if mother has returned yet. I don’t recall her saying her shift is ending earlier than usual, oh well.” I said to myself whilst walking.

Amery is my younger sister. She is fourteen years old and is a freshman in High school. I have been told that it’s easy to tell that we are related. Apparently we both have similar features. But our personalities are far more than different, if you were to compare us you would think that we could never get along.

I’ve also been told that I am solemn, and cold. And that I show little to no emotion around people. I suppose that is true, I am also quiet at times. When I was in middle school, I remember that everyone thought I was mute until I had to speak in a class presentation one month later. I am neat as well, a bit too neat you could say. I don’t think that it’s terribly bad, but I most definitely do show some symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Amery on the other hand, was kind and outgoing, a bit immature at times. She has many friends and is honestly very open-minded. But she can sometimes be far too loud, though she was never afraid of speaking her mind. I have to admit, it sometimes caused trouble.

Once I got home, I went to the living room to check if Amery was there. I thought that if she wasn’t there, then I would look in her room, but I didn’t need to since she was sitting on the couch.

“Oh, you’re back.” She said not looking up from her phone, with no enthusiasm, she didn’t sound too happy.

“And why are you speaking in such a miserable tone? Did something bad happen today?” I don’t think I sounded or looked like it, but I truly am concerned for her.

“Nah, nothing happened. I was just reading a comic on my phone and found out it was the last episode when I finished it, which put me in a bad mood because it ended with the worst cliffhanger ever!” She said groaning.

“Alright then. Judging by all the silence in this house, I am guessing that mother has not returned yet?” I asked, I already knew the answer though.

“Nope, she left a note on the fridge saying that she’d be back at midnight. Nothing else.”

“Okay, I’m going to go to my room now. Is that fine with you?”

“Mhm, byeee!” Amery said answered while giving a small salute, she still didn’t take her eyes from her phone.

When I entered my room, I knew something was wrong. Normally the minute I would walk into the house, Amery would come rushing at me whilst opening her arms for the biggest hugs. It makes me uncomfortable, but I loved her, so I endured it. Even if nothing was wrong, what pointed it out was that she didn’t make eye contact with me. Not even once.

Amery never looks at another’s eye while lying. If she did, she would instantly blurt out the truth. It was physically and mentally impossible for her to lie while looking at another person in the eyes, she once said. I know that the part with the comic is most likely true, but maybe if she hadn’t used that excuse today.

If it was true, she would either be crying or fuming in anger by the time I got home. But I don’t want to bother her into telling me, she already tells me practically everything. If she is hiding something, it obviously means that she didn’t want me to know. So I chose not to ask any further questions.

The last thing I want to see is my own sister getting angry or sad because of me.

I decided to think about something else, so I pulled out the flower from my book, then went to my desk and started researching more about it.

Oh no, what happened to Amery?! To be honest, Amery is one of those people who the minute a person figures out what's wrong, she'd burst into tears and tell them everything.

I based this character off of somebody I know in real life, so far I'm really liking how she turned out!
