Reagan walks through the South Gate to see a plot. This plot is covered in shelves & these shelves are covered with boots, jars, broken tupperware, & other such items. They are filled with soil & a singular seed (except for the long boxes which had many seeds). She walks over to Reagan.
“Hey hun. I brought you some cocoa.”
“Thanks! What do you have?”
“Black Coffee”
“Of course”
“How many marshmallows does it have?”
“Exactly 7, that’s how you like it right?
“Yeah.” Kali takes off the lid & counts the marshmallows “You did remember!”
“Sometimes I feel like you underestimate how romantic I can be. What’cha planting today?”
“Mostly mustard greens, but we’ve planted a little cabbage & we planted tomatoes in the long box. We harvested some of the peppers earlier. Want one?”
“Yeah! Thanks!” Reagan plops the pepper into her mouth. Instantly, her mouth starts to burn. Snot drips from her nose as she drops to the floor & starts crying.
“Oh my god! Are you okay?” Kali leans down & tries to comfort Reagan. “Sorry I should’ve told you they were spicy.” Kali turns away & yells, “Does anyone have any milk or bread or something!” She waits for a few seconds.
“Okay. You stay here. I’m gonna go to the Kroger down the street & get some for you, okay. Don’t move.” Kali dashes down the street.
After what seems like forever, the pain dulls enough for Reagan to think properly. She wipes the drool, tears & snot from her face. “Where Kal?” She walks around a little & begins yelling, “Kal! Kali! Where are you!” This goes on for a few more minutes before Reagan spots Thomas, one of her & Kali’s friends who volunteers at the garden. He’s adjusting the placement of some of the plants.
“Hi, Thomas.”
“Oh, hey Reagan. What’s up?” he says in his monotone voice.
“I’m not doing too ho-uh...great.” Thomas shifts to face Reagan.
“What’s wrong?”
“Well Kali gave me a pepper & didn’t tell me that it was hot. I wasn’t prepared so I plopped the whole thing in my mouth a-”
“The stem too?” Reagan frowns.
“No Thomas, not the stem.”
“Oh good. They taste gross.”
“...sure. Anyway...so I was on the floor shaking for a while & when I came to my senses, Kali was gone.”
“Hmm. Did you try calling her?”
“No, good idea.” She pulls out her phone & calls Kali. It immediately goes to voicemail. “Dang it Kali. Okay, so I don't know where you are & I need to know, so call or text when you get this. Okay.”
“I’m assuming it went to voicemail.”
“Yeah, sadly. I don’t know what to do.”
“Maybe she’s around the garden & her phone’s dead.”
“Are you sure you don’t remember anything between when ate the pepper & when it stopped hurting as much.” Reagan sits down criss cross applesauce (she thinks best that way). She rests her head on her hand & thinks hard for 5 minutes. Then, she leaps to her feet.
“Okay, I still don’t remember anything, but I thought about what Kali would do. I know she would comfort me & try to find a solution. And what do you eat & drink when you have something too spicy. Milk & Bread! My theory is that Kali went to the store to get me milk &/or bread. The only thing is, I don’t know which store. Got any ideas?”
“Well, I assume she’d want to get back to you as quickly as possible. So she’d probably go to the Kroger up the street.”
“Thomas you’re a genius!” She inputs Kroger into google maps walk and dashes toward the west gate. “Thanks Thomas! See you later!”
“Bye Reagan.” He goes back the adjusting the plants.
