I knocked on the door as I always did before entering the house although there was no way the homeowner was going to hear me. He was always fast asleep when I arrived in the evening. A certain scent occupied just past the door as I entered. I couldn’t pinpoint what the specific smell was, but I knew within all certainty that it wasn’t good. My heart raced as bounded up the stairs and threw open the vampire’s bedroom door.
“What’s wrong?!?” I asked in a panic bearing my fangs in case of any would-be intruder, “Did someone break in?!?”
“What’re you talking about?” Onyx appeared from the bedroom a small puppy loose in his arms, “No one’s here…”
“Clearly not…” I huffed giving the thing in his arms a short look before hurrying down the stairs, why does he have a puppy…?
“Is something upsetting you?” Onyx asked promptly staring gleefully at the puppy as he stroked its little head, “Someone didn’t assault you on the way here… Did they?!?” He asked more urgently this time but kept his attention on the dog.
“Why do you have that thing?” I questioned barely managing to look at it, “You didn’t decide to keep it, did you? I don’t know the first thing about taking care of a puppy…”
Onyx looked at my suddenly seeming almost in shock, “Do you not like dogs, Starburst?” The puppy gave a little yelp as it pawed at the vampire’s leg, “I’m just watching it for a neighbor.”
“I see…” I poured him a cup of coffee as I nervously kept my distance from the mutt as it approached me making excited eyes, “I never thought you’d be a dog person…”
“You don’t have to worry.” Onyx took my hand lightly pressing his lips to the back of it, “I really like you… Like even more than the puppy!”
