"They seem to admire you greatly Gilly. You never told me about why, much less of your position here. The Captain kept referring to the people as commoners; does that make you a noble?" Alex asked as they walked, he could see the corner of her mouth upturn in a smile. She stopped in the middle of the street turning to look at him. She scrutinized him as if debating on if she should tell him anything or not. Alex picked up on the look and she knew it.
"They do little bird, you'll learn soon enough. I promise, I'm not keeping you in the dark. Some things are better left learning with your experience. Give it time and you'll find out everything you wish to know, for now however, enjoy our walk. We're headed to the market district proper now as there is the matter of our little messenger earlier that I need to deal with. You'll like seeing the markets in their active times." She reached up and put her hand on Alex's cheek running her fingertips along his jaw line. "You might even consider making this place your home too in the future. I want you to learn about my home and the people within, it's important you understand their lot." She withdrew her hand and they started walking again.
Alex thought about her statement as they continued on, his eyes turned more to the surroundings around them, the cobbled streets busy with people roaming from door to door about their business. He looked ahead to their destination further down the street. Many people making their way along the well kept streets with a few stopping and conversing near trees planted street side. The sounds of talking and laughter permeated the air and Alex couldn't help but appreciate it. It was pleasant to see so many carefree and idle people milling about. It was a far cry from what he was used to from his home. They neared the gates leading into the market proper footmen posted at either side of it watching the passersby with mild interest. One of the guards noticed Gilly as they neared the portal to the markets and whistled a sharp quick whistle to his partner across the street, which promptly looked up at what the other was seeing.
Both immediately stood a little more upright at their passing the first guard to notice the two calling out in greeting. "Good morning Lady Adams!" She waved at him as if in combined greeting and recognition of his position. "Lady Adams I was asked to have you report to the Knight Cap..."
"We've already spoken with him Turin, Gilly is fine. Is he in the markets proper or did he return to his office?" She cut him off, the guard looked at her and deflated somewhat becoming much more at ease.
"Pardon, Gilly, I saw you walking with your human here and thought you might be on some sort of dignitary assignment. We don’t ever see you walking with servants after all." Turin smiled earnestly at her. Alex eyed the man; He was dressed in fine plate mail with a red and black crest painted on its chest. The man held a halberd and was casually leaning against it as it supported him. He seemed very at ease about the situation as a whole and he leaned in eyeing Alex with a keen interest brown eye looking him up and down until his gaze met with the gold etched hilt of the blade at his hip. His eyes widened as he suddenly realized what he said. "I... uh... I apologize profusely Ser..." His tone suddenly became significantly less informal.
Alex looked confused and turned to Gilly who laughed gently at the poor man. "I'm glad you noticed, he's in no way my servant Turin." She smiled playfully at the now flustered guard who was visibly shaken. "Tell me of the captain, what did he look like when he came back to the markets?"
Turin, thankful for the sudden distraction, looked to Gilly, nervously brushing his black hair behind his pointed ear. "He seemed downright angry Lady, come to think of it he didn't have his sword on him either, I imagine it’s because he lost it maybe?" The guard looked thoughtful. "I'd be upset too, that was a gift from his father the Duke of Dravin, was a fine blade. I wonder where it got off to." He paused for a moment looking at Alex. "It's a birthright thing Ser, The noble houses all grant their children fine weapons blessed by the priests they represent." Alex cocked his head slightly not offering any sort of response. "I imagined you were curious about why he'd be upset about it. It’s rare that we have humans here, and even rarer that we have ones that have a pedigree."
"A pedigree, Turin?" Alex finally spoke to the man his confusion evident in his tone. "I'm afraid I don’t know what you're speaking about."
"Your sword Ser, I’d figure you to be a royal with such a fine weapon." He offered as a clarifier. Alex only nodded in reply and smiled lightly unsure of what to think of that.
"Come on now Alex, we’ve places to go, a battered captain to see, eventually." Gilly smirked and tugged Alex's arm as they started back down the streets and into the markets, leaving the guard to his confused look at her comment.
