We continued to watch shows, while we waited for it to be time to leave for my defense classes. It was weird thinking that I could potentially learn why I keep losing my memory. How would mine and Max’s lives change after everything was solved. I had no doubt in my mind that he would treat me the same, but I also felt that he would spend less time with me.
At that time, I was the focus of his job, but once my case was solved, he’d be moved to a new case. Would I even be happy to regain my past? Since I can’t remember it, I’ve made up so many scenarios in my head of what kind of person I used to be. Some of them are good and some of them are not so good. What if I remembered my past and wasn’t happy with it.?
I could have been a very helpful member of society by helping everybody I met in the streets. Maybe I was a bookworm who was super nerdy and knew everything there was to know about my career. Maybe I was a bad guy who bullied everybody. I could have been a loner who spoke to nobody. Was I rich or maybe even poor? There were so many options as to what my life was like before. I could've been just like I was at that moment but with all my memories.
Eventually, Max turned off the t.v. and told me to get ready for my class. I got off of the couch and found some socks to put on. I put on my shoes as Max waited for me at the door. I walked out of the door, and Max locked up the house as I walked to his car. Trapped inside of the metal box, we made our way to the gym where I took my lessons.
Past our morning conversation, the day was bland. Nothing special really happened, and we went about our day like we normally would. Over the week, we made small preparations for our trip to the Crown District.
Max bought our plane tickets as well as Detective Karl’s since he agreed to come with us. He was only mildly shocked to discover that I was a spirit myself. Max also bought items like shampoo and new toothbrushes to take on the trip with us. He also got a few snack foods for us to eat in our down time.
With each passing day, I got more excited about going to the spirit realm. I wanted to see it for myself and experience it. Although in my past, I had obviously experienced it, without my memories, I had no clue what to expect. It was like going on a trip to Madrid if you lived in the U.S.
Sunday morning, Max woke me up as usual except it was super early in the morning. We had to get up at four in the morning so that we would have time to pick up Detective Karl. We picked him up at his house and headed to the airport. We had to go through several security checks before we could actually get onto the plane.
While waiting in line to board the plane Detective Karl and Max talked. “This would be a lot easier if you could just port us there yourself.” Detective Karl complained.
“Yeah, but I’m not of the right spirit for that, and since I would like to involve as few spirits as possible right now, I decided this was the best option..” Max commented.
“It’s a shame that you’re not the prince because then you could just do anything.”
Max laughed, “Who knows, maybe Felix is secretly the prince. The prince has been missing for a while now, and the time line matches up to the time Felix was found in that field.”
“Really? The prince is missing? That is very unusual.”
“It’s unclear what happened but everyone is assuming he is still alive since a body has not been found yet. But no one can pick up on his aura, which means he has probably masked himself from the people. I’m sure he has good reasons for doing whatever it is he’s up to this time.”
“You used to be good friends with him. Have you tried talking to him?”
“No, but if he doesn’t want to be found right now, then I will respect that.”
I listened to them continue their conversation about various topics that pertained to the spirit realm. Apparently it had been more than ten years since Detective Karl had left the spirit realm. He was trying to catch up with the current politics and issues of the spirit realms before going back into it.
It took forever to get through all of the checks and finally get ready to board the plane. As we got onto the plane, my excitement sky rocketed. I could not wait to meet new spirits and to step foot in a world I could not remember.
The three of us sat in the same row with Max in the middle, Detective Karl in the aisle seat, and me in the window seat. I looked out of the window as we waited for the plane to be completely boarded. We waited for a while before a flight attendant gave us a demonstration of what to do in case of emergencies, and then, we were off and on our way to California.
For the first half hour of the flight, I stared out the window in amazement as Max and Detective Karl talked. At first, it was interesting to look out the window at the blue sky and empty atmosphere, but after a while, it became boring. I closed the window blind and looked at the back of the seat in front of me as my excitement started to die down.
In its place, anxiety and fear flooded into my thoughts. What was the Crown District going to be like? I was scared that I would be disappointed in what I saw. I was also worried that the aristocrats wouldn’t be able to help me either. I’d have nowhere else to turn to if the aristocrats couldn't figure out what was wrong with me.
The flight was highly boring and took over ten hours to complete. At one point, we had to switch planes because Max couldn’t find a straight flight to Eureka, California. By the time we made our final landing, all three of us were tired and sick of the air. Max found an unoccupied area and moved us into the spirit realm.
Once he did that, we took a break in a small café in the spirit realm so that we could relax and collect ourselves. It was also the place that Max’s friends would come to join us. While we waited for the others to join us, we ended up talking about our favorite foods.
“The coffee cakes here are really good, but they’re nothing like my mother used to make when she was still around.” Detective Karl stated as he took a bite out of the sweet pastry.
“Nothing is ever as good as homemade items anyhow.” Max commented.
“I don’t remember anything about my mom’s cooking, but Max’s food is the best I have ever had as far as I’m concerned.” I joined the conversation.
Max gave me a little snort, “You can’t convince me to cook on this trip by buttering me up.”
“But it’s true. Your food is the best food I’ve ever had.” I confessed.
“My cooking is the only cooking you’ve had that you can remember. Your compliment doesn’t have much base.” Max countered my statement.
“He’s still right about you making good food.” Detective Karl confirmed.
“Max, can I ask something?” I shifted the conversation.
“You just did.” He smirked at me.
“Asshole.” I rolled my eyes at him and asked him what I really wanted to know. “Why are we in the spirit realm right now if it’s dangerous for me to be in it?”
“This particular spot is okay for you to be in. There are a lot of protector angels and demons living in this area so if anything were to happen, we’d have a quick response for help. I could also throw you and the rest of us into the human realm so that the attackers couldn’t get us. The only way they could get us, is if one of them was also a guardian spirit.”
Detective Karl joined us in our conversation, “Even if there weren’t any protection angels and demons, most of the spirits in here would most likely join us in fending them off. So you should just relax a little bit and enjoy the coffee and treats.”
Taking Detective Karl’s advice, I relaxed, and we continued to talk about food and waited for the rest of the group. As I looked around, I noticed for the first time, that none of the people in the room looked completely human. They all had at least one feature that made them stand out.
It was fascinating, and I had to try hard to keep from staring at people. Luckly, we weren’t in the café long before Max’s friends made an appearance. I had no clue who they were when they walked up to our table.
“Hey, Max. How’s it been?” A girl with long, blonde hair greeted him.
“Been a long day. And it’s been even longer since the last time I’ve seen you or your partners. Let me introduce you to my companions here.” He pointed at me as he talked to the girl. “This is Felix and the other guy is Karl. This is Lillian and the guy with her is Corey and the other girl is Miriam. They are in a polygamous relationship.”
Karl stood up and started shaking their hands, “It’s nice to meet you guys. I look forward to traveling with you.”
I became a little bashful about meeting so many new people at one time and chose to remain silent. The three of them joined us at the booth, so I had to move closer to Max, which was not a problem at all. As I moved in closer to Max, he placed an arm around me and pulled me even closer to him. It was unexpected but oddly comforting. Taking up the chance, I cuddled in closer to Max and even put my head on his shoulder.
“Awe, you two are so cute!” Lillian blurted as she stared at us with an excited look in her eyes.
“Stop that now.” Max commanded her.
“Stop what?” She innocently asked as she twirled a strand of hair around her finger.
“You know what I mean. Don’t play coy.” He growled at her.
“You sound so scary; it gives me chills.”
“Well then, maybe you should keep your thoughts to yourself.”
“But all she did was call us cute. What’s wrong with that?” I inquired not understanding why Max was being so aggressive with her.
“There’s nothing wrong with her calling us cute. What’s wrong is what she’s imagining in that head of hers.” He answered me.
She smirked at us, “so, have you done it?”
“Done what?” I asked in response as Max responded, “That’s none of your business.”
“What’s Max like in bed?” She questioned me.
I looked at her confused. That was a really weird question. I didn’t really know how to answer her, but before I could give her any kind of response, Max ordered, “stop it now. He doesn't even know what you mean.”
“You don’t sound like you’re friends with her.” I stated as he finished growling at her.
“We’re good friends when she’s not being a weird perv.” Max responded.
Lillian piped in as well, “He’s really just no fun when it comes to talking about sex.”
“Not everyone fantasizes about sex between two guys almost twenty-four seven.” Corey commented as he patted her on the shoulder.
As they continued to talk, my face grew red as I realized what the whole conversation was about. I felt slightly embarrassed since I couldn’t tell what she was asking. Then, I remembered something I wanted to know, but was turned away because he wouldn’t tell me. “So you’re not a virgin?” I quizzed him.
“This is not the place or time to discuss that.” He sighed as he took a sip from his cup.
