Porter didn’t make a sound. Jess followed suit, although she looked about ready to throw up.
Porter watched Jessica closely, while trying to listen to what was going on outside the room.
“It can’t be anything bad, can it?” she whispered. Porter was growing increasingly worried, both for Jessica and their safety.
Two minutes later, Nia came back with Kyte and Kylie. Porter breathed out for the first time in a while and Jessica nearly fainted.
“Hey, hey, hey! Don’t fall asleep!” Nia grabbed a bucket of water and emptied it on Jessica’s head.
“Woah! I’m awake.” She sat up straight and started shivering.
“What happened?” Kyte asked as he looked over Porter, not seeing anything different to went he last saw him. He took one look at Jessica and answered his own question. “He attacked you again? How? It wasn’t a full moon. Wild werewolves can only turn on a full moon.” He rushed to Porter’s side.
The sad eyes appeared again as Kyte looked at his face, checking to see if he was alright.
“I’m fine.” Porter assured him. He couldn’t feel any pain at that moment, mostly because his leg was numb.
“That’s a new bandage.” Kyte pointed out, knowing perfectly well that something had happened to him.
“The old one came loose when we were escaping.” Porter told him; he wasn’t sure why he lied.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Nia roll her eyes as she listened to the conversation, as if to say, “You guys do this every time one of you gets hurt.”
“Who are these people?” Jessica asked, too out of it to use manners. “Are they bad people? Should we fight them?” She said as if she were drunk.
“No, this is Kyte and Kylie.” Nia pointed to each of them respectively. “I’ve known them for a long time.” She walked over to Jessica to check her temperature and give her a blanket.
“Is she transitioning?” Kylie asked Nia, sitting down on the end of Porter’s bed as she did.
“Yes. Everything is going well so far. Her temperature is far above its optimal range, but that is normal. I just have to keep an eye on her for the next couple of days.”
Kyte noticed the look on Porter’s face and tried to brighten his own. Porter felt horrible, it was his fault that Jessica was in this situation. “Come with me.” Kyte requested as he walked closer to the bed.
“But I can’t walk…” Porter began, only to be interrupted by Kyte shoving his arms under his back and knees and lifting him into the air.
“I’ll carry you.” He said as he walked out of the room.
Porter wrapped his arms around Kyte’s neck as he began to feel unbalanced.
“You carry people like this often?” Porter joked. Kyte’s cheeks lit up like a tomato.
“Only you. Unless someone else is passed out and needs to be moved.” Kyte replied, causing Porter to blush as well.
Kyte carried Porter to a room he hadn’t seen when coming into the cave. The walls were made of obsidian, like most of the cave, but somehow there were trees and grass growing in there. In the centre, there was a small pond, full of crystal-clear water with small fishes swimming around happily.
“How is this even here?” Porter asked as Kyte placed him on the floor in front of the pond.
“You created it. There’s also a whole other room with a pool of saltwater in it.” Kyte smiled faintly. “This room was by far your favourite, and mine.”
“I’m sure it was. It’s amazing.” Porter couldn’t express how he felt about this room. It felt as though he had a really special connection with it.
Kyte starred at Porter for a while as he played with the water. The fish were drawn to his hand as if they wanted pats, which Porter graciously gave to them.
“That shirt is way to big for you.” Kyte pulled at Porter's sleeve.
“Nia said it was yours.” Porter blushed even though there was no reason to. “My other one was… dirty.” He said rather then saying covered in blood.
Kyte joined Porter, waving his hands through the cool water. After several minutes, Porter felt relaxed. He was able to breathe easier then before and his mind was calm, like a smooth, slowly running river.
It was refreshing until a new memory appeared in the forefront of his mind…
Porter and Kyte walked hand in hand down the hallway and into this room. Porter simultaneously saw every moment they ever spent in there. Every word spoken, every touch, even the feeling of the feeling of the trees surrounding them.
Kyte snapped his mind back to reality. He shook Porter’s shoulder until he finally looked at him.
“Woah.” Porter blinked. “That was a lot.” He held a hand against his forehead.
“What happened?” Kyte looked enthusiastic, as if he knew this would happen.
“I remembered something.” He looked into Kyte’s eyes.
Porter involuntarily looked towards Kyte’s lips. He had felt this urge ever since meeting him, but never acted upon it. He found himself leaning closer and closer towards Kyte, their faces nearly touching.
Porter’s eyes fluttered shut as he made contact. Kyte melted under his touch, welcoming the feeling he had been craving ever since the accident.
Porter didn’t know the whole story of their relationship yet, but he was sure he had just discovered some of the best parts.
