After awhile Susans sobs subsided to a quiet sniffle every so often. I slowly released my hold on her to check the hall through the small window in the door, the hall appeared to be empty from what was visible through the 4x24 inch sheet of foggy glass. I try to open the door to get a better view of the hallway but it slams shut milliseconds after its opened, I look back through the foggy glass window to see what was going on just in time to see Liam pop into view with his shaggy brown hair brushing the top edge of his crystal blue grey eyes, the corners of his plump rose tinted lips curling into a smile of relief at the sight of me and Susan. “Emily stay with Susan in there, I’ll come back and get you when it’s safe, OK?” he says through the door.
I nod to him, lock the door again and return to Susan who was staring off into the abyss from what I could tell, then again who could blame her she just saw her mothers intestines hanging out of her body, I would be doing the same thing if it were my mother on that bench.
An hour later Liam comes back with Chad and James in tow. “Girls?” Liam taps on the door quietly as if not to startle us. I open the door for the boys and quickly usher them in towards the shelf filled with cleaning rags next the the sink and away from Susan. “You boys clean yourselves up I’m going to try to get Susan on her feet so we can get out of here.”
“What happened to her?” James asked, worry filling his amber eyes.
“We found her mother.” I whisper to the boys. They immediately knew what that meant and they all looked about ready to cry.
We all agreed to give Susan a little more time to mourn while we sat there trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Nothing was making sense. The only conclusion we could come up with was a zombie apocalypse but that only happens in movies right? How could that be happening to us, and why now? All we knew for sure was that if this was a zombie apocalypse we needed to get out of Brookings,Oregon not just now but right now.
