I feel the need to apologize for not continuing this diary for quite some time. Being the Grandwitch of the earthly covens tends to take up more time than I expected, but I’m getting ahead of myself. I suppose I should begin where I left off from my last entry and explain what happened next. The woman who saved me from being burned at the stake took me deep into the forest the next day. I was confused since she promised to help teach me how to control my abilities, and the deeper we went into the forest, the more clouded my visions became. Every time I would ask where we were going or what we were doing, she would simply answer “Patience.” We had to have been walking deep into the forest for more than half an hour, which to a small child is more like an eternity no matter which day and age. A few minutes later I begin to notice some changes that began occurring around me… familiar changes. The sky had become white, littered with black stars. I begin to panic, until the woman took hold of me and reassured me that we’d be safe.
I held her hand while we went deeper into the forest. The changes that occurred around us began to take place the same way it did on the hill that transformed me. The grass and vegetation on the ground grew black, as the trees began to change into the familiar red and blue. The more the changes proceeded, the more nervous I became, until I could not go further without squeezing my eyes shut and grasping her hand tight. We finally stopped, and she asked that I open my eyes. I opened them and was exposed to a sight that filled me with both terror and amazement. The red and blue trees were gone, and were replaced with ones with bark as white as snow, and black leaves that were as dark as the night sky. Many animals were also present, affected by the changes that were occurring. I saw birds on fire, but in no pain, deer with flowers growing from their antlers, and giant fish flying in the air above the trees. I finally asked “Where were we?”
Ahead of us was a tree that emanated with great power. I didn’t understand at first what it was, but I was able to feel it. She began to walk towards the tree and sat upon its base, gesturing to me to follow her with the smile that assured me I had nothing to fear. I followed as I stared at my surroundings with amazement. Back in my village I was aware of the existence of fish, but I never seen such a variety of them. Different shapes and colors that I never would have dreamt of. It was as if I found myself in some kind of dream, only for me to realize that wherever we were, we were at the center of it. I finally reached the base of the tree and the woman sat me on her lap. “Would you like to know why we are here?” she said. I nodded, with a relief that what she will share with me would finally answer the many questions that I had since my transformation.
“We are in a place called the Void. Here we can see many worlds other than the one we find ourselves in now. The black stars you see are all worlds that exist far from ours, but every now and then they collide.”
The notion that there were other worlds was a very new concept to me, but it left me with a feeling of emptiness, for I had now realized how small I am compared to what is out there. She pointed up ahead of us and to the sky where there was a black spot that nearly covered half of the white sky, as if a giant sun was beginning to set.
I was frightened at first, but she continued to explain, "That is also a World. When worlds collide, no one notices except for those like us. Only we can see this place, and when they collide our worlds leave behind places like this, where magic can be felt and seen by us. You have a gift. That gift allows you to manipulate this magic, making you more powerful than you realize. Your change was done because you touched magic for the first time, and now you have the opportunity to explore the many worlds around you. Do you still wish to follow this path?”
Having learned that this change was within me my entire life made me curious. Not only did I have the opportunity to learn how to control my abilities, but I also had the chance to explore not only my world, but possibly many others. I looked at the black sun, thinking back to my days in the village where I would always take any chance to explore something new, to learn, and now I have the chance to dedicate my entire life to learning. I looked back at her and nodded “yes.”
“Good, I’ll teach you all I can, but we better get moving.” She got up, and the trees began to grow red and blue again, and the sky was turning into an evening pink. She continued, “Places like these do not last long, but there are others all around the world, with other confused people just like you.” Hearing of others like me rid me of the feeling of loneliness that has been growing in me. I took her hand and we began to make our way out of the forest as everything began to change back to normal.
I then asked “What should I call you?”
She continued to smile, “Just call me Ann.”
